Lanelle | 4034 comments For those who are not science fiction fans, remember that time travel is considered science fiction. Sometimes those are easier to read than a more stereotypical science fiction story.

Agree with Lanelle. Some times the sub-genres are much more accessible to us non-Sci Fi readers, than what we think "Sci Fi" is. I cannot believe this was 5 years ago, but have a look at this challenge to get you thinking https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Not all books will be categorised as sci-fi, but gets you thinking outside the usual box. It's a massive genre, which i think there is something that appeals to everyone, you just may not have found it yet.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Good idea Lanelle! I do like time travel. They are not always listed as SF on the main page though, especially not the time travel books on my tbr. But I'll check :)

Thanks for the link Rus!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sarah/Rusalka - Oh, I cannot believe it was that long ago either. One of the funniest badges on my wall too! Hahaha. I was reading through the thread and see that I finally read some of the books mentioned - this year!! I think I read my first Steampunk for the challenge.

message 956: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That was before my time! I think I joined in August of that year.

message 957: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2091 comments I'm planning on reading Kindred for the stand alone SF book. Its been on my tbr shelf for a couple years and seemed like a good fit for this task.

I have this on my TBR list. I will be interested in your views. A few others in the group have read it already.

message 959: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Now why did he go and spoil it all by starting a sequel to Ready Player One? That book was perfect as a standalone. I can't conceive how there could be a sequel.

message 960: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2112 comments Janice wrote: "I can't conceive how there could be a sequel."

$$$

message 961: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments That would certainly be the motivator, Camilla. It wasn't enough that the book was a best seller and the movie a blockbuster. Gotta ruin it with a sequel.

Sorry, but I don't see a significant amount of clouds, just a couple of itty bitty, but happy, clouds.

there's a big one, but it is pale. That's ok. I will just live with having a book I can't use for the challenge.....

Jayme | 4568 comments Since we are on the subject of clouds... Do you think this book cover would work for clouds on cover? Archangel by Andrea Barrett

Are those clouds, or mist rising off the water? I can't tell what they are. Sorry.

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Rachel wrote: "Can I possibly use this Morning, Noon & Night by Sidney Sheldon for the Agate challenge (face in profile on cover)?"

It's not exactly a profile since the face is tilted forward, but I see that I allowed a similar face, so I will this time too.

message 969: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - I am reading The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary for the toppler and had picked it for my ZZ challenge book for Sean Penn. I thought the movie had already been released, but when I looked it up yesterday, the IMDB info said it was not going to be released until Nov 2018. Can I still count it for my challenge when I am finished with the book, even if the movie has not been released yet, or do I need to wait for the movie?

message 970: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments You'll have to wait until the movie is released. Sorry.

message 971: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments No problem, Janice. That is what I figured you would say. ;0).

message 972: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments Janice, I read His Majesty's Dragon for capricorn,
SUPERHERO: cannonball
Read a book about the American Civil War, or about the Napoleonic War.

I was just about to write it up when I wondered would it be acceptable . It is set during the napolionic wars but not in this universe lol

I will accept it because Bonaparte is a character (albeit absent). It's alternative history with dragons.

damn, that was my choice too! Thanks for asking about it Cherie - I didn't even realize that the movie wasn't out - I just picked it off the list. Now I know to wait until November to read it :)

It sounds like a good story, Sandra. I have not added it to my TBR list yet, but the reviews look pretty good.

message 985: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11295 comments @Cherie, I gave 3 stars to it. I was expecting more of it TBH. And is not that the writing is bad, but is not good either. Kristie liked it better than me, I saw.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

message 991: by Ansley (new)

Ansley (thatonedude1087) | 20 comments Hey, so I'm new to goodreads and I don't really know many things on here. So, when you say to report your book in a individual message in your personal tracking thread, I have no idea how to do that or what that means. Sorry for bothering you, but could you explain please.

Sorry again, and thank you.

message 992: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11295 comments Ok, I will try to explain everything, but ask if you don't understand what I am saying. I usually get messy.

Each person participating in this challenge has to do her/his own thread to track and organize their reading. The way you do your own thread is the following:
-Go to this folder: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
-Click in the "new topic" link (upper right corner, above the "last activity" title)
-Chose a title for your thread, and write it in the "topic: box.
-When you write and post the first comment the thread will actually start existing.
-Use the thread to report each book you read toward the challenge. Also you can use it for planning, brain storming, or whatever is useful for you.
-You can take a look at other people's threads in that folder to have an idea of what we are doing.

In the main thread of the Challenge you will find the tips for how to report each book in your thread.
When you have complete the challenge you will need to use the "Reporting" thread (also in the folder) to let Janice know you are done and what you read.

All of this will make more sense once you take a look at the different threads there.

Yes, that book will work for that task. Welcome to YLTO and to the challenge. It looks like Sandra has given you good instructions on how to set up your personal thread.

Please read the official Year Long Challenge post - here . This will explain all the rules and how to report.
