SOLVED. Specific scary short story (1990s) where a boy suspects his mother is an imposter & has to rescue his real mom. [s]

I'm looking for a specific short story that was part of an anthology of scary/spooky stories I read as a teen back in the early 1990s. The title was something like "Black and White" but not exactly. It was about a school-age boy who, on his birthday, somehow went into another world after visiting the dentist. In this alternate world, his mother was not his mother, but an evil imposter. He learned his real mother was being held captive in a courtyard (graveyard?) behind the dentist office and he had to rescue her somehow. Specific details: An eclipse, a solar system painted on the ceiling of the dentist's office, and a graveyard where the stones looked like chess pieces (hence the title).

I recently watched the movie "Mirror Mask" and some aspects of the film reminded me of this story. I have been trying to find it ever since without any luck. If anyone can help, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you :)

p.p.s. I recall another story in the anthology was about a girl who used a pair of magic gloves to get revenge on her enemies.

YES!!! This is it!! (I recognize the cover now that I see it)

I have placed a hold on it from my local library system and am excited to see if the story (the whole book, really) is as strange as I remember.
