Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that about you! Me, though. I gotta watch out for me, I can be quite sneaky.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 2207 comments You know, I'd almost rather cherry pick for the bonus...than to admit that I often find additional copies.

Then there's me KNOWING that I have one copy but its not digital and I'm not home so...another copy gets purchased on the fly.

I'm terrible.

But I finished another book! FINALLY!

I have many, SO many cases of multiples (I MAY HAVE A PROBLEM), but I don't count them separately because the way that I organize my To-Reads is by exclusive shelf, so it can only be on one. For instance, I have The Things They Carried as a paperback, ebook, and audiobook, but it's only listed on my To-Read_Owned shelf because I consider the print version to be "primary".

message 655: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6115 comments If I bought something prior to 2018 in Kindle format, I counted it as a new book and part of my TBR pile even though I had read it years ago in paper. However, I don't count it as read until I read the digital version and it does count as part of my TBR pile.

message 656: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 505 comments I just went through two of my shelves and was able to weed out about ten books to donate. Along with the ten I've finished reading this year I'm like two books under for the bonus. Now I just have to garner up the will power not to buy anything new until I've read a bit more from my shelves. (It doesn't help I drive my grandmother on her errands and she likes to stop at the bookstore at least once a month)

Sorry, I didn't see this comment. There's no need to count it as a "buy" if you already own the book in another format. Sometimes that's the only way to get to them :)

message 666: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3168 comments I’m way behind everyone else in the points department. But- since swallowing my fear of the library police I haven’t bought a single book since February! So I’m currently at only 2 more books bought than read this year. Clearly I won’t win in the points column (only at 1,000 something) but if I can curb my book buying habits that’s a win.

Just finished the Ruins: 500+ pages, owned for 5+ years, turned into a movie, given as a gift, read with a cup of coffee and a dog in my lap for 190 points!

message 667: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 505 comments I'm sitting at 985 points right now. I may try and be more strategic with my reading choices like finding the oldest books to read first.

message 668: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 39 comments I might have to redo mine. I thought that one group of items you could only count once per year and I guess there is no limit. Shoot. Need a spreadsheet to add!

Sarah, I won't make the competition, but progress is progress! I have more time to read/listen than you. So clearly, that automatically helps. But, curbing the excessive book buying habit is GOOD.

message 669: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3168 comments @Stephanie Yes- progress is good! There is a link to a spreadsheet someone shared near the top of the thread if you’d like to grab that one.

I’m lucky to have a good library system. So far there has been very little I want to read that isn’t available in at least one format from somewhere. And if I’m not liking something, I don’t feel obligated to finish just because I paid money for it. (Only downside is e-books and audio often have long wait times.)

I do still find it fun to scan the shelves of used book shops looking for hidden gems. But I’m hoping I can pretty well put that to rest and just buy favorite authors as part of what I actually want to collect.

message 672: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Hehe... it added 6 to mine, CBRetriever. Thankfully, I'm still purging physical books, so I'm offsetting them, so I don't feel super guilty. (I mean, I guess aside from the fact that I'm donating purchased books unread. I guess that's a waste of money. But... Meh, if I'm really unlikely to EVER read them at this point, why keep them?)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 2207 comments lucky for me, most of those books are not my cuppa. I did grab the Grey House because it was magical realism + translated = reading challenge approved!

I kept books for years because it felt stupid to get rid of them unread. When I finally donated the first batch, I felt so good! I've donated exactly a hundred books this year, many of them unread, and I'm very happy about that. Someone else is going to read them, and they're not sitting on my shelves anymore. Win-win. And I can't get the money back whatever I do, so why worry about it.

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments On the one hand I ma reading an Agatha Christie every month and I inherited my AC collection from my grandmother in 1992 so that is 150 points.
On the other hand I am concentrating on the 2 dozen books I have bought in the last couple of years so that is maximum 10 points.

But, of those 49 I have read 7 and am currently reading one, and plan to get to a few more this year. Still, not really on track. AT ALL. :/

I've read:

Alanna: The First Adventure - 1 star (sorry Tortall fans! I've just decided this series is not for me. I still plan to read Immortals though.)
Mary Poppins - 5 stars
A Game of Thrones- 5 stars
Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said - 2 stars
The Once and Future King - 4 stars
The Handmaid's Tale - 5 stars
The Dispossessed - 5 stars
The Princess Bride - 5 stars
Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch - 3 stars
The Man in the High Castle - 2 stars
The Fifth Season - 5 stars

Gasp! Stutter! Jaw drop!

lol.

Sorry you didn't like Alanna. IIRC, you weren't thrilled with Alanna's choices. I may warn that Daine's aren't...better informed. Worth a shot, I guess though!

That wasn’t what made me dislike Song of the Lioness though. In fact, Alanna’s character is really the only thing I do like about them. I just wish she was in a better written, more mature book, I guess. There just wasn’t anything in the series for me. It was too simple, shallow, and juvenile (in my opinion!) I probably would’ve enjoyed it more if I had read it as a kid.

Mmph. I don't wanna read the ones I have a paper copy of... *deflects responsibility*

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 2207 comments From 23-Jan-2018:
1119 books in Book Collectorz with 630 unread
403 TBR books on GR
1 book purchased in 2018 (which is not true cause I just ordered 2 special orders yesterday but I don't have them yet)

I'm aiming to read 75 books (at the min) that I already own in 2018.

15-Jun-2018:
1140 books in BC with IDK how many books unread. Do not remember how I got that total. = +21 books
230 books on my GR WTR shelf = -173 (WTF?)
NOT SAYING how many books I've purchased in 2018
65 books currently read from unread list.

Jess Penhallow | 39 comments I am sure I read most of these with a tea/coffee at some point but thought I would be conservative and only award points where I have a distinct memory of reading it with a tea/coffee.

Patricia | 38 comments So far I’ve read 33 out of the 340 books on my tbr list for 3095 points. But I’ve purchased 22 books in 2018. And now I’m at a complete standstill and going off track and just reading any ole thing. Gosh, I was so focused, too.

I have been concentrating on the boxes of mysteries my Mom collected. Most of them are well over 10 years old so I have been racking up points there. I was surprised how many of them turned out to be award winners as well. I have managed to restrict myself to only 18 new purchases this year so I am +5 for the bonus.
