Owlette | 716 comments Searched and couldn't find an answer to my question about the Lost in translation style points (LiT).

The question is something like this: does the GR main page entry have to mention that the work was translated?

I own Edith Stein: Essential Writings by Edith Stein with an introduction by John Sullivan who selected the writings. I believe her original writings were in German and the book's preface states (page 11):

"Only on a very rare occasion did I think it justified to change a word or phrase translated from the German by the capable translators of the Collected Works of Edith Stein."

I am requesting pre-approval for LiT style points for the above book.

Thanks!

Usually the volume will have a translator, and I don't know why this one does not. However, her Wikipedia page lists writings in English translation, so you are correct that you should get LiT points for this. I should remember but remind me when you post anyway.

Yes for Canon points.

Thank you, Elizabeth. Another one: Did Mother Teresa write in English? She wrote much and I didn't see a translator named on the GR entries.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14239 comments Owlette wrote: "Thank you, Elizabeth. Another one: Did Mother Teresa write in English? She wrote much and I didn't see a translator named on the GR entries. "

I don't see a translator on any of her works nor mention of such in what was admittedly a not especially thorough search. If you can find something that says she wrote in other than English we would be happy to award LiT points, but at the present time I can see nothing that will help you.

Yes - hope you enjoy it!

Cat (cat_uk) | 303 comments I assume that the fact that the "original title" field is in Hebrew is enough to qualify Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind for LiT points?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14239 comments Cat wrote: "I assume that the fact that the "original title" field is in Hebrew is enough to qualify Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind for LiT points?"

Yes, that has been translated. That specific edition doesn't have an ISBN, but I have added the translators to the other paperback that I think is the same, other than page count.

I just used the MPE! I'm actually listening to it at the moment (and very good it is too!)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14239 comments Cat wrote: "I just used the MPE!"

Yes, and thank you! I'm not sure about that edition with no ISBN, I think it might be the ARC, in which case the ISBN got moved (I didn't look). I was commenting because I can't add translators to that edition for clarification without specific knowledge, but was able to verify via a different edition.

Valerie Brown | 3277 comments I see on the 'canon' list one of the choices for Edith Wharton is 'collected short stories'. Does this mean I can read any collection of her short stories (eg. The New York Stories of Edith Wharton ), or would I have to find a volume that has all of her short stories for canon points?

Any collection. And that is true for any author on the Canon, including those that say "selected" poems or stories.

Thank you! I thought I had read that before, but thought I'd better confirm.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14239 comments Valerie wrote: "I thought I had read that before, but thought I'd better confirm. "

No problem. Sometimes I have to trot off and ask such questions myself.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14239 comments Ed wrote: "Will 30.1 bonus points be averaged in for purposes of the most strategic reader?"

Yes. The only points not calculated for most strategic are the RwS and Mega finishes points.

What about for novels? I see that Fanny Burney is on there, but I'm more than 50 percent of the way through Evelina, the only title on there. I want to read at least one other of her good ones (not all of her novels were good). Two of her novels are mentioned in one of Jane Austen's novels in a bit defending novels.

No. The reason we extend for collected/selected is because a collection will be a subset of what is actually on there and we don't know about what Bloom had in mind for selected. Novels are easily understood by the title. You can always ask about "Tales" or "Short Novels". On the other hand, there are a few - very few - authors whose entire works are there. Shakespeare is the one comes immediately to mind, but there may be another one or two as well. There is also a small number whose series is listed, and in those cases, each of the individual titles in the named series will receive Canon points.

Jkmays Where do you find the list of books recommended by RwS readers for 10.10? I am a newbie and cannot find it. :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14239 comments Jkmays wrote: "Where do you find the list of books recommended by RwS readers for 10.10? I am a newbie and cannot find it. :)"

That books for that task hasn't been posted yet because the Fall season hasn't yet been finalized. Tonight I'll get all the books claimed into the database, and Saturday Kate will finalize the points and get messages out to the winners. The books for 10.10 and the final 4 tasks will be posted in the days after (hopefully only a couple of days after).

Owlette | 716 comments The Canon has In My Father's Court by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Can I claim Canon points for reading More Stories from My Father's Court by the same author? Thanks.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14239 comments Owlette wrote: "The Canon has In My Father's Court by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Can I claim Canon points for reading More Stories from My Father's Court by the same author? ..."

Yes. Because "Collected Stories" is on the Canon, any of Singer's story collections will count for the Canon.

Rebekah (bekalynn) Is there a lis for the countries we can use for the 30 pt bonus and is it required to be the first to read a book from that particular country to count?

Kate S | 6459 comments There is a list. I am hoping to post it in the morning. No, you do not have to be the first to post for the 30 point task. :)

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 6 comments I didn't see anywhere to query points, so I hope it's okay to post here.

Per the readerboard, up to post 646, my total points are 120
Per my reckoning my points should be 135
I've listed my posts below - all posts are for the Page Count sub-challenge at 15 points per book - perhaps something wasn't allowed?

9 posts x 15 points each = 135 points
159
160
178
399
400
452
559
594
595

Thank you!
