Agreed! As I was reading the last chapter (view spoiler)[I thought Meg would somehow get captured and that the escape would take place in later books. Very quick resolution. Oh, and love being the solution really made me thing of Harry Potter vs Voldermort! I wonder if J K Rowling ever read A Wrinkle in Time! (hide spoiler)]
Overall, I'm glad I read it, but don't think it was my kind of book, despite the things I liked about it. So...don't think I'll continue with the series.

Whenever you're ready is fine with me honestly, the first book was an easy read so I don't think it would be too hard to read them at the same time as other BRs if I ended up with more than one running at the same time XD

I have finished. And although it was a quick and cute read, I wasn't a big fan of it, and I don't think that I will continue it.
I just felt the story and characters a little bit flat:(

yeah I think this is going to be one of those cases where the movie might be a whole lot better than the book...

I think the concept was good, but just felt flat for me.

The movie is only the first book. I didn't like the book the first time I read it as a kid, but I liked it better later. It's a little esoteric -- so are the others, but I liked them, especially the third one.

Going to go ahead and jump in here. We saw the movie yesterday and the whole time I just kept thinking "Man, I need to reread the book; I don't REMEMBER what happened." So I got home and tadah there's a buddy read for it. Sorry for the comment dump as I read it in about 1.5 hours, but I'll keep an eye on the thread. It's such an odd little book that I like to chat with other people re: what they think. Since I read it many times as a kid, this read was more to compare it with the movie, which I'll be doing.

Ch 1-2
(view spoiler)[ Okay, so I was wondering in the movie if Meg had really been that troubled in school, but yep, she was. Didn't remember that. I loved that the Murray family was mixed in the movie, but I didn't like that CW was asian... he would have had to be adopted, which was so not the point. In fact, they completely missed on CW in the movie in my opinion. I always liked CW in the books -- he's such an odd little guy, but he was so poised and he knew so much and was so composed and intelligent. In the movie, he was obnoxious and bratty and couldn't talk straight. The one thing I didn't care for about CW in this read-through was that L'Engle kept implying he was someone reeeally special. Like more than human. Like almost divine or something. Not quite because this wasn't a Jesus story like Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. It IS a religious allegory, but I am still a little lost about what she's exactly trying to convey other than the age-old battle between good and evil in the natural and supernatural realms. That said, CW's specialness didn't make sense to me and didn't work for me in this read. He feels too much like Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: TNG whom I also hated when I sat down and watched the whole series. Not in favor of this. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 3-4
(view spoiler)[I think overall I have to prefer the Mrs. from the book. I wanted to like them in the movie and Mrs. Which had a couple truly lovely lines to Meg, but I did not understand why Mrs. Whatsit was so cranky about Meg so constantly. It was a little relentless. They're much better in the book. Mrs. Who does quote a lot but she speaks for herself as well and makes so much more sense. Mrs. Whatsit IS still younger than the others but she's not nearly so ridiculous... well, her clothes are and some of the things she does, but her attitude isn't. I got the impression they were angelic beings of some sort in the book, which obviously would not have been done in the movie, but I was looking very hard at the religious allegory in this read.

Not sure how I feel about the garden of rainbow centaurs. I liked it. Also liked the plant thing from the movie, although the dropping Calvin I could have done without. The story was so much better in the book. They tried to fill the movie with eye candy and distractors because Wrinkle in Time is religious and the movie makers got rid of all that. They didn't have much left, and quite frankly, I'm not convinced that Wrinkle in Time is a story that will ever translate well to film. Something else that comes out in the book a lot is Meg's father and what he's doing, the fight with the dark. I so much prefer the way this is handled in the book. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 5-6.5

(view spoiler)[WHY did you not explain tessering, o movie? The book did such a wonderful job with the wrinkle and the ant. They only really showed it in the background of the movie but it's so clearly laid out in the book. I always kind of liked the stopover at the 2D planet; it's a little spot of humor in an otherwise very sobering story. Also after reading, I have to raise eyebrows at the movie's version of the Happy Medium. Why did you do that? The Medium was a little eccentric and dramatic, but the movie made him into something of an idiot.
Although... bad Mrs. Send them off to face IT and more of how CW is in more danger because of who he is. It's not like you're going to explain who he is so please stop with the Mary Sue-ing, please. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 6.5 - 9
(view spoiler)[The children with the bouncing balls is probably one of the most memorable, even iconic scenes in the book. The little boy who fouled up, who was later SEEN being reprocessed through torture was totally skipped over in the movie BUT WHY? Disappointed, movie. Actually... disappointed with a whole lot of the movie through the end, especially now that I've re-read the book. The book made SO MUCH MORE SENSE. The food tasting like sand (although blah CW Mary Sue), the FIGHT to get to CW and take his mind was so much more real in the book. In the movie, all it took was three lines of the multiplication tables. In the book, he fought and won. He fought and started to lose so Cal and Meg fought and won. Over and over until finally he tried to do it alone and failed. Even our one-step-down-from-Jesus boy is prone to the sin of pride, apparently. Mary Sue or not, I still like book CW so much more. Ch 10-Fin
(view spoiler)[ Movie, seriously, HOW could you leave out Aunt Beast? I had forgotten about her, but I loved her so very much. Totally missing from the movie. I loved all their senses, their sweet gentle selves, their non-judgment, their language. Loved, loved, loved. Meg got to be a kid again, and she needed it. The trouble Meg had tessering makes more sense now also -- her father just wasn't very good at it. I don't care for the greenie "you don't love yourself enough" bit from the movie.

The other thing that reeeaaallly bothered me in the movie that I kept thinking "I just don't remember that happening AT ALL" and I really hated about the movie was that her dad copped out and tessered away with Calvin and left her there to fight IT on her own. It sort of happened in the book but not really. He tessered all of them except CW because they were losing the fight and he almost lost Meg too. It was save some of them and prep to go back and get CW or lose everyone. Meg was mad but it was the only real chance any of them had. In the movie, dad just chickened out and bailed and went on home without them both. Meg was right to be reeeally mad at him because he totally blew it in the movie. I liked this so much better in the book. Although... not actually really sure why Meg had to go back alone. Sure, she's closest to CW but that doesn't mean they can't be beneficial to her. IT is really strong. I don't know if I buy the whole "We can just love everyone enough and it will be the answer." I used to be in a roleplay community and that was basically how they solved every problem ever, just stand there and pulsate with lovey feelings. Maybe I'm missing the point. I've always liked this story; I still do but L'Engle was not nearly as deft with her allegory as Tolkien or C.S. Lewis, I don't think. Even after a re-read, I'm still not sure I get the point other than, love people and good's going to win. Nice points but... (hide spoiler)]

I don't have any attachment to any characters except for Charles Wallace, and I have no attachment at all to the main character Meg, whose name I just had to double check on. Not much has happened in the way of plot yet so I'll still hold out hope! (hide spoiler)]

The planet they were on is very odd and I found it hard to visualise the centaur like creatures described. The shadow is very vague-is it a person behind it? What does it do? Is it a byproduct of something humanity has done? I have a lot of questions. This isn't very character driven. Meg and Calvin seem very insta-lovey. (or insta-crushy I suppose!) (hide spoiler)]

I'm still pretty bored by this story, but I think the film will work much better. I never understand why children are sent to save the world without the aid of adults though. (hide spoiler)]

I didn't see the movie but I don't like that he were represented as Asian.
