Carissa | 2 comments Hi there! I’m Carissa. I’m a homeschool mom to 6 kiddos and this is my very first year to join a reading challenge but am finally able to pick up a book now and then.

I live on an acreage just outside Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I am new to GoodReads and am just setting up books I have read and books I want to read!

I set my first goal this year at 40 books simply because I am turning 40 this year and thought that would be a good match, ;-)

Good luck to everyone this year!!

Carissa

Thanks for your kind words! It's a small world, I'm seeing people from Canada, the Netherlands, and Mexico and yet still find someone from NJ!

Kszr | 62 comments Hello, I am kszr. I am a lifelong reader, who has been tracking progress in excel (just a geek at heart). After I turned 49 someone asked me what i would do with my 50th year, and I created a challenge to read a New York times best seller from the week of my birth for every year I have been alive. I had no idea that there were groups of people out here doing this sort of thing all the time!
I am a lover of contemporary fiction - historical novels, dramas, thrillers, romance, short stories etc. I have been trying to expand my reading to other genres, and have been adding in biographies and memoirs lately, and a few non-fiction books, also. I am just a sucker for a well written book.
This year I am challenging myself to read 60 books.

message 754: by Sakii (new)

Sakii | 2 comments Heyy, I'm Saki

I would like to get myself back into the flow of reading this year as I feel like I have gotten lazy and just spend most of my free time on Netflix, whereas before I would spend plenty of time reading. I do enjoy it which is why I have joined this challenge, in the hope to get me back into the reading flow.

I just finished reading The Little Teashop of Lost and Found by Trisha Ashley and loved how it was such a light, warm and easy read. Perfect for summer although I finished it in winter haha.

I am now reading The Keeper of Lost Things and so far, I'm enjoying it.

I would love for anyone to recommend me any books that they particularly loved, of any genre.

Anchita (autumn02) | 14 comments Hello, I'm Ally.
I find solace in books, the mere sight of books can lift up my spirits. Easy to say, I get high on books. I'm new to reading and haven't explored all it's genres yet. I'm fond of the thriller, mystery and crime genre but I'm always open to reading a good book from any genre.
I'm aiming to read 24 books this year.
This group is very interesting and I look forward to participating here.
Happy Reading!

Hi Saki, welcome to the group!
Yes, I watch too much Netflix too I'm afraid but joining this group has helped me to spend more time reading (like I used to in the old days lol).
If you'd like some recommendations you have better chance of people replying if you post your request in your personal thread or add a topic in the Let's Chat folder:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Good luck and have fun!!

Hi Syndie, welcome to the group! For me, joining this group in 2017 was a real help to get me to read more/get back into reading after a reading slump of many years. I started out with a tentative goal of 12 books, upped it to 24 during the year and ended up reading 46 books!!! All thanks to this group, the great challenges, the awesome group and buddy reads and last but certainly not least, the amazing group members who were always supportive, motivating and encouraging. I hope you'll have a similar experience.
Looking forward to your updates. Feel free to add me! :)

message 764: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 7 comments Hi everyone! My name is Cait and I currently live near Richmond, Virginia. I say currently because my husband is in the military and we're always moving (every 3-4 years on average).

I like reading literary fiction, classics, narrative non-fiction, short stories, horror/suspense, southern gothic, victorian/neo-victorian, postmodern fiction, and true crime.

I always join the yearly GR challenge goal, but I didn't know there was a group for it until this year when I ran across a group post in my update feed. I'm quite excited!

I have a number of reading goals this year. First and foremost, I am challenging myself to read a minimum of 52 books this year - basically one per week. I've read 4 so far this year, so I'm off to a good start. I also have sub-goals to read 12 (one per month) non-fiction, short story, classic, contemporary, and new release books. I have also planned for a number of different challenges, such as the Book Riot Read Harder challenge or the Ultimate Pop Sugar Challenge. Last but not least, I'm am working on a project where I read The Novel: A Biography and then read some of the books discussed in it. It may be overly ambitious, but I love all of the planning and organizing that goes with all of these different reading goals.

Alexis Montivero | 1 comments Hi, there! I'm really bad writing in English, so maybe I will make a lot of mistakes.

I'm from Mendoza, Argentina and I'm the kind of person who can't stop reading a book till ends (even if doesn't like it only to have more arguments to say why). But not in a insufferable way, I really love to hear someone talk about his/her favorite books.

My reading goal is a book per week. I believe that the only problem with that is get the discipline to make the habit -and that is more easy if you have friends doing the same!

Sheri | 5 comments Hi! My name is Sheri and I am from Manitoba Canada. I enjoy reading historical fiction, drama, thrillers, crime and suspense books. I can't remember how I came across Goodreads, but I am glad I did! My reading goal for 2018 is 20 books!

Curlyhair | 53 comments Hi everyone.

I’m Amanda, but known as. Curlyhair on here. My book genre is crime/thriller and I don’t really read anything else. I’ve been a member for a few years now and I’m a member of a few groups. I read when I can, which isn’t as much as I would like. My goal this year is 28.
I’m from the Uk, the North East, near Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Brigitte Little | 1 comments Hi. I'm Brigitte from the Jersey Shore. I like to read historical fiction, classic, mystery and romance. I'm not into science fiction or horror. I was hesitant to join the challenge, because I read for pleasure and felt like this might cause me to "speed read" just to complete a certain number of books. I recently came across a thread in my FB book club that changed my mind. A member of the group said she uses the challenge as encouragement to remember to read with her busy schedule. I also, like meeting other book lovers and seeing their book reviews. Nice to meet you all. Good luck with your challenges.

Sourav Hi everyone! I'm Sourav from India which is in south-Asia.
I like to read crime, historical fiction & thriller novels. Currently, I'm into classic short stories, don't know exactly how I ended up with short stories.
Reading Goal? Picked 60 as a target for 2018, but I would love to read more than that.

message 774: by JulienV (new)

JulienV Hi there, I'm Julien from France. I basically read everything I can get my hands on, but I prefer Stephen King novels, literary fiction, and American authors. I discovered Goodreads last month (through Twitter or Instagram, I don't remember) and I'm hooked! I joined this group to share thoughts and advice, and find new reading ideas. My last buy is Joël Dicker's The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, and I'm currently reading Stephen King's Cell.

My reading goal for 2018 is at least 50 books (graphic novels and comics included). I'm part of a literary jury this year for the Livre de Poche editions, and I'm really excited about it (I'll have to read 30 books, so that's 2/3 of my goal!). I also want to read War and Peace, which has been sitting unread on my shelves for too long.

Martina Bučková | 38 comments Hey guys, my name is Martina and I am from Slovakia. I see there are already members from my country, which is nice 🙂.

My favorite genre is fantasy, scifi and crime, though recently I've joined several groups to broaden this and get a hand on something new I was avoiding like autobiographies and historical novels.

I found the group by browsing the groups on GR and checking where my interest in books fits to the interest of the group, and here I am 😉.

My reading goal? Hmm did not yet set one but I guess it's gonna be 50 books. I hope I will manage as my work requires a lot of time and travelling and then the rest of time I try to give my family and of course books.
Hope to find some interesting books here and new friends.

Hi Brigitte, welcome to the group!
I can understand your doubt, but it is important to set your goal to a number of books that wouldn't make you feel pressured. If that means that you surpass it easily, the better. You can always raise it along the way should you want to.
I like to read and discuss books together and the monthly group and buddy reads in this group make that possible.
If you only want to post the books you read and your thoughts about it then that is fine too.
Most important thing is that you have fun! Happy reading!

Azure | 2 comments Hi everyone! I love reading all types of books but I especially like crime, mystery, historical and fantasy novels. This year is going to be really busy for me and I don't want to distract myself from my responsibilities by reading so my goal is to read 55 books this year. I'm hoping to finish reading some of the books I already have at home before I read new ones.

Alice-Elizabeth (Prolific Reader Alice) (marriedtobooks44) | 9 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Alice, I'm nineteen years old and live in England. My reading challenge goal this year is 300 books XD

I love to read and review a variety of genres. I personally prefer stories for a teen audience however am very open-minded. I love making new friends here so if you love books, feel free to add me and see what I read for this year.

My boyfriend is new to Goodreads, he likes YA, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Horror and Non-Fiction. His goal is not 300 for the year. But please add him, he'll always accept: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7...

Welcome to the group Michelle! Glad that you found us and decided to join!

I'm a slow reader myself although I have been reading more (faster? or just more often lol) since joining this group. It is a very active group with lots of great challenges and awesome, friendly, supportive group members. Also I'm a real big fan of the monthly group and buddy reads. It's fun to read and discuss books together. I've read books I probably wouldn't have otherwise and it encourages me to read more regularly (daily now, even if only for 10 minutes).

Hi Arianne, welcome to the group!
You mean you're afraid of neglecting your responsibilities because of your wanting to read? I have noticed that myself last year. I had been in a reading slump for years and was really happy and grateful to have been abel to rekindle my passion for reading. But I notice now that I don't do other things that I would either like to do or should be doing.... There are just too many great books wanting to be read and I'm quite a slow reader unfortunately.

If you want to bring down your TBR pile before buying/reading new books you might be interested in joining the Clear the Shelves Challenge.

In any case hope you'll enjoy the group. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!

I live in England, and love most books especially historical fiction, the classics, fantasy and Christian theology books, quite a mix there.

My reading goal for this year is 30 books, which will also include books read with the children (not my 2 year olds Julia Dondalson books though, or we would hit 30 books in one day).

Looking forward to making friends with lots of other book worms and sharing challenges, book reccomendations and the like.

Alex (pagesandspines) | 41 comments Hello group.

I'm Alex, I've actually been haunting around this group for sometime without ever joining in and I've decided to change that.

So, I don't have many interesting things to say about myself. I read, obviously, hehe, and I'm also a musician. My reading tastes are fairly vast, it's easier to comment on what I rarely pick up than what I do. To that end, I don't usually read "romances," (as in books marketed especially for the romance content) but I I'll give it a go if it has an intriguing story and good characters. I also rarely read contemporary novels, but I will pick up one of these more often than a romance. Everything else is pretty much up for grabs.

I suppose my favourite genres would be (in fiction anyway, no telling where nonfiction will lead me) historical mysteries, fantasy, and classic lit. But again, I read a bit of everything.

I'm looking forward to talking books here. Please feel free to disagree with me as I'm not so overly attached to my own ideas that I feel like people can't have their own.

- :)

Adam Driscoll (mwanzo) Hey everyone - My name is Adam Driscoll. I'm from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. I have always read to be a learner over the last 10 years. It is something that has been nurtured in me by two of my closest mentors.

However, last year, I actually fell in love with reading. It was like something switched in me between reading with a purpose, and reading being the purpose. I picked up my first fiction book in years and fell in love with the craft and the art of writing - discovering worlds beyond. It was such a formative impact on me that we decided last year instead of going on a vacation together as a family - we invested in a chaise lounger that now serves as a "travel pod" for my family and I. Almost daily my wife, kids and I find ourselves on this chair only to immerse ourselves in the pages that take us all over this world and beyond our imagination.

My goal this year is to read 75 books. I have mix of biographies, Canadian History, American History, fiction, humour, cultural topics, I always try to read a book written for women (its a feeable attempt to understand them :D) . . . poetry, and this year am adding two Canadian First Nations works to my list. I welcome your recommends and look forward to the community of this group as we meet in the pages.

I found this group looking for a challenge for the new year. I am hopping to read at least 50 books this year and hopefully expand to a 100.

Kayleigh {K-Books} (kayley_12) | 10 comments Hi everyone,
My name is Kayleigh and I am a 27 year old full time teacher from England.
I have been blogging over at K-Books since 2011 and I love reading mainly YA books, especially fantasy.

My goal this year is to read 50 books which shouldn't be an issue as I finished 66 in 2017

Wow, that's amazing Adam! Just see you all sitting there and traveling in time and space to worlds outside this reality. It is what I love about reading too. The last years I've been having some concentration problems, but before that, you could call me all you wanted, I wouldn't react because I wouldn't be able to hear you...I wasn't here....

Hope you enjoy the group as much as I do. Have fun and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
