Jayme | 4568 comments I know we can't read a book for the Monthly Challenge for the Year Long Challenge, but is the the Group Read Book also considered a monthly challenge?
Specifically can I read Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng which is the January Group Read selection for this challenge also (Leo - element fire - fire on the cover? Thanks

Sandra (sanlema) | 11295 comments Jayme, yes, the monthly read can count for the year long challenge. The only conflict is always challenge<->challenge. All the other combinations work.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11295 comments Ok, I deleted my other posts because I think I was confusing things.

Little Fires Everywhere, for Leo/fire says "exact word", so I don't think the plural "fires" work. But Janice is the one to rule that.

The other monthly read,Into the Water, works for Pisces/water.

Oh, that's right. I forgot about the exact word thing. Thanks for the clarification.

I can't answer for any other posts, but this is correct.

Jayme | 4568 comments But we can use it for having fire on the cover then (several houses are on fire)?
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

Doesn't seem to have a significant amount of fire on the cover to me. I couldn't tell there even was until I clicked on the image to go to the book page.

okey dokey... just trying all the angles :)

message 409: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments There's not a significant amount of fire on the cover, if it even is fire. The only reason we think it may be is because the title suggests it. I'd say that it's too ambiguous.

I forgot about the words "significant amount" Thanks, Janice.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Janice - for Picies/Siren, will you accept Valkyrie as an alternate word? I just realized that I have Valkyrie Rising by Ingrid Paulson in my Nook books library.

Sarah | 18550 comments Cherie wrote: "Hi Janice - for Picies/Siren, will you accept Valkyrie as an alternate word? I just realized that I have Valkyrie Rising by Ingrid Paulson in my Nook books library."

Pretty sure Valkyrie have nothing to do with water likes the others in the list.

message 413: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks, Sarah. I should have looked it up. Odin's Maiden. Wrong mythology. They all sound the same to me though.

Janice - forget I asked. :o(

message 414: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Haha, I didn't even realize they are all water-related until now. Makes sense though, given the sign the task belongs to.

message 415: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments You're restricted to the list of names specified in the task regardless of mythology.

Jayme | 4568 comments Hi Janice - Back to the "truck" on the cover question. Would this book work? The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion by Fannie Flagg You only see half of the red truck, so I wasn't sure.

message 417: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I can't really tell if it is a truck, so I'm going to say no. Sorry!

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I have put up the challenge widget for the 2018 annual challenge. It's on the Group home page. It's there for those of you who like to use it to track your numbers. You'll be able to add your goal tomorrow.

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments LOL! That is so true, Rusalka.

I rang in the British New Year at a local pub at 5:00 p.m. my time (midnight in the UK) I could start reading in another 2 hours. But I doubt that will happen. My bed is calling to me.

I just finished book one!

message 432: by Janice, Moderator (new)

I was borrowing the book from my sister. I leave tomorrow and didn't want to mail it back!

message 434: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments The Kremlin Letter by Noel Behn has a gun on the cover, and I am assuming it is metal. Can that count for the task with metal tool or weapon on cover even though we just see it in black?

message 435: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments That will work, Beth.

message 436: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Now that we have officially started, and books are already being completed, here is a reminder of what is required when reporting:

Each time you complete a book, you must report it in an individual message in your personal tracking thread. Do not combine books in a message. Each book gets it own. Report each book as follows:

1. Challenge Progress: Identify where you are in the challenge – Badge 1, book 1 (2, 3, 4, etc.)

2. Task – List Zodiac Sign and Category

3. Link to book read. If the cover is part of the task, link the cover of the edition you read as well.

4. If not obvious, state how the book fits the criteria.

5. Specifications required in the task. Some tasks require that you report specific thing. IE – a) The “twins” task is to read a book that has two different titles. You are required to link the alternative title. b) If a task requires that you read a book from a Listopia, you need to identify which page number it was on so that it can be verified.

message 437: by Cody (new)

Cody | 348 comments Thanks Janice, might it be worth setting this as a sticky? I found the links to my challenge really helpful :)

message 438: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments It is a sticky. It is message 2 of the official challenge thread.

Lisette (illusie) Can this book be used for water bearer? Red bucket near the fireplace.

Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy

message 445: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) I think there is fire behind the character on the cover, but is it a significant amount of fire?

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Maas

I would prefer something more prominent, but I will accept it.

I can't tell if that's fire or not. It could be, but it could also be the artist making a flourishing background. It needs to be obvious that it's fire. Sorry.

message 448: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) Thanks Janice.

message 449: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) I've found some other options for fire. Are any of those acceptable?

Bonfire by Krysten Ritter The Fire Mages (Brightmoon, #2) by Pauline M. Ross The Burning Sky (The Elemental Trilogy, #1) by Sherry Thomas

message 450: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments All three will work Lusie.
