In 2019 we would like to encourage our members to read 1001 books from noted authors from around the world. We will focus on 6 continents (omitting Antarctica). We will cover a continent for two months but might divide up according to countries or regions. We will focus on culture which is a pretty broad subject. So you might focus on what is this country like as far as geography, what ethnic groups are represented, political themes, etc.

Each month we will post a set of authors that represent those cultures and couple of books by those authors. Admins (probably the shelf personality) will also be creating a discussion thread for each month where you can discuss the book you chose.

Each month might be different so look for directions each month.

Hopefully there will be enough choices that no one will have read all the options. I do not plan to allow substitutions. Please check with an admin if you really haven't read any of the options.

See January for scoring for January. Only give yourself credit for books you read, discussed and reviewed. I picked all books listed as important authors representing that culture. Some authors may be of a different South American country but they were listed as writing about the culture that I have listed. P.S. I haven't read all of these so there is a good chance that I will make mistakes.

I thought I had listed the Continents and when they would be read next; can't find it so I did the randomizer again.

March/April: Africa

May/June: Australia

July/August: Europe

September/October: Asia

Nov/December: North America (this will include Canada and Mexico and the Caribbean Islands).

Extra Credit:
Antartica (one book; The Mountains of Madness) if you want to read this and try to make a cultural analysis; feel free.
Ocean/Island: (could read The Swarm) or one of the islands not part of a continent. The name “Oceania” justly establishes the Pacific Ocean as the defining characteristic of the continent.

Pip | 1822 comments Have you a list of Australian books, or can we choose ourselves?

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments I'd be partial to all of Oceania/choose ourselves personally. I was hoping to read Faces in the Water from NZ if I can get my hands on it, and I have A Town Like Alice and Oscar and Lucinda ready to go for May. There aren't a huge number of Australian books on the list, and I've already read a few of them.

I think there are a lot of books for Australia so going to stick with that but I did add Oceania to the extra credit items so you can still read your books for New Zealand.
