This question was inspired by Mika's comment about not having enough time carved out to read all the books she's got started. So ... tell us ... How many books do you typically have set as "currently reading"? And what's the method behind your madness? Are there certain categories of books among the books that you're currently reading?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I tend to have 3-5 going at one time:
*1 classic or non-fiction work
*1 fiction book (usually sci-fi)
*1 audiobook for my commute or to listen to while doing housework or sewing (which may or may not correspond with the above works)
*1 longish children's book for bedtime
*1 children's audiobook for my daughter (which may or may not correspond with the above bedtime book)

Neville Because I have been analysing, specifying and writing computer programs for 30 years I have a very structured approach with every thing I do. My wife says it is a bit over the top and that I spend too much time analysing simple things like this.

I only read 1 at a time.

I have about 1700 books on my Kindle grouped into collections by author and series.

I have a spreadsheet where I list the authors/series/collections, and I have them in groups of 9, 5 murder mystery & 4 time travel or others. This means for author/series with more than 1 book, I will read one every 9th book.

I have selected the sequence of authors using Goodreads ratings with the highest rating first.

I read an author/series in order until complete most of the time, unless it is an author like Dick Francis where I have about 46 books when I have to have a change for a while and move some to read at a later date.

Vickie | 63 comments I used to have 2 or 3 going at one time. Typically at least one fiction and one non-fiction. But, these days I rarely read more than one at a time. Old age may be diminishing my ability to multi-task. :)

CaptKirk42 Classic Whovian (klandersen) | 60 comments Usually just one, sometimes 2. I have tried 3 at a time and I think once 4 but I tend to favor whichever book currently has gotten more exciting, or I am closer to actually finishing.

Garrett Smith (garrettsmith) | 246 comments Michael reads one book at a time and once he starts he usually finishes fairly quickly. I read 3 or more books at a time, and often move at the rate of a slow easily distracted turtle.

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments Usually three:
One I keep at work-usually a library book
One at home on my ipad so I can read in bed at night
One on audio to listen to on my way to and from work each day.

In summer, I may have a 4th paperback to read outside since my ipad does not do well in sunlight.

message 7: by Odette (new)

Odette (odman) Usually two at a time. One book on kindle and one paperback. I can source good quality 2nd hand paperbacks cheaper than kindle books, which are mainly historical fiction. I read everything else on kindle, grouped into collections and try to alternate between these.

message 8: by Tom (new)

Tom Mathews | 119 comments I usually have four going at a time.
an audio book for dog walks and driving,
a book that I read aloud with my teenage daughter,
a 'bathroom' book that can be read in short snippets
and, of course, the book that I just, you know, read.

Timothy Michael Lewis (timothymichaellewis) | 101 comments Usually one apart from abandoned ones - where I might go back to them after a while. I have an eBook in progress on my phone every time I travel so that usually gets finished. Paper books more likely to get abandoned.

Ha. I know that one. I keep having to turn my Kindle on and off so as not to change my perceived reading speed so that my Kindle can tell me how much longer I have 'til the end of the book. Luckily, I've usually gotten a chapter or so in before he comes to bed. That's really the trick of it: get to bed before her. ;)

J. Dallas | 3 comments I read two to four at a time. One non-fiction and then two or three fiction of different genres. When I sit down to read I grab the one that suits my mood at the moment.

I am a start to finish guy mostly....However, if I am not enjoying a book or if it seems to drag, I will try to pick up something small and light to get re-energized to finish the main deal. I also like reading anthologies because I dont have to commit to long stories but a bunch of small bites.

Oh. That was new. GoodReads actually gave me the text of the comment in my email. Finally!

You know, I used to try to always finish a book once I started, but there comes a point when it's hard to count it as "currently reading" because the mood never strikes to read it again. And if it's so long between reads, sometimes you might as well start at the beginning again.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Neville, you're not alone. I actually want to be more methodical, but funky moods and group reads etc. keep interrupting. I really am working on 'highest rated first' though, since I can see the tunnel at the end of the light....

So, yeah, anyway, even though to me it feels like I'm usually only reading one at a time, I actually have a disposable bathroom snippets book of trivia or whatever, children's books that I read if I get to sit down during the day for a little while, poetry in the purse, something on the Mp3 player that I haven't actually even started but there it is, and my main adult book that I go to bed early for so I can read a big chunk of it, alternating between light/serious/non-fiction. Um, that's 3-5....
