End of the book

in the end, after the doctor's wife is killed someone mentions the fact that they hear a dog and it is said that that person is blind. Is it just a coincidence or did the entire population got blind again after the hit on her was executed?
Also is there a next book?

There will not be another book - the author died some years ago.

Yes, I know that there won’t be more Saramago’s books. As a Portuguese national, Saramago’s death was a great loss for us and extremely publicised.
However, I have seen other books written by him with similar subjects, that have been associated with these two. Particularly, “Death with interruptions”.
I just wanted to make sure that this was the only ending I was going to get as, at the time of this post, it broke my heart.
