The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig is one of my favorites! The whole series is about 12 books long. I got so into the "will they/won't they" of the two modern day characters.
Susanna Kearsley writes about two time periods a lot in her books, although she does it as a sort of time travel or clairvoyant element. It sounds far fetched but really works. I enjoyed The Winter Sea, The Firebird, and The Rose Garden.Other great books in two time periods include:
A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux
Stolen Beauty by Laurie Lico Albanese
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
