I don't know why, but I was sure you had already read C&P.

No..dely. This is my first Dostoyevsky. I had started the Idiot last year but didn't continue with it due to many reasons.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments We had Heidi as our text book in 5th grade and I fell in love with it and our English teacher who became a mentor for me in those growing years. I don't think my mother preserved that copy of Heidi (unfortunate for me) as it was full of explanations and stuff. But in the purging that took place when we shifted from Pune to Ahmedabad, it was gone. However, my memories of the book, our class and the teacher are still intact. A couple of years back I got in touch with her (my teacher's) daughter and relived some of those memories.

Loved your memory of the book and the love of it that poured through your narration, even if it was through stealing it. I think it is these memories that make a book special and it lingers long, sometimes even after our memories of the story are vague remnants.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments CnP was my first by D as well and I fell in love with it and him through this very book. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that this journey is just the beginning of a very long love affair with D. :)

Thanks for sharing your Heidi story , Sri. Some books are priceless indeed.

And I remembered later thst my first Dostoyevsky was White night which I read as a part of the weekend challenge, though this is my first full fledged novel by him.

BOOK BINGO CARD 3
CLASSIC PUBLISHED BEFORE 1920 - completed
4 plus stars...
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Had heard Dosto being praised ad nauseum by my friends, esp. Sri , Kru and Girish. And finally Kru prevailed upon me to consider it sooner, rather than later. Was waiting for an opportunity when the Bingo card called out that I read a classic before 1920. Hence started, and the richer for having read it.

Found it very interesting, but was dark and gloomy, and though I liked it lots, it isn;t a happy kind of like. Moreover, it is an angry kind of like... if what I say makes sense.

Have not yet coherently reviewed this story of a gloomy young man who murders a wicked money lender elderly lady, and along with her has to murder her innocent, mentally retarded sister. He lives with the burden of the unneccessary crime, as he has not benefited from it monitorily , and what follows is a dark tale of human misery.
Ending was almost what I expected.

Tomorrow 7 PM bingo card no. 2 will be announced. Eagerly awaiting the book destined for me.

Inga by Poile Sengupta In the meanwhile, have chosen a light read, which I saw highly recommended in Senior Reading Raccoons, a facebook book group.
The first 5% seems my kind of read, and I am mowing through pages.

A new title, an unknown author.

Lolss... I have other books to ask her about once she is done with her bingo books ;) don't think she'll be very restless, we bookworms have tendency of distracted by other books. ;)

message 167: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments Of course we do. But knowing her, she will still want the number as soon as she finishes this one! And that's what I love about her! :D

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

what is this duology? ( dialogue).
At 49 th page of foundation... And am left wondering about the hype. The book is only 250 pages but the letters are smaller than ants and the net worth will be 500 pages .

Not liking the futuristic galaxy with some 500 million planted all occupied by humans trying to propagate their race.

Lots of strife and confusion .

But I liked the beginning pages a lot where intergalactic travel was being described.

Anyway will persevere with it as I unfortunately bought a physical copy ( known pasina karke kamaya hai... et al )

message 169: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 1859 comments We are the best when it comes to dialogue! :P

Ahh i hate books with small prints. Gives me a headache! Hoped it would be good as I have seen a lot of great reviews and ratings for it. Maybe someday later when I am in a mood for sci-fi I shall read it.

oh! that's sad... i hate it when i end up not liking universally loved books. :/:\

you have two weeks to start and finish another book.. windup girl? *hint*;)

the only sci-fi that i have read and loved is remembrance of earth's past. that is just too good. some things went above my head but what i understood was top notch.

Hi M and Sri , I really contemplated changing books, but then thought that I cannot concede defeat so soon and hence I am persevering. I threw my hard copy as far as I can(mentally), and am now reading on iPad which has somewhat enhanced the story. Now at 30% and am confident that I will be able to complete it. As of now, guessing that it would be 3 star material, but let us see how the book fares with me.

Sense of an ending-
a book which I somehow delayed reading for years together despite glowing review from most friends.

Yesterday night it called out to me and blasted me properly. Within 10 min I searched it out and started reading on iPad, too impatient to loaf it on kindle.
After an ambiguous start, the story is asserting itself, and am waiting for the sense the ending will bring.

Am uptodate in my bingo challenges, finishing books promptly.
Started June Readathon, but a very slow start - only 137 pages in past couple of days.. but am hopeful.
Dont feel like daily updating this thread... I intend to, but somehow I dont get time or inclination to sit with a laptop, or in front of the desktop, and the mobile app is a hassle.

Hence decided that I wont strive for a complete or updated journal. I will just post here as and when I wish to...

Taking this resolve, I feel very light, almost as light as a feather (#just-joking.)

Finished my first Readathon book... a lustrelwss offering by Stephanie Meyer coated in a sugary blurb and a title which acted as a bait to lure in gullible like me.

But it is done and dusted .

now odd to select my second readathon book

Arrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

This is the most ill kempt thread ever. I wish there was a direct connection from my brain to this thread. As I think about my books it would update the thoughts here... (after censoring any scary ones, of course. )

But am not going to be a slave to my thread.

Am NOT going to update the first few messages started in a new year high...

Am just going to come here as and when I want to ...

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Have completed 56 books so far, not bad considering I had a much lower expectation.

Readathon challenge going on as I expected it to...

There are so many books in my radar, only thing lacking is time to read all.

My current books are going well..

The Wife by Alafair Burke - a very taut police procedural. Slightly formulaic, none the less quite readable.

Hard boiled wonderland and ......... by Murakami. : one of the most weird books ever. But I love Murakami style of weirdness.

Started Turtles all teh way down as audio - hope this one goes way up in my estimation, as on the whole, to me, John Green is a disappointing author.

I therefore stopped creating a thread to update books read. I had plans to read this, read that, clear the back log and not buy any book this year. I will go to hell for not sticking to my resolution. And the Kindle is spoiling me. Just because there is no need for a physical space I keep buying books therein!!! Argh
