SOLVED: After about a thousand failed google searches I finally rememberred a tiny detail that google recognized. The book is called Pillage by Obert Sky
I read this book maybe 5 or so years ago, it was newer but not well known at all. It was a young adult fiction I think and I don't know if there were any sequals. It was about a boy who had to move to his grandfather's (I think) mansion after his mother died. He had never met his grandfather and while he was at the mansion only met the staff. His grandfather stayed in the dome of the mansion and the boy was forbidden to go to that level, while everything else was his to explore. The staff were kind to him and gave him space to grieve. He went to school and became friends with another boy (possibly a girl too) and they explored the grounds of the mansion and found a garden full of stones I think. I think he eventually found a key or maybe a book. A dragon was released or hatched from the stones and there was a lot of destruction, and I think everyone was an imposter or under control? I kind of lose it there, I can't remember anything else. I remember liking the book and wanting to read more, but being disapointed. So it was either a stand alone or newer and the rest weren't out yet?
