Challenges: Year Long Main 2021

♐️ Cherie's Celestial Cycle ♐️
Yes, Jayme. I really did like it. It was an interesting story and I liked the way it was presented. It was a mystery all of the way to the end for me. I was originally planning on reading a different book, but I can read it for something else.
Badge 1, Book 2 of 12 Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Category: Superheros - Aquaman
Task: Read a book with Atlantis or Poseidon in the title.
Book Link: The Atlantis Plague
★★★★★ read Jan 6th
How It Fits: Atlantis is in the title.
Badge 1, Book 3 of 12 Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Category: Elements-Water
Task: Read a book with "water" in the title.
Book Link: Water
★★★★ read Jan 6th
How It Fits: Water is the title.
Maybe it should only have been three stars, but it was a quick, exciting read and I enjoy the author's characters. The plot is not much, but I am willing to see where the series goes and there are only three books left - all on my challenge list under Elements.
Badge 1, Book 4 of 12 Zodiac Sign: Aries
Category: Month-March
Task: Read a book that is set during the specified month or the specified month is in the title.
Book Link: March
★★★★★ read Jan 7th
How It Fits: March is the title.
I was going to read Cold Mountain for the Civil war task, or The Commodore for the Napoleonic War, but neither appeal to me, so I am going to start The Hidden Light of Northern Fires: A Novel for Civil War.
Badge 1, Book 5 of 12 Zodiac Sign: Taurus
Category: Month-April
Task: Read a book that is set during the specified month or the specified month is in the title.
Book Link: The Dead Cat Bounce
★★★★ read Jan 10th
How It Fits: This book takes place during the month of April.
The first page in the book specifies "that day in April when I found the body in my storeroom". Most of the story takes place within two to three weeks of this event.
I would have read this book just to find out the reason for the title, if I had seen it before this challenge. I found it in Listopia under "Books to read in the month of April" listing.
Badge 1, Book 6 of 12 Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius
Category: Element-Fire
Task: Read a book with "Fire" in the title.
Book Link: Written in Fire
★★★★ read Jan 14th
How It Fits: Fire is in the title.
Feels like a long way to go, for some reason. Doomsday Book is taking FOREVER, and my library just notified me that they had purchased To Say Nothing of the Dog and It was ready for me to download.
Nice job so far...I may have to steal some of your month picks. Otherwise, I’ll be wrapping up Patrick O’Brien soon with “Blue at the Mizzen” for my “ BLUE-crab book
I finally got The Commodore, in audio from my daughter's account. It won't count except for my series link because I am over half way through my Civil War book that came in earlier. It has been a while since I heard Jack and Stephen. I tried reading it, but it wasn't the same.
Cherie wrote: "Feels like a long way to go, for some reason. I'm planing to read To Say Nothing of the Dog for my challenge. I think Doomsday Book is just a slow read - not bad, just slow. I hear that the third and fourth books are very good.
Looks like at least three of us are going to reading To Say Nothing of the Dog! Congrats on your challenge progress!
I'm planning on reading Doomsday for the illness task because of the Bubonic Plague. To Say Nothing of the Dog is longish too. :)
@Janice - there is also a flu epidemic, so that fits too. Well, now you made me think. Until I read it, I would never have applied this book to that task. I didn't have it for time travel either, until all of the discussion about the second book, which I have now. I'm not sure that it is your kind of book, though. Do you have it in audio?
Curious. What makes you think it's not Janice's kind of book. I have it listed to for a task and I have quite similar tastes to Janice.
It was a 3.5 star book for me which means I liked it. I'd be surprised is either Sarah or Janice would rate it less based on what I know of their tastes. The only thing that made it less than 4 for me was that I thought it was a bit long drawn out in parts. Loved the story!
Janice, I am starting to doubt the book I have chosen for this task after we had a brief discussion about Doomsday Book:
Taurus – Jasper
- Jasper is a very healing stone. It is thought to promote healing during illness or hospitalization. Read a book where illness (mental, emotional or physical) is a major theme.
This is the book I thought I would read. The Promise of Stardust. All I have to go by is the story summary, but I am rethinking if what is being discussed is "illness".
Sarah wrote: "Curious. What makes you think it's not Janice's kind of book. I have it listed to for a task and I have quite similar tastes to Janice."Oh, just because it is long and slow, Sarah. I did not mean anything derogatory. I guess, if she made it through the other book we have been discussing, it is not true.
Janice wrote: "I'm planning on reading Doomsday for the illness task because of the Bubonic Plague. :)"...I thought you read The Prince of Tides for the illness task because of Tom's sister's mental illness.
OUT OF ORDERBadge 2, Book 1 of 24
Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Category: Element - Air
Task: Read a book with "Air" in the title.
Book Link: Air
★★★ read Jan 17th
How It Fits: Air is the title (#2 in the Akasha series).

Promise of Stardust sounds like it would be a very interesting read, certainly controversial. It's not really illness though, is it? The situation was because of an accident, so I would discount it.
You could read it for a blue cover if you haven't already got that one filled.
Cherie wrote: "Janice wrote: "I'm planning on reading Doomsday for the illness task because of the Bubonic Plague. :)"...I thought you read The Prince of Tides for the illness task because of Tom's..."
I started Prince of Tides in December, so it didn't qualify for this challenge.
Re the illness, yeah, I will find another book.I really don't want a mental health read, but that is all I see right now. It can wait. I know there are more books out there. I think I have a title in my TBR about the 1918 flu pandemic. I need to look in my non-fiction-to-read shelf.
I don't suppose turning into a werewolf or vampire could be considered an illness, huh?
Re Prince of Tides - seemed like last week. :o). Did you like it? Have you seen the movie?

When I say OUT OF ORDER I first thought it was a comment on the book content lol
Gave me a laugh at myself anyway Cherie ;-D
Cherie - have you read Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness for your illness task - not mental illness. - It is good. You may want to check it out.
When you said plague, I thought of Company of Liars (after Year of Wonder, and Doomsday). So could be an option?
The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness, and Recovery would work for illness too. Covers all types of illness (that affects the brain in some way). There are some accidents in there too.
Thanks for all of your suggestions, Ladies. Rusalka - I already read Doomsday and posted it for time travel. I did not know about the "sickness" in the story, until I read it. As for Company of Liars - I think I have had enough of 1348 for now.
I am pretty sure I own The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History. I think I bought it at a library sale. Now - I just have to find it.
I found one of my other owned books had a MC with cancer. I had slotted it for clouds on the cover. I have updated my listing, but it may change again, if I can find the flu book. I guess I haven't had enough of that. When I think of the 1918 pandemic, I always think of Edward, from Twilight.

I know, I was bouncing off that :)

Can't you "relocate" this book? So you could read another time travel...
(Until asking for a badge you could change the books's task, or not? Last challenge it was allowed ...)

I believe it's the same this year, Mariab. You can move things around until you report for a badge.

Really? I thought once I posted it, it was locked. Janice?
I would definitely change it, because I am reading To Say Nothing of the Dog now.
They're locked after you've requested your badge, so you can switch around until then. Just make sure you clearly identify your changes.I just posted a sick book for you. I thought it was on this thread. But obviously it wasn't.
Get Well Soon: History's Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them - non-fiction, on sale at Audible right now for $2.95.
Now I have to go find it and delete it.
Badge 1, Book 8 of 12 Zodiac Sign: Capricorn
Category: Superheros-Cannonball
Task: Read a book about the American Civil War or about the Napoleonic War.
Book Link: The Hidden Light of Northern Fires
★★★★★ read Jan 21st
How It Fits: This book is set during the Civil War and goes from 1860 to 1865.
This HF book is the author's debut novel. It was very well written and presented. It takes place mostly in New York, in a small town just south of Buffalo. The MC of the story is a woman named Mary, who becomes involved in the Underground rail way. It is the story of Mary and her family and other towns people of Town Line, New York and an escaped slave named Joe Bell, from Walnut Grove, Maryland.
Cherie wrote: "Janice - message 94 has been edited to change the book number for badge 1."That was a little confusing.
It might be easier if you post a removal just like you do report -
REMOVE:
Badge 1
Sign - Capricorn
Task - Stone Quartz
Link - Doomsday Book
And MOVE to:
Badge 2, book 2
Sign - Taurus
Task - Stone Jasper
Badge 1 now has 8 books.
Badge 2 now has 2 books.
Spell it all out for me instead of making me hunt back through prior messages. That's the price you have to pay for swapping. Hehehehe!
