I am a second generation reader. My mother and my aunt read all of these books and fought over who owned which ones. Now I have my own library and, like another poster, I could never pick just one to be a favourite although These Old Shades and Devil's Cub are front runners along with Sylvester and The Grand Sophy.

I don't know if I ever introduced myself here, but it has been so long since I last logged in here or picked up a Heyer book-- or any novel actually.
Hi everybody!
I've been a lover of Heyer since I was in about 10th grade, I think, so it has been quite a few years. My school library was amazing and had several of Heyer's novels. The first one I finished was Simon the Coldheart. I'd say my favorite is Frederica. I started Devil's Cub but couldn't finish it and when I saw the book of this month, I really wanted to try finishing it this month.

Hello - my name is Mary, I've been a member of this group for about 4 years now. I found this thread today when I was gathering info to invite a new friend to the group. My first GH was The Corinthian, given to me by another friend about 10 years ago. I won't say I was hooked, but enough so that I started looking for others in the local used book stores. 2nd was The Black Moth, and then I was hooked! My favorite is a really difficult choice, there are so many, but I'd say Cotillion. Thank you to everyone in this group for your posts, they truly enhance the reading pleasure.

It IS so difficult to pick a favorite! And then a few years later, it changes - I keep a rotating top five!

Hi, everyone. I just found this group - I don't know why I haven't searched for it before.

The first Heyer I read was not a success. I was in Jr. High and loved reading, mostly classics and mysteries. A girl I knew insisted I should try romance, which I didn't read. She pushed a Heyer, April Lady I think, on me and I didn't like it. I remember at the end thinking "Is this supposed to be a happy ending? I'm supposed to be glad that this nice girl married this awful man?" lol I avoided Romance and Heyer like the plague for some years after that.

Then, while haunting a tiny used bookstore in Hanford, CA, for mysteries I found some of Heyer's. I picked up a couple and loved them. I've read all of them several times, and really enjoy them, though I don't care for Penhallow.

Eventually I tried some of her regular books. I confess I love the humerous ones a lot. So my favorite non-mystery is The Grand Sophy/Frederica/The Unknown Ajax/The Talisman Ring. You've all read that one, right? :)

Everytime I finish The Grand Sophy I think "When I grow up I want to be just like Sophy." I'm 64 now. Haha

I agree with you! of all Heyer's characters Sophy is the one I admire because she is so brave and has such a loving heart. And she believes in action, never just waiting passively, she makes things happen. Pretty much my opposite.
I never met anyone who came to read Heyer after liking her mysteries first, only the other way around so that's interesting right there.

Totally agree about April Lady not being a great gateway or first Heyer! It might be one of my least fav of all of her works.

We are reading Heyer's Terrible Timothy Mysteries now, so please hop on over to the threads if you have or would like to read them. And feel free to comment on any of your fav Heyer's in their discussion threads in the Group Reads folder.

I am fond of Nell & Giles (April Lady) but I would never recommend anyone start with that novel due to the (view spoiler)[weak plot. (hide spoiler)]

The read of They Found Him Dead is just winding down now, but we will be starting Duplicate Death on the first of March if you want to join us. :)

I’ve always been quite fond of Nell and Giles too and although it’s not a top favourite, I have returned to it several times over the years. I tend to dislike plots based on misunderstandings which could be solved by folk actually talking to each other, but I still like it - weak plot and all!

Hi, I'm Sarah (from NZ).

I'm pretty sure my Dad introduced me to Heyer and when I was in high school I read anything of hers I could get my hands on! That was a good 30 years ago now so I can't remember which was my first. I also don't know what my favourites would be, maybe because I like to wait until I've forgotten a fair bit of the story before I re-read anything. Powder and Patch and The Unknown Ajax come to mind as being ones I enjoyed though.

It's about time I read them again though, and I figure the group reads is a good way to do it, so I'm looking forward to joining you all each month for that.

My favorite Heyer books are The Grand Sophy, These old Shades, The Devil’s Cub, The Masqueraders, Black Sheep, The Talisman Ring, The Quiet Gentleman and the Unknown Ajax.

I am new to the Georgette Heyer world, but fast becoming a big fan. I started at the start for a first read - my first read was The Black Moth which was simply delightful. Thanks Jackie, that is a really good question. My husband picked me up a copy of Bath Tangle on Friday, also before the libraries shut here, I was able to order some of Georgette's mysteries so I though it might be fun to read one of her mysteries.. what would you recommend for a Georgette newbie like myself? Which book are you currently reading?

I'll just mention that Detection Unlimited was the final contemporary mystery GH wrote. I originally read them out of order & it didn't bother me, but some people only like to read series books in order.

TQG is a wonderful book! Please don’t read it looking for a mystery. People who do miss the point and some of the most talented characterizations of her career!

Since you asked for suggestions, I'll put in my two cents. :) I love her humorous books, like The Grand Sophy, The Unknown Ajax, and Frederica. I also really like her mysteries - that's how I first discovered Heyer, with Footsteps in the Dark. Other good ones include Duplicate Death, Envious Casca and Behold, Here's Poison. (I don't care for Penhallow, though.)
Heyer wrote several different types of stories, I'm sure you'll enjoy finding your favorites!

Oh wow! I discovered her about 15 years ago and have already read and reread her novels so many times. Welcome to the wonderful world of Georgette Heyer and welcome to the club! I love her books for the same reasons you do.
