I am also having trouble remembering a book I read in one of my college classes. I believe it was in 2005. If I remember correctly the main theme of the story revolves around this troubled teenage boy and his family. The only detail that will hopefully trigger someone’s memory is that he slits his wrists (or is thinking about it) in the bathroom and was worried about his mother being angry about the mess.

It was also made into a movie with Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Timothy Hutton - in case anyone is interested. Not to get too far off topic...

I had to read the book in high school, so it's not unlikely that would be required reading in college.
