Susy (susysstories) Cheryl wrote: "Hi I’m Cheryl and I’m from Scotland :)

Hi Cheryl, welcome to the group!

I like lots of different book genres it just depends on my mood but I tend to mostly read crime/thrillers or fantasy books.

My favourites too, next to horror.

... a friend and I have also picked a book from the New York Times Bestseller list that we had not read, one from each year since our date of birth just for something a bit different.

Nice idea!!

Hoping to broaden my reading horizons a wee bit and maybe even get a few recommendations from fellow book lovers. Generally hoping to do more with my goodreads app as well :) "

It's good to have you. How actively you participate is up to you of course but we do love reading posts from fellow group members. Are you planning on joining any of the challenges or maybe some of the monthly group/buddy reads?
In any case, I hope you have fun!

Welcome to the group Katy!
My favourite genres too with the exception of romance :)

I just happened to stumble on this group and look forward to meeting everyone.
I’m fairly friendly so feel free to drop a line! "

Glad you did Katy! Looking forward to your posts and seeing what you'll be reading! Have fun!

Fictionophile (fictionophile) | 3 comments Hello everyone!
My name is Lynne and I live in Nova Scotia, Canada.
I've been a very active member of Goodreads for quite a few years now, and I've been blogging steadily since my retirement from the public library system where I live. I worked for many years as a library cataloger.
My blog is called Fictionophile. I review mostly mysteries and thrillers, with some literary fiction, women's fiction, and historical fiction as well. The blog also has other books related posts.
I review for NetGalley and Edelweiss.
For the past few years my Goodreads Reading Challenge has been 100 books. That number seems to be right for me.

So I hope to find more discussion here! "

Hi Ilja, welcome to the group! You have come to the right place to discuss books. Every month there is a group read and several buddy reads that you can join. In the discussion threads you just post what you want whenever you want. No rules (except of course marking spoilers). Enjoy!!

Kayla (kayla622) | 6 comments Hi everyone. My name is Kayla. I joined Goodreads a few years ago but haven't really participated in any of the communities here. I like reading but had fallen out of the habit, despite making reading goals in the past few annual challenges. This year, I am making a resolution to read more and replace meaningless social media time with reading time. I mostly want to get out of the habit of lying in bed reading banal stuff on my phone and replace that time with reading. This year, I have set a modest goal of 12 books. One book a month. If I exceed it, then good on me.

I like reading all genres, however I am not into books that don't have any substance. I won't be reading the Harlequin books or anything of that ilk. I am also not a fan of science fiction or horror, so those types of books don't interest me. I most enjoy fiction with good stories, especially those set during a historical era. I also like non-fiction, mostly history and autobiographies/biographies. One of my favorite non-fiction authors is Erik Larson who wrote the fabulous "The Devil in the White City." I'm also a big fan of film, especially classic film, and reading autobiographies/biographies about my favorite classic film stars.

I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, on the west-side of the Portland, OR metro area.

Hi Kayla, welcome to the group!
For me, joining this group in 2017 was a real help to get me to read more/get back into reading after a reading slump of many years. I started out with a tentative goal of 12 books, upped it to 24 during the year and ended up reading 46 books!!! All thanks to this group, the great challenges, the awesome group and buddy reads and last but certainly not least, the amazing group members who were always supportive, motivating and encouraging. I hope you'll have a similar experience.
In any case I hope you have fun participating in the group!

Shelley (book_drunkard) | 7 comments Happy new year to everyone. I am Allison and live in North Alabama in the United States. I am a mom to three wonderful girls, ages 21, 17, and 15. I love to read, garden, quilt, cook, and bake. I have been married to my husband for almost 23 years and we have 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 fish, and 5 hermit crabs (I think...probably need to check on that later today and make sure they are still there). I will read pretty much anything that catches my eye but tend to steer away from political books because I get way too much of that being married to a poli-sci/English major. Some days I tell him I would turn off the BBC, FoxNews and CNN but am afraid he would die from withdrawals. Anyway, I am looking forward to meeting people in this wonderful group and reading more this year.

Cheryl Rischer | 1 comments Howdy!
I am a wife and mother of two. I live in DeSoto, TX which is a suburb(?) about 13 miles south of downtown Dallas.

I enjoy reading fiction and have been really challenged with willingly expanding my author base. I also enjoy reading 'self-help' and motivation books as well. I have been a member of Good Reads for a while, and have recently discovered the reading challenge. My goal is to read 49 books this year before my 50th birthday! #49before50.

Hi Susy and thank you for the warm welcome! And no worries about calling me Colleen. :-) I like that we have similar taste in book genres. As far as writing goes, I love to write dystopian stories. I would love to try my hand at horror but it just seems so difficult. Maybe one day. Every year I do National Novel Writing Month in November where you have to write 50,000 words in the thirty days. I have completed three books that way but have made no moves to try to get them published. Haha. Maybe one day. This group is great so far and I have already joined a few of the yearly challenges and definitely plan on participating in the group reads. Thanks again for making me feel so welcome!

Patricia K. (ilovebagels) | 1 comments Hello, I'm Patricia from Washington, DC (originally from NYC). This is my second reading challenge. Last year I set out to read seven books and I did just that. This year I've upped the ante to ten books and I'm off to a good start. I have a diverse taste in books. Right now I'm reading a classic, The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy. Anna Karenina was one of the books I read last year.

I'm looking forward to this challenge and to interacting with the people in this group.

message 673: by Danika (new)

Danika (neekie89) Hi everyone,

My name is Danika and I’m from New Zealand.

I’ve recently, in the last few years, developed a taste for horror and crime thrillers, partnered with feminist writings. The political climate globally has also peaked my interest in writings by political leaders and writings on economics, race and policy.

I read everything though really, and will pick anything up. I’m a finisher, so even if I don’t enjoy a book I fight my way through (the one exception being the 50 Shades trilogy. I just couldn’t do it).

I’m currently chopping and changing between a few books depending on my mood - I’ve a busy mind, so the tone of book has to match me in the moment. This also means I’ve chosen 36 as my target this year - 3 books a month if possible!

My one consistent though, is rereading the Harry Potter series at least once every two years. They are my comfort blanket.

Looking forward to seeing the book choices and the discussions. Good luck with your challenges! And May your novels take you on adventures from the comfort of your own space.

Danika

Hello! I'm Minnie and I am from Seattle, Washington. I have lived here all my life, all 15 years of it.

I came across this group as I was searching for some fun clubs to join. And, also, I did notice the 2018 reading challenge icon of Goodreads, so that caught my attention.

My book preferences would be chick-lit and YA. I usually like reading happy, light stuff. I do also prefer contemporary fiction. But you do need some variation so I also read some sci-fi, fantasy, and thrillers. And if I had to read nonfiction it would be something involving psychology.

So, this year I have decided that I want to read more books for fun. My goal is to read 50 books and hopefully I'll read much more.

Kardelen | 1 comments Hey Everyone!

The reason I wanted to join the challenge as well as the group, was well.. I used to LOVE reading, a book a day type of kid. After a while I guess life got in the way and I forgot how much I enjoyed reading. I'm now trying to catch up on all the good reads I missed!

I like reading mysteries, thrillers/horror, poetry, humour, YA/series, and some psychology/philosophy as well as some self improvement.

My goal is to read at least one book a week; and I am currently reading The Stand by Stephen King which is over 1000 pages; so wish me luck!

I am Jennifer from Texas. I was an elementary and middle school librarian so I have read lots of YA. I recently moved to the other side and I am now part of the Technology department for my school district. I tend to lean toward Science Fiction and Fantasy with some classics thrown in, but I will give any book a chance.

My goal is 50 books this year, but I hope to do more than that.

Debbie (debelizlam) | 12 comments Hi everyone! I'm Debbie from Livingston County, Michigan. I'm a 40-something, life-long reader. I used to teach English - and with that, reading was a big part of my job. Since moving into psychology, I have had to try a bit harder to work reading in.

I hope to meet (or exceed) my goal of 36 books this year. I'm an audiobook listener while in the car, which helps a lot.

I'm looking to stretch myself out of my well-read genres and into others that I've not dabbled much in like fantasy and science fiction.

Chelin Hi! I'm Chelin, from Vancouver BC. I have recently gotten back into reading after going years without (hooray depression). Since starting a new job in September 2017, I've gone through 2-4 books per month, and I'm hoping to keep it up through 2018!

My favourite genres are fantasy (high fantasy, urban fantasy and everything in between), historical fiction/romance (give me alllll the costume dramas), dystopian adult fiction, some YA (depending on how much emphasis is on the Y) and romance (but with an actual plot please!) and science fiction. I'm open to other genres as well. The only genre that really hasn't piqued my interest is non-fiction, aside from a few autobiographies.

Can't wait to read and keep up with everyone's progress!

I'm Sarah, and I'm from Maryland in the USA. I'll read almost anything, but YA fantasy is my favorite. I'm an avid but slow reader, and my reading time this year will be limited because I'm starting my second semester of grad school. Last year I read ten books, five fewer than in 2016. I think I'll stick with a goal of ten books per year at least until I'm done with school. If I read more than that, then great!

Well, you can celebrate and give a party for example or reward yourself by buying a book (or something else if you prefer lol). And/or you can raise your goal and test your limits.
Most important part though is that you enjoy yourself on your reading journey. Hopefully you'll discover some amazing reads along the way. Happy reading!
