message 52: by Di (new)

Di | 10 comments I can't read a book a week, so I have to combine topics, I will be reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas for the week one and two topic. It fulfills a book with A, T, & Y as well as a book from the first 10 on my want to read shelf. Coincidentally, it also fulfills a topic from the 2018 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge for the Book Made Into a Movie I've Already Seen.

This will be January's book. I'll update what I choose for February. Happy Reading! :)

message 57: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleym99) I am reading Robin Hood for week 2. Seems like I added a lot of older books and classics when I added books that I wish to read. I am more than half way done with it and am enjoying it so far.

Eileen | 39 comments I'm reading Outlander for this week's challenge. I started it the week after Christmas, stopped reading it on January 1, but now picking it up again for Week 2. I'm 45% of the way through it so even though it's a long one, I'm confident I'll finish it by Sunday.

message 67: by Tamula (new)

Tamula | 65 comments I'm reading Honeymoon in Purdah: An Iranian Journey which has been on my shelf and TBR for a very long time. It is a little dated but I love travel tales and Alison Wearing does a nice job of showing how she connected with and learned from the people she met in Iran.

message 68: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments I’m reading Feed by Mira Grant for week 2. I added it to my TBR on Dec 31, 2016, as I planned my 2017 challenges. I hadn’t really made use of the feature before then. I still have a couple other books going from last week, but think I’ll start tonight anyway.

my grandparents emigrated from Iran to America in the 60s. I love hearing about Western travelers discovering what a beautiful country it is with lovely people. I've never been myself but I very much hope to some day

That's beautiful. I'd love to visit Iran if the U.S. and Iranian governments can someday learn to get along. This book does describe some difficult conditions and she spends a lot of time sweating in the hijab she had to wear but you can tell that she respects the people she met and the kindness they offered her.

Flashman sounds really interesting! One of my GR friends, who shares similar reading interests as me, gave it 5 stars so I added it!

message 73: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (watermelanie) | 112 comments I'm reading Blindness by Jose Saramago, which I added to my TBR all the way back in July of 2013. This is my first time reading Saramago, and I'll admit I'm having some difficulty with it. He enjoys run-ons and quixotic punctuation, and it's a book that requires a lot of concentration to read.

someday i hope! for now I'll satisfy myself with fiction/nonfiction from the region. If You Could Be Mine is on my list this year

message 75: by Daniela (new)

Daniela Rosas | 4 comments I'm reading for this challenge Twilight Director's Notebook : The Story of How We Made the Movie Based on the Novel by Stephenie Meyer
I add the book to my to-read self in March of 2016

message 77: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2285 comments "oldest book on your TBR" was one of my favorite prompts last year for Popsugar, so I am looking forward to this one. I actually wish it was more restrictive and forced me to read THE oldest book on my list, added in 2008: Girl with a Pearl Earring, which actually is sitting gathering dust somewhere in my room. (I rarely buy books, I'm big library user!) The second oldest is a compilation of two books I've read already, Latro in the Mist, but wanted to re-read so I can read the THIRD book in the series that the author published much later. But my library doesn't have that compilation. So I need to decide if I'm going to read just the first book, or read both books and count it as one. I'm an impatient reader so I don't think I could do that, I want to check off a box as soon as I finish a book!

Diana, this is a great idea for those of us who are slower readers. I've already planned out my first few books, but I may try to do this in the future!

I'll be reading Animal Farm by George Orwell for this week. Like many of us in this thread, when I joined Goodreads (in 2013) I started by adding all these classic books to my list. So I had Dune, The Catcher in the Rye, etc. to choose from...or The Great Hunt, but I didn't want to get stuck on such a long book on week 2! I went with Animal Farm because I'm trying to read books that I already have a copy of to reduce my physical TBR bookshelf. Plus it's nice and short!

message 79: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleym99) I read Robin Hood and it was a quick, easy to read and entertaining.

message 80: by Heather (new)

Heather (redbayheather) “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” by Rachel Joyce

I just started my TBR list so I picked the first book that I could download from my library.

message 81: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

January 11, 2011 - I had just joined Goodreads and I went and added every book on my bookshelves in my Korean studio - there were several hundred of them. Originally I only put on books that I actually owned as TBR. Those books are now in Canada in my brother’s basement, because I took a year off to travel and for that year didn’t have an apartment. We do seem to be staying in Colorado, so I suppose I will have to arrange to get them here at some point. I have older TBR books in Canada - I used to have a bookshelf of unread books that I’d grab a bunch off whenever I was visiting home, but I don’t have them listed anywhere to know what might be on those shelves.

message 82: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3837 comments I started An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser. Added to my TBR on April 2012. It’s very good so far! At over 800 pages, it will take a few weeks to read.

message 83: by Jackie, Solstitial Mod (new)

Jackie | 2450 comments Mod
I read The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie. When I first joined, I went through and marked all of her books as either Read or Want to Read. So for this prompt I went to my used bookstore and grabbed one that I hadn't read yet. This one was ok, middle of the road for her. It's a very old paperback edition though and the last page is an advertisement for "a revolutionary reducing plan" called Calories Don't Count, which I got a good laugh out of.

My favorite series ever. I am up to the 5th book!

message 85: by ash | (new)

ash | (sffreads) I officially started The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks last night. It has been on my tbr list since Nov 2013.

message 86: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I don't keep a TBR list on goodreads. But I have a pile of Murakami books in storage (I think) that were a gift from an ex that I have never read. We broke up in 2012 so those books have definitely been waiting for my attention for quite a long time. For this topic I chose Kafka on the Shore.

message 87: by Emily (new)

Emily (momoftwins89) | 59 comments For this prompt I'm reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It was the very first book that I put on my to-read shelf on May 29, 2013 and my to-read shelf is at almost 11,000 now (how did that happen??? 😂) I just recently purchased a copy of the book secondhand and it was perfect for this prompt. Currently reading and really enjoying.

message 88: by Anna (new)

Anna (librairieimaginaire) I read Burial Rites, which I added to my TBR in 2015, probably within a month of getting Goodreads. It took forever to get to it, but I really liked it.

message 89: by MN (last edited Jan 11, 2018 12:54AM) (new)

MN (mnfife) I've read Dickens, The Mystery of Edwin Drood , and loved it. It's unfinished, which is a little frustrating, but this is more than compensated by the characters, which are wonderfully eccentric. I'm ashamed to admit that the book had been on my TBR shelf since July 2009!

message 90: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments I added Dragons of Autumn Twilight to my TBR when I joined GR, on the 1st Jan 2013.
It's the 1st book that I TBRized (I love another series by the authors, so I thought it'd be nice to try something else by them). As the translation for the ebook had a huge sale in 2017, I bought it and will use it for the challenge. My 2nd option was World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War.

message 91: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 554 comments I have read 'Letter to George Clooney' by Debra Adelaide for this week. This is a book of short stories which I really enjoyed. I had not made a TBR list on this site, but have a large collection of unread books on my shelves at home, due to my addiction to the bookshelves of charity shops. The title story is about a Sudanese refugee whose face was pushed into a magazine cover featuring George Clooney, while she was being brutalised, and she was able to concentrate on his face to avoid thinking about what was happening to her. Powerful!

message 92: by Jake (new)

Jake Kropik (jkjkjk15) Since I’m not on computer atm i can’t link my title, but this week i am ready A Madness So Doscreet by Mindy McGinnis. I loved The Female of the Species, so i have high hopes!

message 94: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sterling | 452 comments I'm reading Before the Fall by Noah Hawley. I added it to my Goodreads TBR on December 17, 2016. I'm a little over halfway through at the moment, and interested to see how it ends up.

message 95: by Hellie (new)

Hellie | 35 comments Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman
This just sounds great. Harry Potter with a Scythe instead of a wand. Brilliant!!

message 96: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Holy crap, Emily - 11,000!? I thought my TBR was up there, it’s a blip compared to yours. You go girl! 😂

message 97: by Bryony (new)

Bryony (bryony46) | 1081 comments I couldn't decide what to read for this week but I finally decided to read Why Love Matters: How Affection Shapes a Baby's Brain by Sue Gerhardt, partly as I already own a copy and I'm trying to limit the number of books I buy.

I did try reading it last year sometime and gave up. When I started reading I was reminded why I struggled with it before and although I finished it this time I didn't really enjoy it. On the positive side though, I did learn something from it and at least it's shortened my TBR!

message 98: by Kathy Jo (new)

Kathy Jo (kjsotr) | 304 comments The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was one of my first 10 books when the topic was announced and I started my list. However, I decided to take the trilogy out and list the individual books. I read book one last year, so The Two Towers it is!

I am almost done, only 25 pages left. I have the third book on the agenda for later on in the challenge.

I was really dreading this book because The Fellowship of the Ring was so difficult to get through. My 12 year old son assured me this one was easier and faster, and he was right. (As a side note, one of these books fulfilled my son's AR fiction goal for the quarter, so we don't need to worry about fiction until the spring quarter !)

message 99: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2285 comments what is "AR fiction"?

message 100: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (amspivak) | 28 comments This week I read Small Great Things. I added it to my TBR the very first day I joined Goodreads on December 28, 2016. I've officially read 7/10 first books that I added to my account! Picoult is one of my favorite authors. I love the way she touches on key social justice issues impacting the United States today.
