Rachel | 1527 comments A short story which I'm almost sure is by Edith Wharton, or a writer with a similar style. I always thought it was in the book Certain People but I've just checked and it's not there.

It's about a group of tourists (I think mostly American, maybe some British) who are going on a day trip in a hot country - I think they are on a cruise and this is one of their activities. It was quite humourous and subtly made fun of the tourists' attitudes. I think one character was a grumpy old lady. Anything else about the plot unfortunately escapes me, except that everyone complains about the heat and the culture of the place they are visiting pretty much passes them by.

Holly (hollylovesbooks) | 759 comments Roman Fever? As the title indicates, it is set in Rome.

Rachel | 3 comments It's not Roman Fever, thanks for the suggestion. It was a larger group of characters and there was more about the geographical surroundings. Also feel it was somewhere outside Europe, maybe Egypt or Morocco?

❀⊱RoryReads⊰❀ | 8 comments OK, I think I remember this story too. The tour group ends up in the holy land (not sure about this) and the grumpy (and really judgy) old lady falls into a pool or a well that Jesus or a saint is supposed to have touched or used and finally shuts up.
Among the tourists is a young married couple and a minister. All have issues or problems of one kind or another. One of the people may have been contemplating having an affair.

Ayshe | 4720 comments Rory, your description made me remember "The Way of the Cross" by Daphne du Maurier. But I had forgotten almost everything about it.

❀⊱RoryReads⊰❀ | 8 comments That's it! Thank you Ayshe. It's been driving me nuts. :)

Ayshe | 4720 comments :) you're welcome, I know the feeling well.

Rachel | 1527 comments Oh, I will check that out too. I was so sure it was Edith Wharton but could be wrong!

Ayshe | 4720 comments Was it really that? I just saw that thread is marked as 'Solved' and I am slightly surprised - I googled about it and it probably fits, but the most I think I remember is someone's (minister's?) worrying and a group of people scattered in the dark.

Rachel | 1527 comments I didn't mark it as solved - maybe one of the mods did? I haven't actually read the Daphne du Maurier story yet so still unsolved as far as I'm concerned!

❀⊱RoryReads⊰❀ | 8 comments Rachel, what about Mark Twain https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8... ?

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1527 comments I haven't read any Mark Twain besides Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn so it's not that.

The du Maurier looks familiar and is probably the one, but I haven't confirmed it yet. Moved this back to Unsolved in the meantime!

Wasn't 'The Towers of Trebizond' by any chance? Rose Macaulay wrote it. Father Chantry-Pigg, Aunt Dot, and several other characters. I remember it was hilarious, and they were traveling in the holy land, I think. It was a long time ago I read it.

It won an award as I recall.

Rachel | 1527 comments 'The Towers of Trebizond' isn't ringing any bells but thanks for the suggestion!

Rachel, did you get a chance to read "The Way of the Cross" by Du Maurier to see if that's your story?

Rachel | 1527 comments It's a bit alarming to realise I've been meaning to follow this up for nearly 18 months! I found an extract online and I'm pretty sure this is the right story so I'm moving to Solved. Thanks Ayshe for finding it!

Glad you found your short story, Rachel. Thanks for the update.

Wikipedia mentions "The Way of the Cross" by Daphne du Maurier is found in Don't Look Now (1971). It has different covers. I'll add this book to the group's bookshelf. Just let us know if you have a different book/anthology in mind.
