One of my favourite authors, Aussie Richard Flanagan won the 2014 Man Booker Prize for The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and no wonder. Brutal, tender, unforgettable.

Carol Jones | 100 comments Have just read the 2nd and 3rd books in my favourite genre category: history.
Elizabeth Macarthur: A Life at the Edge of the World by Michelle Scott Tucker 5*
A very readable biography of one of Australia's pioneer European settlers.
Finding Eliza: Power and Colonial Storytelling by Larissa Behrendt 5*
A critical examination of the tropes and misrepresentations of indigenous people in the Eliza Fraser shipwreck story of 1836, and other colonial storytelling.

Enjoyed both immensely. Each was fascinating in its own way. You can find my longer reviews on the relevant pages. Not very good at doing the URL thing!

Ace (aceonroam) Finished my second Favourite Genre book The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough which was very long and unlike everyone else in the world who gave this 5 stars, I only gave it 4. I expect rotten tomatoes will be thrown at me, but the priest was a bit too fond of little Meggie if you ask me.

message 577: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments Seek and ye shall find! I was having such a hard time finding new releases, but I have five on my list now; it is my favorites that are lagging at the moment,

Some of my recent acquisitions;
Read: Terra Major Under Threat (Sentinels of Tzurac #1) by James Raven by James Raven Slightly cheesy, but very enjoyable space opera I picked up from an author signing outside Dymocks one day.

Currently reading: If Kisses Cured Cancer by T.S. Hawken by T.S. Hawken, free copy gifted me by the author - I am charmed by it so far!

To read: The Yellow House by Emily O'Grady by Emily O'Grady

Once I have done with this little clutch, I will need to go out and search for a few more marine themes. Really loving this challenge so far!

The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth

Quite enjoyed it, even though it was billed as 'women's fiction' which I think might have the effect of limiting its appeal - even though the story was related by the female characters, I thought there was plenty in there for the male reader and I enjoyed it overall - 4 star (8.5/10).

It's interesting that you tended to rate your male authors lower than female and that the writers in your other genres were mostly female too (even crime). Why do you think that is? I'm just curious.

I find I read many more female authors than male too Carol. And no particular reason - it just happens that way :)

message 592: by Carol (new)

Carol Jones | 100 comments Brenda wrote: "I find I read many more female authors than male too Carol. And no particular reason - it just happens that way :)"

Yes, I probably read more female authors too because I like their focus on relationships rather than the supposedly 'bigger' themes some male authors focus on. Still, the male authors I do read I generally really enjoy and would rate just as highly as the female authors' works. It's interesting.
