message 601: by Jakob (new)

Jakob (4841) Hi! I'm Jakob and I'm situated in Iceland. I actually joined this group last year but never participated -- though I always had a read through all the challenges which sometimes sparked book ideas for me. Figured I might as well join in this year.

I read a lot as a kid (in 6th grade I went through ~220 books in the space of the school year) but pretty much stopped reading in my late teens. Then a friend of mine introduced me to Goodreads a few years back and the ability to record and keep track of what I'd been reading sucked me back in. Obviously works for me, since in 6th grade our teacher made us write down all the books we read, when we started and finished, etc., which is what drove me to read all those books in the first place.

Anyway, I've been steadily increasing the amount of books I read each year, and this year I'm aiming for two a month (or 24). I read 20 in 2017, just barely meeting my goal because I could never find any time to read. I actually finished the last chapter of the 20th book today (January 1) - a book I started in the middle of the night on Dec 31 just to be able to meet my goal.

I haven't quite figured out what my preferred genre is. I pretty much alternate between fiction and nonfiction and I've found I quite like dystopian novels (1984 is my favorite book, hands down). This past year I actually read quite a bit of sci-fi, which isn't a genre I would've said I liked had anybody asked me. Turns out I do (probably goes hand in hand with my preference for dystopias, now that I think about it).

Alright, word vomit over. See y'all around.

I'm just starting to read the books hehe. But I've logged hundreds of hours into TW3, which was the reason I wanted to start reading it.

Hi Bedanta, welcome to the group. No I don't think there's any video. All new members do get a message explaining how to navigate the group. And there's the thread How to do things on GR: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you have any questions, you can send me a message or post it on the thread Questions for mods: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Hi Kat, welcome to the group!
I'm a cat lover like you, though I don't have a preference.
I always find it hard to give recommendations, but if you're looking for those AND to connect with fellow book lovers you might want to join the monthly group and buddy reads. That way you get ideas for what to read ánd get to read and discuss them with others. I have to say they're a lot of fun and quite addictive (I'm a fan obviously). We'll be starting with Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot series for example if you like mysteries. This month we're doing The Picture of Dorian Gray and Sense and Sensibility.

Hope you'll have an amazing time participating in this group. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!!

I love YA contemporary and fiction also Middle grade books but I don't mind reading other genres.

Let's just hope that I don't get stuck in a reading slump again.

Kit (screechfox) Hello! I'm Kit and I'm from England!

I tend to prefer fantasy or sci-fi novels, especially ones with LGBT themes. I didn't get as much reading done last year as I would have liked, but I'm hoping to do better this year!

I play a lot of video games in my spare time: Guild Wars 2 and Starbound have been my poisons lately. I enjoy podcasts such as the Penumbra Podcast, and I also do some writing, though I'm terrible at staying on one project for a long time.

Michelle (preslynn) | 14 comments My name is Michelle and I love historical fiction, horror, and have a thing for mid century literature and classic/vintage kids books. Sometimes I venture into romance, mystery and sci-fi.

Other than reading I love old music (50s to 70s), creative writing and crafty stuff like scrapbooking and journaling. Every once in a while I binge play Sims 4 for a bit and then don't touch it for months.

I also can't believe that I did a reading challenge for half of 2017 and never even checked out the community. Social media annoys me so I'm sure my time will be better spent on goodreads.

Michelle (callee7) Hello everyone. My name is Michelle and I live in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
My goal for 2018 is 50 books. I hope to read more, but I like some wiggle room, especially since I homeschool two very active kids as well.
I enjoy mysteries, suspense/thrillers, some romance, and contemporary fiction.
Happy Reading!

I've set 12 again for this year, hope to beat it though. I've tried a couple of genres, willing to try more.
This is my first time using the community, hope to speak to you all again.

Hi Eli (it is shorter and as you say, your GR name, otherwise difficult for me to remember), welcome to the group!
I know it sounds really cliché but you have to love yourself for other people to be able to love you too! Wishing you all the best and a lot of strength. It's there inside of you, you just have to find it and allow yourself to feel it.
I'm sorry but don't have any book recommendations for you. If you would really like some I think you have a better chance if you asked for them in our Let's chat thread because more people tend to read that. Just add a new topic here.
Good luck!

Beatriz (nebula61) | 6 comments Hello, I'm new to the challenge but I've been on goodreads for many years. I notice I'm not reading as much as I used to and it's disturbing. I'm a pretty eclectic reader--in fiction I enjoy science fiction, historical mysteries and romance, steampunk, regencies, some fantasy, some cozy mysteries, some thrillers (especially medical but also historical/political), nordic noir (pretty much anything set in the arctic/antarctic, etc.) and last but not least, poetry. In nonfiction I love biographies (especially of writers and literary figures), science, some history, medical and personal finance. I also love books about books--ancient or modern.

Lynda (lyndy-loo) | 2 comments Hi I am Lynda from Norfolk. I am an avid reader and I guess my favourites would be Chick Lit/Romance. I am totally in love with Cornwall at the moment, so most of the books I read are based around that area. I have just discovered Liz Fenwick and she is amazing. Unfortunately I have read all her books now and have to wait until March for her new one.
I also like Milly Johnson, Carole Matthews, Fern Britton, Daphne Du Maurier and Santa Montifiore.
I love books which hold family secrets and go back to past loves!
I am a member of the 'Book Shop Cafe' facebook page and that's how I learnt about the reading challenge. My challenge this year is 54 books.
Oh by the way I work voluntarily for a charity bookshop. How lucky is that?

Cheryl Hi I’m Cheryl and I’m from Scotland :)

I like lots of different book genres it just depends on my mood but I tend to mostly read crime/thrillers or fantasy books.

I have set myself a reading challenge of 50 books this year because I overshot my goal of 26 by a fair bit last year. My challenge is made up of some of the Popsugar prompts but a friend and I have also picked a book from the New York Times Bestseller list that we had not read, one from each year since our date of birth just for something a bit different.

Hoping to broaden my reading horizons a wee bit and maybe even get a few recommendations from fellow book lovers. Generally hoping to do more with my goodreads app as well :)

Nice to meet you all and good luck accomplishing your goals. :)

message 647: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Dauzat (lokysmom79) | 1 comments Hi everyone!

I’m Tiffany, 38 from Houston, TX. I wanted to quickly introduce myself and share a little about me. I’ve been an avid reader since I first read the Sweet Valley Twins series as a kid. I progressed to loving Black Beauty followed by Shakespeare. Then one day my mom received a box of books in the mail. (I believe this was either the Harlequin book club or the Avon book club and I smuggled a historical romance and promptly fell in love at 13. I decided to be a writer so my grandma bought me a Brother typewriter and I wrote my first historical romance novel at 13. No, it wasn’t published. I realized that at 13 I probably don’t know much about life...or history...or sex, so I decided to try again when I grew up. Needless to say I’ve yet to write that second book, and sadly I’ve long since lost my first one, but it’s okay! I lose myself frequently in the written word and lean towards romance (historical and contemporary), young adult, psychological thrillers, and ghost/horror. I also adore biographies most particularly those that aren’t about modern people.

Clearly I love to read and feel passionately about it. When I’m not enthralled in a book, I’m a mom to a teenaged son and daughter and work in benefits administration all while being married to my best friend.

I can’t wait to get to know you all!! Happy new year!

message 648: by Caitlyn (new)

Caitlyn | 3 comments I'm Caitlyn, from Boise, Idaho. I hope to read at least 50 books this year. I read a pretty wide range of genres: most often sci-fi and fantasy - currently with a preference for urban fantasy - but occasionally also nonfiction psychology/sociology, humorous autobiographies, and regular fiction/literature. I'm hoping to expand into graphic novels with the first of the Sandman books this year.

I just happened to stumble on this group and look forward to meeting everyone.
