I honestly don't know. I haven't read the book, and from I can see from the book blurb, reviews, and Wikipedia, it's more about a woman learning to love. It seems like the cholera epidemic is secondary.

Has someone in the group read the book, and can shed more light on whether or not illness is a major theme?

I've read it and wouldn't have thought to consider it for illness as a major theme. Besides I didn't care for it :-), better off hunting for another book!

message 365: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2112 comments I'm a bit unsure about the task "Read a book where the protagonist is a girl or young woman under the age of 20 and is unmarried". The explanation that I found for the word "protagonist" is "a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary". How should I interpret the task, what kind of books fit? I get the under 20 and unmarried part, but how should the protagonist aspect be visible?

message 366: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh oops, I thought it was just a fancy word for main character. I think one of the books I selected for this task fits the protagonist definition too.

message 367: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Pretty sure protagonist just means THE main character too.

In this context, it's definition number one. The *main* character. It's not a fancy word as such, it just differentiates between the character whose story you are following and other people who could be main characters whose story it is not. If that makes sense.

Eg if it was a story of my life, I would be the protagonist. Lexx could be counted as a main character, as he's always there, has been for many years, and pretty important (I guess :P). But it's my story.

Camilla | 2112 comments Rusalka wrote: "it just differentiates between the character you are following and other people who could be main characters who's story it is not."

Hmm, I think I might understand. E.g. if I choose Gone with the Wind for this task, Scarlett is the protagonist, since she's the one being "followed", and Rhett and Ashley are also main characters, but not protagonists, right?

message 372: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments So if a story follows the pov of more than 1 charactor do they all become protagonists?

message 373: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11295 comments Main character in Spanish is "protagonista" so I didn't give it a second thought. I agree with Rusalka about the definition. And Margo, at least in the way I understand it, there can be more than one protagonist.

message 374: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I guess it depends on the story Margo. I understand, like main character, the term is complicated :)

From my limited understanding of the story, I would say yes. Someone else may be able to enlighten us both.

message 376: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Dec 17, 2017 09:23AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Protagonist is the central character. One who is in opposition or conflict against the protagonist is the antagonist. Supporting characters may also be considered main characters. I would think if there is more than one main POV, they'd all be main characters. I'm not sure they'd all be called the protagonist.

As far as I understand it, Cathie, you can start with any month and read books in any order. I was planning on starting with whatever book/month I feel like reading at the time.

Since you have to complete one task from each sign until you have all twelve, I don't think it matters which one you initially choose.

So I'm going with the books that most appeal to me first.

message 381: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments You may read in any order. I've got Scorpio, Leo, and Cancer slotted for January.

message 382: by Cody (new)

Cody | 348 comments Almeta wrote: "Cathie wrote: Since you have to complete one task from each sign until you have all twelve

is this correct? I thought I could just read willy nilly but per 12 books there has to be one form each sign?

I must have completely misread this

message 383: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19315 comments My understanding, Cody, is that you need one book from each sign per 12 books for badges, but you can save books for later badges. So if, for example, you read two Scorpio books, you could use one for your first badge and put the other on a list to save and use for your second badge. You don't have to read in order, just have to eventually get to one of each sign for the badge.

thanks, I need to sure up my categories then !! more gophering for me this weekend

message 385: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments What Kristie said.

Main challenge is one book per zodiac sign.
Badge 2 is two books per zodiac sign.
Badge 3 is two books per zodiac sign.
Badge 4 is the remaining books (which will amount to 2 books per sign).

This task has a higher colour % quota.
I'm trying to fit it in somewhere.

message 390: by Amanda (last edited Dec 28, 2017 07:39AM) (new)

Amanda | 1811 comments I'm having the hardest time deciding how much is a "significant amount" of something. Is it having a lot of fire, or just fire that stands out? Will this work? Creed or Chaos? Why Christians Must Choose Either Dogma or Disaster (Or, Why It Really Does Matter What You Believe) by Dorothy L. Sayers

message 391: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19315 comments Amanda - I'll leave it to Janice whether she thinks the fire fits. (To me, it is hard to tell if it is fire or a sun setting behind the building.) I just wanted to pint out though, that that book is only 116 pages. Books need to be at least 175 pages to fit the challenge.

message 392: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Unfortunately the book doesn't qualify because of length.

I'm going to agree with Kristie's comments about the ambiguity of whether or not that is fire on the cover. When I say "significant amount", it should be obvious that it's fire. When you question what it is, best to move on to another choice.
