Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Cody, I think you can do that, but only if you read all of Oathbringer in 2018. If you started it in 2017 you can't, no matter that you have the number of pages of a regular book still left to read.

message 602: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments It took me 7 months to read a book for last years challenge, so it should be fine. But ONLY if you read the entirety of the book between 1 Jan 2018 and 31 Dec 2018.

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments What Peggy and Rusalka said. :)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Janice, for the gemini-twin task, is it also restricted to main title or can the difference also be in the subtitle?

I'm referring to Lost on Planet China: The Strange and True Story of One Man's Attempt to Understand the World's Most Mystifying Nation, or How He Became Comfortable Eating Live Squid aka Lost on Planet China: Or How I Learned to Love Live Squid

If not I hope there's a challenge for books with long titles coming up soon ;-)

Sorry, Peggy. Sub-titles don't count.

I am intrigued though.

Cody | 348 comments I wasn't overly keen on oathbringer, I just was hoping I might slip it past :P I read the vast majority of the 900 pages in 17 :(

Thanks though guys :)

Margo | 11668 comments Janice, i just started Sealskin for my scotish read. It is about Selkie and the start really drew me in.

Question: will this qualify for The pieces, siren task. Selkie are not exactly mermaids but are similar scotch/ irish mythology?

Pretty sure it has to be in the title anyway so it wouldn't work.

Oh you're right! Brain overload - sorry ;-)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Going off our buddy read conversations, I have The Earthsea Quartet physically which has A Wizard of Earthsea inside.

I can work out page numbers easily, but how would you like us to handle anthologies like this for covers, Janice?

P.S. Sorry if you have already answered this

message 616: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Similar question from me. I wrote in my own thread about Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson , and that to my surprise my ebook has this cover: Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson which I could use for the aquarius - waterbearer task.

But something weird is happening. When I open my ebook, that cups cover is the only one I have, so the only cover that is actually *in* the ebook. But when I turn on my ereader, and I see the main page where it shows which books I'm reading with thumbnail covers, it shows the other cover! Which one should I use?

message 617: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm glad someone has asked the question about books containing multiple books. I was wondering about some of the Riyria books I have and how to fit them in.

Are you planning on reading only the one books in the anthology for the challenge, or the entire thing?

We've always said that you have to go with the edition you read, so you'd need to use that cover in its entirety, even if you read just the one book from it.

Will there be enough pages for Wizard? I know in the paperback edition, there's 183 pages. If it's not, you may need to read the entire anthology.

Which is the cover on the homepage of your ebook reader? I'd go with that one.

When it's an anthology of short stories, you'd need to read the whole book. But, when it's an anthology comprising of full novels you may read just the one, providing it meets the page length. You may need to calculate that manually.

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Mikaleigh wrote: "Hi I was wondering if I can use Caraval for the Virgo Maiden challenge."

Gauging from the book blurb, it sounds like she would be. I'm going to give it a conditional "yes". Have any of your friends read it, and can they verifiy that Scarlett is under 20 and unmarried for the entire book?

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Janice wrote: "Which is the cover on the homepage of your ebook reader? I'd go with that one."

It's Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson .

Okay, I'm going to change this back to my original plan. I'm actually glad about it, at least now I'm back to all reading for Badge 1 instead of mixing it up.

message 623: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I have just started Kin for 2018 release. I have it ahead of schedule. GR only has the kindle version listed at present with no page count. According to Amazon, the kindle version is 352 pages and the hardcover version is 320 pages. Is it ok to read this? Just wanted to check as I can't base it on GR hardback for page count.

I was only going to read one. Message received for the cover.

And I'll have to check the pages for Wizard, but I have a few of these (True Blood Omnibus, World of Psmith Omnibus, Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet / Perelandra / That Hideous Strength, etc) so thought it would be worth asking.

Sounds like it's not just me, so thanks for the ruling!

That's a great approach! Have you already got a black cover book? You could definitely use it for that.

I have it to read also.

message 634: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19316 comments Rebecca - The monthly read books can be used for the yearly challenge. You just can't use books for the monthly challenge for the yearly challenge. So, only one challenge. Cinder can be used for the zodiac challenge.

Also, books in a series are fine, unless the task specifies that it has to be a standalone.

message 635: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Rebecca wrote: "Quick two questions if you don't mind. I noticed the February read along book is Cinder. I have that on my Zodiac challenge. Does it count if it's read in a different month? I know in the rules it ..."

It's just the two challenges (monthly and annual) that prohibit "double dipping". You may certainly read Cinder for the February group read and count it towards your zodiac challenge. I don't know what you mean when you say "read it in a different month".

And yes, you may read books that are in a series. In fact, one of the members is able to slot several books in a series into the zodiac challenge and hopes to complete the series that way.

message 636: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Super! You're good to read Cinder for the group read and count it towards a task in the annual challenge. :)

message 640: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments For the profile of a face task, could i read Planetfall (Planetfall #1) by Emma Newman ? It's a face and it's in profile but it's made up of something other than an actual face.

Janice (jamasc) | 60069 comments Amanda wrote: "Does Dying to Read (The Cate Kinkaid Files, #1) by Lorena McCourtney work for water-bearer?"

Yes, it works. That water-bearer should be fired though. It's tipping out its contents.

It's all good, Sarah. I accepted one for The Good People by Hannah Kent which had a profile constructed in leaves.

No to Gilead. TinEye reads the cover as Iceberg Green (90%). It's looks blue to me.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11295 comments It might fit somewhere else, Elena. I think the main character is over 60 years old. I can't remember his age.
