Claire | 332 comments Sorry if it has been asked, but do the books read this year count as I just started, but allready read a lot before:-)?

message 702: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Claire, you can only use the books you start reading as of today. Nothing you read before.

Good thing it's only february! :)

message 703: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Janice, for the Virgo - Maiden task I'm reading a book in which the MC is 17/18 years old. But, she's cursed to look like an old lady for a big part of the book. Can I still use it?

No problem. Just thought I’d ask :-)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Cody, so true! We all try to be flexible with the rules ;-) And also try to make sure we don't accidentally cheat. And so many questions you wouldn't even have thought of asking, but the books are just written that way!

Love this question!

Just sayin: I saw someone has used a title in another language (which differs from its literal translation) for the Gemini task

message 709: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments I hope Janice doesn’t have a day job where she has to answer a lot of questions and make decisions all day. It would be exhausting. She might start thinking she is the only smart person alive. :)

I answer questions all day long so when hubby asks me what is for dinner, I glare at him. I don’t want to make another decision! Lol

I've definitely been in that position before. I've actually told my husband, "We are not having that conversation now. I don't want to make any more decisions." Or, sometimes it's, "I can't think anymore." lol

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Kristie wrote: "Janice, sorry if this has been asked before, but for books with more than 1 title, what is the ruling on translations? For example Wonder is also titled La lección de August (transl..."

It does translate to something completely different, doesn't it? I can't remember what was decided. I think if it was a direct translation, it would be considered. But the book was published as "Wonder", and also as (if translated directly to English) The Lesson in August. So I would count them as two different titles.

You couldn't just use that for your August in title task, and make my life easier? LOL!

Yeah, I figure it's ok because it doesn't translate to the same title. I just wanted to confirm.

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Claire wrote: "Sorry if it has been asked, but do the books read this year count as I just started, but allready read a lot before:-)?"

Further to Peggy's response, the rules do state that you count books from the time you start. So if you post your thread today, your challenge starts Feb 14th, and books you read prior to that date don't count.

If we allowed books from January 1st onwards, it would be like picking ripe apples that have fallen from the tree instead of getting on the ladder and plucking them from the tree.

message 715: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19316 comments Thanks, Janice. :) I would use it for August, except I read the one titled, "Wonder". lol

LOL! She's 17/18 regardless of the curse. You can use it.

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Cody wrote: "I love the questions that are asked here :) the group is so creaive :) "

Some people call it creative. Others might call it bending the rules. LOL!

We should have a thread just for these wild questions:

Is a turban a hat?
Does a bathtub count as a water-bearing vessel?
She was cursed to look like a granny, but she's really 17/18. Honest!

When people ask me, "Can I ask you a question?" I respond, "You may, but do I have an answer?" And if I don't, I can do a good job of fudging.

message 719: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19316 comments We've definitely had some interesting questions recently, Janice!

When they ask me that, Janice, I usually tell them that I can probably give them an answer, but if I cannot, I can usually give them the name of someone who can. In my group, if someone cannot answer a question (or doesn't want to take the time to explain) - they usually tell the person asking to come and ask ME!

I feel these are all legitimate questions.

Mainly coz I ask most of them lol!

message 726: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Come to think of it, you do ask your fair share of the zany questions, Rusalka. The turban/hat one was yours.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I had the best time searching the book lists for Aquarius, Symbol-Water-bearer books (urn, jug). A few that I wanted to read were too short.

I found this one Fun Things to Do with Milk Jugs Fun Things to Do with Milk Jugs by Marne Ventura Guess who in this group marked it as, "want to read" (view spoiler)

I love this one! #1 the Bug in the Jug Wants a Hug A Short Vowel Sounds Book by Brian P. Cleary #1 the Bug in the Jug Wants a Hug: A Short Vowel Sounds Book. I might have to see about buying it for my youngest grandson.

Anyone have dog breed called a Jug?
It is a cross between a Jack Russell and a Pug. Here is a book for you. Jugs & Bottles by Nelson O. Ottenhausen Jugs & Bottles.

Sorry, Beth. Yes, I knew it was not for the Yearly challenge. (It looked blue to me, but was not my call.) ;o)

message 734: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments Sorry to be the 20th person to ask if this is enough cloud on the cover, but Is this enough cloud on the cover? Dog on It (A Chet and Bernie Mystery #1) by Spencer Quinn

message 735: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Sorry, but there's more dog and driver on the cover than clouds.

Vicki | 1538 comments Janice wrote: "Sorry, but there's more dog and driver on the cover than clouds."

That's OK, I enjoyed it so much I don't even mind that it doesn't fit into the challenge anywhere.

message 737: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just finished reading Alice both of the main characters had been in a mental hospital and suffered with mental health issues. Would you say this would work for Taurus- Jasper - where illness (mental, emotional or physical) is a major theme. Also, for the Gemini - Agate - face in profile - does it have to be a human face? Can it be a rabbit face? I'm thinking Alice again. If not, then I guess it would work for Aquarius - Turquoise - magic as a major theme. I'm desperate to fit it in somewhere.

Have you already filled your Horror spot? I used it for Turquoise -Magic.

message 739: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I don't personally class it as horror. I'd rather read a book which fit the task better. Good to know you used it for the magic task.

Jannene | 3124 comments Sarah wrote: "I don't personally class it as horror. I'd rather read a book which fit the task better. Good to know you used it for the magic task."

I looked the book up and it is classified under horror.

message 741: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I know it is classed as horror but i don't agree and i'd rather pick an actual horror book (in my eyes) for that task (and i own plenty).

I'm on the fence about mental illness. Unless (view spoiler)

I didn't even consider animal profiles when I designed that task, so no to that one.

I think it would work best for "magic" theme.

I agree with you about the horror genre. It does fit the criteria for the task, in that "horror" is listed on the main book page. I won't be shelving it as such because it seems to fit dystopia more than horror in my opinion. Ah, it's one of those blurry lines.

message 745: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11295 comments Question: In Winter Garden Anya is 81 years old. Although she spends a good part of the book talking about her youth, most of the book is set in the present time. She is not the only MC. There are 3 MCs, Anya and her two daughter (they are trying to recover their relationship). Janice do you think this still fits the task "MC over 60 years old"?

Thank you

message 749: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Feb 19, 2018 06:13PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I'm afraid not, Marie Claude. It's an apple painted as the atlas, not a planet. It's a tricky cover.
