two more books read
Broken Harbour - my first book by Tana French. A disappointment. BRd with Manju and Jaya. Jaya didnt like it too. Manju is still reading it...

had great hopes for the Dublin murder squad series.... now this will go down in my TBR list. Not in a mood to meet with the squad in near future.

The first half was great. Harping upon the subject of holes in the wall, and peculiar long drawn explanations and characterisations killed my interest in the book. The end was horrible. Unbelievable.

Book 16

Blood Test - an impulse read, moreover a comfort read which went bad.
I love Alex Delaware series by Jonathan Kellerman. I have read many books of this series out of order.
Picked up this one as a palate cleanser in between serious/boring reads.
As in the previous book, the beginning looked good, but the plot started tumbling down in the middle itself, dragged on to the end just because it was Kellerman.
A book I could have avoided, but for my impulse.

Am nowadays rediscovering the charm of classics.
David Copperfield - at 620 pages, two thirds covered. A quaint story of a poor rich boy who faces the turns of fortune with stoicism. Though I enjoy reading the way it is written, the story doesn't impact me as I find the behaviors very odd... of course, I cant equate 19th century norms with 21s century ones.

Also started the collected stories of SK Pottekad in malayalam - one of my favorite childhood authors. It is a massive tome of nearly 1600 pages in two volumes. Am reading a couple of stories a day. So I may take months to finish this one, but finish I will.

Parikhit | 3999 comments Yay classics :) Tell me Col., are you reading the ebooks for classics. I recently graduated to a Kindle and I was under the impression that the classics will be free. I seldom see any free classics!

Hi Parikhit
Am reading the Penguin paperback. The very one in my current reads.

Congrstularions on your Kindle. Amazon does have free classics... there are many versions of kindle books of the same classics- one of those is invariably free.
And if you join kindle unlimited you get to choose from many books. sometimes they give a one month free trial of KU . I availed it a couple of months ago, but didn't continue with the paid version.

Book 17 - David Copperfield - finishes this in fits and starts , taking 3 months to read. But I have the satisfaction of finally having read the real thing (vs an abridged version in childhood). The story was sort of formulaic 19th century stuff, couldn't identify or empathize with situations, but I liked character sketches, though sometimes these were extremes.

David is the quintessential good guy, and I liked him. Dora , initially an object of ridicule grew upon Me, and by the end I positively liked her.
Mr. Peggoty's devotion to his niece would be mistaken for paedophilia nowadays . Emily, the niece appeared to be a dramatic damsel who spoilt her life unnecessarily. Hated Jack, his mother and Rosa... sympathised with Ham, Peggoty and David's aunt.
And found all the minor characters interesting.
Sickens is one of my favourite classics author. Will peruse more of his unabridged works.

Am currently reading Salems lot - a vampire fiction by King. Enjoying vintage King. At page 160...

Also started Saakshi by S L Bhyrappa ... and am positive that this book will make me ruminate and chew cud....and am too lazy foe even intellectual.ezercise , and am welcoming as well as repulsing the task.

Saakshi is a BR with Gorab. Sri too has promised to join in- so I am sure a lively discussion will ensue.

Completed 18 books. A slow start to the year, which has all signs of setting the pace for the coming months.

Currently reading
1. Salem's lot - love it
2. Discovery of Wtiches - love it-
3. We Have Always Lived in the Castle- one of the weirdest female protagonist in recent years. Going to be my one strech finish book in many months.
4. S K Pottekkad short stories in malayalam - lazing over this one. will have to pick up speed.

This year, though less reading time, quality of books I am reading is quite satisfactory.

And I see that I have to update my challenges some day.. (perhaps at a time when I am relatively free)

Finished the death of Ivan ilych just because I am a persnickety grouchy insane who doesn’t like being challenged. 🚴🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️
But am glad I did as it delivered short power packed punch to the soul , making me contemplate upon the rat race called life.
poor Ivan, poor multitudes who toil on a day to day basis chasing the mirage of the pinnacle of success.

Well, well,
I seem to have completed 23 books.. and am content as I expected to read much less, especially in the last few days.
Challenges are all going along at snail's pace..
Reading what I like, and liking what I read...
Doing loads of BRs..
WHat more can I ask for.
Past one month resstrained myself only to ONE impulse order.. that too പതിതപങ്കജം Pathitha Pankajam by Thakazhi. Hadnt heard of the book, but it was being sold by Amazon Prime for 47 rupees... hence jumped at the opportunity.
A very thin book... but no complaints..
T S Pillai is a formidable writer. And I usually love his books.

Nowadays I gaze at my unread physical books and get guilty pangs ... 1. because I keep on adding to the pile
2. despite knowing I have enough books to last me a lifetime and more I pick up ebooks...

hope some day, all my books will be read by someone at least

all said .
Am not willing to part from them as long as I live. 🙂

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3765 comments Mod
well, nowadays you seem to be clearing them off more often than adding them up. All your books will be read by you :)
on second thoughts, impossible!! reading them will urge you to increase the pile substantially. it's a never ending game.
wish you enjoy stalking and chalking them off :)

Kavitha Sivakumar | 626 comments Syl, what is the DNA discrepancies you mentioned in Discovery of Witches review? I also get irritated when the known facts are twisted too much in the name of fiction. Just curious to know facts from you. thanks!

message 139: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
Looking at DNA sequences they are sort of telling everything about a person- like what magical abilities they will have , what their nature will be etc..
whereas DNA and mitochondrial elements are used only to determine parentage and certain known genetic disorders whose genes are defective.
One can't predict everything about an individual just by DNA analysis
Perhaps the author has taken poetic liberty , still it rankled me.

Have joined a couple of interesting challenges.
The first one called Book Bingo begins tomorrow 7 PM
I will try to update the cards called and the genres to be read and my progress in the thread.

message 142: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
BINGO started today
The card called out was 3
this being Classic published before 1920.
I chose Hard Times
reasons being
1. Relatively small book at 300 odd pages
2. Like Dickens
3. Haven't read it yet
4. Bought the beautiful penguin paperback for just 100.rupees at a flipkart loot lo sale a couple of weeks ago.
At 20 pages it is enticing .

message 143: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
well.... Hard times was going on smoothly .. the engaging sarcastic scathing lines of Dickens were a treat to read... completed 40 pages in an hour- a bit slow as I was forever reading and 're reading sentences just for the joy of.it.
Suddenly at bedtime I remembered thst I wanted to read Crime and Punishmnet - either for this or.dpe.thr translated works category ( whichever comes first)- other factors advocating the book were had Key liked it lots and heavily recommended it to me, and it for chosen as BOTM in Indian Readers.

So here am I, early morning scramble to find an apt translation ( Peave and Kholosky - Am sure the names are incorrect) and then loading it to kindle. Could read only a few pages ..

as of now Hard times is more toothsome.. but I will wait and watch.

The recommendation and adulation of a whole lot of close friends is lifting up Dosto onto a high pedestal.

Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Heidi - or how I re instated myself as a book thief

I was about 8 or so, and was on a short visit to my maternal aunt;s place in South Kerala. As my usual norm whenever I visit someone, I made a beeline to the bookshelf and started my hunt for a book to while away the time while grownups were yakkety yakketing (though I used to keep a small ear keenly focussed towards their talk). A thickish book with a beautiful cover showing a girl my age with a lamb nearby and bright green mountains and bright blue sky in the background caught my attention. I eased it out from the shelf and turned a page.. the front leaf was inscribed with a congratulatory message for being first in some educational activity or the other.
I took it to my bed to pursue in leisure, and fell in love with the story... I loved the high mountains, the crazy great unlce, and the leisurly life.
Hours flew past and my short visit was at an end, though Heidi wasnt. So I smuggled it in into my parent's luggage, with a beating heart and a guilty face which avoided eye contact with the house mates. Everything went on smoothly. As soon as I reached my home in Calicut, I carried away the book to safety and established it in my bookshelf. NExt few days/months I used to admire it , pass my fingers over the inscription, and also read it. I would have read it perhaps a dozen times.
Now fast forward a few years. I am a late teen, my cousin (who would or wouldn't have noticed the absconded Heidi) was a young adult about to be married, and she visited us for a few days. It was her turn to rummage my shelves (considerably swollen by then with truthfully acquired books). I had forgotten about Heidi... and fate decided upon an evil trick. Even today I feel that the book tumbled into the true owners' hands from the shelf. She looked at it, smiled fondly, and said... Why, I have the same copy at home!,
I was very uncomfortable. Then the inevitable happened. She carelessly turned a page to encounter her own name and the message from school. She said with wonder that she never remembered lending it to me... and scolded me for not returning it after reading.
To this day, I dont know whether she graciously saved me from a sticky situation. And now it is too late to ask, as decades have passed.
Hope she has forgotten Heidi again.

Amen...

It was a lurid detective book in malayalam. not suitable foe a 11 year old.. which I was. I have mentioned the episode somewhere inny precious reading logs..
in a nutshell... I saw the book in the shelf, my aunt told me it is not foe children ( she shouldn't have. she doesn't know children despite having had 4🤑). I sneaked back into the room took it and hid it on my body underneath my slip supported by the elastic of my skirt ... was uncomfortable but I endured. While leaving she gave me a tight hug and then...
chaos occurred.

Bingo update ... 26% of crime and punishment. Am eager to know where the story will take me. Crime has been committed ... And punishment is awaited.
will the right person be caught ? Or will there be any scapegoat?
what happens to the protagonist next?

all these questions bumbling like busy bees in my head while I mechanically go about my daily routine .
