Plot about a family whose oldest male is cursed by uncontrollable wanderlust. This curse has affected every generation.

The family refers to it as "The Call", it could strike at anytime and when it does the male drops what he is doing and just takes off for years at a time.

The male occasionally return for short stays but eventually they are called away again. Some never return and are presumed dead as the curse is no defense against life's dangers or pitfalls.

The story is set in a rural area with farms a small town and a river nearby.

The main characters are the oldest male child, a neighbor girl who is in love with him, the mother, grandmother and numerous siblings

At the time of the story the boy is waiting in dread of receiving his call as age is not a factor fir when the male recieves it the first time. He is doing everything he can to provide for the future needs of the family since he believes he won't be there to support them.

For this reason he spurns the love of the girl because he swears the curse will die with him as he will not marry. This is the main tension of the plot

I read it over 30 years ago. It was a paperback I bought at a flea market

I believe it is set in early 20th century rural America - I dont think it was set in any particular state but had feeling it might have been northeast

The fantasy is very specific to the mysterious CALL everything else is normal life

No magic except the everyday kind - love conquers all.

Charles, please put some info into the title of your thread. Many of our group do not read any threads except for the ones that are in their genres, and they don't bother with books that say some variation of the "help me find this title" since that is what this file is for. Please read https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... for suggestions/rules of our group.

Ok, lecture over. Now for the questions:
1) when did you read this--within a decade if you can't settle on a closer number
2) where is it set--U.S., U.K., Canada, France?
3) when is it set--modern, historical--what era if you can pen that down? If it's a fantasy world, what kind of fantasy world--medieval, early industrial revolution, steampunk etc.
4) is there more magic than just "the call"? And are there more fantasy elements like fae, vampires, werewolves etc?

Charles, I added plot details to the topic header. Feel free to edit it (using the desktop website, not the mobile app).

Any chance this wanderlust is referred to (in English) as something else like "the calling" "the ____ call", "the call of ____", etc.?

From what I can remember the family referred to it as The Call. I.E. when I get my Call.

Thanks. sorry for delay but have been busy on other projects.
I believe the story is fantasy due to the mystical implications of the
Call; but set in a normal setting.

Thanks for you help

I strongly believe it was an American author due to descriptions of possible early 20 century rural life.
