SOLVED. A short story about a dying woman and a painter who paints a leaf for her. [s]

Hi, I read this short story many years ago as a child. I think it was probably simplified to suit a child's knowledge so there's probably an adult version out there.

The story is about a dying woman who believed that should the last leaf on the tree outside her room falls, she would die.

So this painter who's in love with her decided to help her by painting a piece of paper to make it look like a real leaf. He then went up the tree in a storm to make sure his painted leaf gets stuck to the tree.

What's the title of this story? I believe it's an American story but I am not too sure about that...
