Kristie | 19314 comments Here's an example: Trouble in Mudbug (Ghost-in-Law, #1) by Jana Deleon . This one just cam to mind because I own it. Also, there's a truck in the driveway of this one: What's Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges and the MC drive a truck, if I recall correctlyl.

lol! Don't tell the truck lovers out there they're unusable. ;)

message 105: by Eliestal (new)

Eliestal | 255 comments As a heavy manga reader, I have a question about the lengh equivalence. The rule is:

5. Books may be any genre unless specified in a task. In the case of graphic novels or books consisting of a lot of pictures, the text must be equivalent to that of a 175-page book.

How many 175-page volume should I read to be equivalent to a 175-page book?

message 106: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Another question, I think I'm not clear on it because English is not my first language.

For the actor tasks:
"Option 2: If the book is adapted, you may read another book written by the same author. "

If the book is adapted, do you mean there was a movie first and then a book was written based on the movie? And in that case you can read another book by the same author? Or is it the same as Option 1, so if there's a movie based on a book, you can either read the book the movie was based on, or another book by that same author?

message 107: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Does Wolfsbane work for poison?

Poisioning from the aconitum plant can occur if it is ingested or handled without gloves. ... Aconitum is also known as monkshood and devil's helmet due to its resemblance to a drawn hood, and is known by some as wolfsbane, because its poison is so toxic that it was once used to kill wolves.

Thanks for re-asking that question Camilla. Things get a bit crazy and I miss things.

You may read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer because it is the book from which the adaptation was made. If you opt not to read the book it was based on, you can opt for the exact title of the movie, in this case "Tom Sawyer". Extraneous words are not allowed - even "the". Exact words are required - no plurals.

I found it easiest to click on the link to the movie page on Wikipedia to get that info. You may read the book it was adapted from or based on. Does that make sense? For Johnny Depp, I'm going to read The Club Dumas because the movie The Nineth Gate is loosely based on it.

message 110: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Janice, when it comes to the Superhero Rhino task, does the word villain have to be in the title or series name or are you meaning the actual name of a villain?

message 111: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Lori Z wrote: "I also have a question about genres. I've looked at a couple books where the required genre is listed like a sub-genre. For example, The Sea of Monsters where its listed as Fantasy>Mythology. Does that count?.."

As long as the specified genre is on the main book page - imbedded or sub-genre - it will be accepted.

message 112: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Janice, I stand in awe of your creativity and attention to detail in creating these challenges. I think I may have been focusing too hard on some of them, though. Last night I dreamed about this challenge (in the abstract, not the particular categories). It was a variation on the exam dream--you know, the dream where you have just learned you are expected to take an important test, or maybe a final exam, in a class you did not realize you were signed up for, and know nothing about, and the test is in an hour? Well, I dreamed about the year-long challenge, and as the dream went on, the tasks became more and more complicated. By the end I think I was trying to create a full wardrobe for a collection of paper dolls, or maybe real dolls.

Egads! Did you round up all the worms.

Be careful you don't start adding SUV's or crossovers to the mix. I want to see anything from a pickup truck to your big industrial trucks.

No SUV's or crossovers.

Egad - yes to Mudbug (in fact that's on my list). I'd say no, to the second, because it's tiny. It needs to be clear and obvious.

That one is going to be a tough call. I just don't want graphic novels and picture books listed at 175 pages, when there is very little text. If it's listed as 300+ pages, you're probably safe. If you aren't sure - don't consider it.

message 117: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Peggy wrote: "If the book is adapted, do you mean there was a movie first and then a book was written based on the movie..."

No, I mean that a movie is adapted from a pre-existing book. In that case, you can read the book the movie was adapted from, or another book by the author who wrote the book.

Using an earlier question - Jody Foster movie Tom Sawyer was adapted from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. You may read that book or another book written by Mark Twain.

If you are not reading an original book or book on which the movie was based, you may read a book that has the same title as the movie.

The word "Villain" has to be in the title, or in the series title.

Villain
Vicious from the series Villains

Just a thought, Janice. I know the truck on What's Eating Gilbert
Grape is small on the cover, but the other part of the task was "or the protagonist drives a truck." I'm assuming a pickup truck is ok? I was thinking that Gilbert Grape drives a truck.

message 127: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2112 comments I'm sure you love it that our questions just keep coming, right, Janice? We're all busy gophering.

I'm a bit unsure of what can be considered a significant amount of clouds. Do any of these work?
2024 by H. Berkeley Rourke
The Day After The Fourth by Garrett Cook
Outcasts Short Stories by Nick Wisseman by Nick Wisseman

I think a significant amount of water and fire is easier to estimate, but for some reason the clouds seem more difficult to me.

We'll go with the common conception of PNW as coastal Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

I didn't mean to! I actually, honestly, wasn't trying to be a pain. You've highlighted the issue again by using SUVs (at least I know what those are from American TV) and crossovers (no idea). English is the same wherever you go, right? Pffft.

But I think I have it for Aussies. "Truck" for this challenge means anything from a Ute to a Truck. But no 4 Wheel Drives.

Federico Andahazi is an awesome author, sadly many of his books aren't translated in English (like El secreto de los flamencos or El conquistador), another boolk in English (somewhat strange, burt vey good) is The Merciful Women

And one of my previous questions slipped through, I think it got snowed under by the trucks discussion ;-)

I am just wondering if I can use Cinder for the female under 20. She is female but is a cyborg.

Also, for clouds, do they have to be earth clouds. I was contemplating Fluency as an option which has clouds but in space. If that's even possible.

I think that's it for now.
