The Way of Kings [Apr 10, 2018]

But yeah, glad that we're reading it.
In case you can't tell, I'm in!
It gets easier Morte, once you're here long enough to join in a bunch of long-term Buddy Reads starting at the beginning of the series... I've been here 2-3 months now and have 4-8 Buddy Reads planned every month thru next May, I think... so I'm too busy with my current buddy reads to worry too much about the wait for other ones down the road...

Same, I'm making my way through Mistborn at the moment, hoping to read Hero of Ages in Dec. :)
It is very easy in this group to end up with a ton of buddy reads. I've learnt (after more than a year) to try to limit myself to two buddy reads a month in the group. With books, I want to read there's usually another buddy read occurring at some point or as long as I've got one other person I can start a buddy read whenever anytime. :-)

I keep wanting to limit myself, but the reads being planned are all books I want to read and ones I already own etc. It's so hard to say no when it's such a good opportunity to pick it up! I suppose if I start to feel a bit burnt out by it I will have to drop some. Definitely seems like you've got a good balance Angela.

Eh, I don't mind so much. Got too much time on my hands, and I really like reading and discussing books.
Haha experience Siobhan, I had to bail on too many buddy reads in this group and need some restraint (for me) as I'm in a few other groups and have Book of the Month's I try to read in them.
I love discussing books too Morte. It's definitely one of the great things about GR.

Do not limit yourself my lovely Guardian! Go all forward and onward and remember that we need to change into bookeaters in order to win and that every buddy read bring extra points :D

Ah yes, every read shall be a buddy read! Go Team! :)

The only problem with all these buddy reads however, is that it can be distracting, and you end up spending more time on goodreads than reading. That, and it does nothing to help my ever-expanding TBR list.
I need to transform myself into a bookeater in 2018. I'm hoping my love of challenges is going to equal lots of extra points.

I've missed out on so many great older(70's the 90's) movies and I hope I never get that mentality or I'll never watch a lot of the movies that I really want to.

I hope I don't become that way one day.

Well that makes me look forward to it even more, thank you.
Maybe you will join the discussion come April, although you've now read it?
I dunno Morte... I'll read/watch things others aren't reading/watching... but being able to discuss/share in the experience really adds something...
@Mods: When did this folder becomes "Sanderson - Everything" lol... could have also chosen "Sanderson - Cosmere"... at least until someone starts a YA buddy read for Reckoners/Apocalypse Guard or Rithmatist

I agree completely, but at the same time there's a lot of movies I'll watch a lot of movies that I know that no one I know will care about.

I might have to reread just to listen to the music at the right parts.
Kaladin

Haha was just about to tell you that 😂

Yeah we're still on! :) it's definitely on Margaret's Master List, so should be fine.

Read the Prologue and the first chapter, and quite frankly I'm kinda annoyed so far. On one hand there's a lot of action, and I love me a lot of action. The problem is that it's really early so there's been no building for any of this, and since I haven't gotten to know any of the characters, I don't have enough of a reason to care about the characters, so it feels like my heart is racing but it's got nowhere to go.
So yeah, bad first impression, but I'll keep on reading. Looking forward to getting to know the characters more so I can actually get more invested in the action.

Here's a shamelessly long excert from the book.

The beginning throws you in before it starts explaining everything...
The Prelude is some setup... then the Prologue is an event that gets further explored in each book from a different POV... book 2 and 3 show it from (view spoiler) POV... we think book 5 will finally show us the full picture, from (view spoiler) POV...
I think chapter 2 is when the book settles down and starts worldbuilding toward more awesomeness later...
Shallan's great in this book... I think she was my fave POV in this book... the one with the least minor quibbles, anyway...

Other than that the characters in the book are really good I’m interested to see what you think of a few of the others you will meet.

Wait! What? Each PART is from someone elses point of view? They don't just go back and forth? That's...something I'm gonna have to force myself to get used to. if I can get used to it. I was really hoping that it'd be like Lightbringer book 1 in this sense. This sucks, and I'm really into Kal and Shallan!
And yeah, I currently at the beginning of PART 2. About 200 pages in. I started early because I figured this would take all month to finish, but if the book remains this interesting(Which I'm kinda afraid it might not now that I know that I won't get any more Kal or Shallan POV.) I'll finish hopefully in less than 2 weeks.

Each book is split into 5 parts... each part has 2-5 POVs usually, listed at the start of that part... in between each part there is a sequence of 3-4 interludes, from the POV of people that don't appear in the main parts of the book... these interludes are part world-building, part bad-guy-POV, generally...
Those are the main parts of the book... each book also focuses on one character's flashbacks, which fill in their story, while also telling important details to the larger narrative, and that flashbacker is the POV that appears in all 5 parts...
The prologue of each book works like the interludes, but exploring the triggering event for the series from multiple angles...
Part 5 is then a shorter wrapup part, so there tends to be like 10 POVs crammed into about 50 pages...
Sometimes the part-wide POV shifts can be annoying, because, for example, I don't think Shallan appears in part 3... and Sanderson likes to end each part on a cliffhanger...
Hope that all made sense... edited for clarity after opening my e-copy...

So in regards to this specific book... you'll get more Kaladin in part 2... and more Kaladin again in Part 3 with Shallan... it doesn't just completely drop the characters from Part 1...
