I think someone else already read it, but I do not remember who.

Ann (ann7258) | 334 comments This may be a REALLY dumb question but here goes anyway:
For Saggistarius symbol, Native American culture....would Canadian First Nations culture qualify...? I mean, North America was the home for both Native Americans and the First Nations of Canada long before the United States of America and Canada were ever settled as countries.

Looking for a ruling here...

Yes, you may read plays.

Canada and US make up North America. So the term "Native American" encompasses First Nations from both countries.

Kristie | 19316 comments Janice - Would Sand by Hugh Howey be considered a standalone for science fiction? Technically, he released it in 5 parts, but it's all part of the same story. I think the one I have is called sand omnibus, but the first book I linked is the only one that comes up when I use the "add a book" feature. It's the same one.

Gilead could work for Leo/Kraven as superhero/read a book with MC over 60 years old. The MC is 76 years old when he's telling this story, a very long letter to his 7-year-old son.

message 658: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks for the post about Gilead, TJ. I can remove a book that I don't own and fit another in now! I think I was going to use it for the sword on the cover but I have multiple books with weapons. I even noted that I could use The Dinner for tool/weapon- there is a knife and fork on the cover and Janice has already allowed a spoon as a tool.

Epistolary also.

I think this would be the exception to the rule - where sections of the book were released individually and then as an omnibus. This seems to be Hugh Howey's MO. So, yes, you may read the omnibus as a standalone.

Does La Belle Sauvage (The Book of Dust, #1) by Philip Pullman qualify? I don't know how you define "a significant amont" ;-p

Dom and I have it for Capricorn - Cannonball. The cannon was first invented in China as early as the 12th century. For this task, you must pick your battle – land or sea. Read a book about the American Civil War, or about the Napoleonic War.

Yes, it qualifies. Significant amount is kind of relevant isn't it? If you saw one small cloud in the sky, would you say it was a cloudy day out? Not likely. But if there were several clouds with a little blue peeking out, you'd say it was a cloudy day. Similarily, if the cover shows around 40+ percent in clouds, I'd call that significant.

Rhino’s alignment is “bad”. Read a book with Villain in the title. Series titles are included for this task.

Does that mean the word Villain?

Hi Sunshine (that makes me smile). Yes, it means the actual word, "villain" has to be in the title of the book you choose. For example, I am going to read Villain: A Novel.
I think plurals (with an "s" is okay), so If We Were Villains would be okay, and if the word were in a book in a series, it would be okay, like Vicious because this is the first book in the Villains series.
More books:
Heroes and Villains
Villains United
And Be a Villain
Villains by Necessity
V is for Villain
Saints and Villains

Yes, "Villain" is the word you're looking for. Cherie has provided you with a nice list of choices. I'm going to read If We Were Villains.

Sorry, but it has to be "air" on it's own and not embedded in another word.

Welcome to the challenge Isaura.

Jayme | 4568 comments Hi Janice - for Leo - Salmon we are to read a book that is set in the Pacific Northwest (coastal Oregon, Washington, British Columbia). Could a book set in Alaska also work? There are many delicious salmon in Alaska :)

message 683: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments There may be delicious salmon there (have tasted it first hand fresh out of the ocean), however, Alaska is not considered part of the PNW.

message 684: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments Janice, for Taurus, stone/jasper/ illness (mental, emotional, physical) is a theme, will you accept a life-altering traumatic brain injury?

The Housekeeper and the Professor

message 685: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments I believe I made a ruling on a similar book. Because his condition was a result of a traumatic injury, it falls outside of "illness". I know it's a fine line, but I wanted more illness related stories than accidents.

message 686: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments No problem, Janice. I have others that fit better, but I just read this for the toppler and thought it might fit.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Janice - I am reading this for a toppler book. Is it okay for Water on the cover. It is a lake in Norway. The Water's Edge The Water's Edge (Inspector Konrad Sejer, #8) by Karin Fossum .

It's actually mist on the cover, and not water. It's more implied. Can you not use it for Pisces "water in title"? Too late for that suggestion.

My initial reaction was no. But I plugged it into TinEye and it reads 74.9%, so you're good to go.

message 695: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Janice, so with 'exact word' something like 'water's' is allowed? I had in my head it wasn't, but I do have a fitting book if it is.

message 696: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments No worries, Janice. The mist was on a lake but I get it - you want to SEE water. I already used the Water in the title slot but I can recommended it for anyone that needs a title for that task. I can use it for the month of September. My copy had 221 pages and from page 1 through page 139 it was September. It might fit the Lake/River task too. The crime scenes happened in a forrest next to Lake Linde, somewhere in Norway.

Yes. It looks like 75% of the cover is clouds.

message 699: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19316 comments Janice, sorry if this has been asked before, but for books with more than 1 title, what is the ruling on translations? For example Wonder is also titled La lección de August (translation - The Lesson of August), but that is the title translation from another language. I haven't seen it titled The Lesson of August in English.

message 700: by Lisette (new)
