Have you read a book that didn't live up to its promise?

I came here ready to name the same novel, Philip. I'm surprised and pleased to see that someone else was disappointed by it. I always said that I'd read it when I had time, so when I retired, it was the first thing I read. I had to make a list of characters as I read in order to keep them straight. And after all that trouble, I came away from it thinking that I'd wasted my time.
I believe Sarah means to say she was disappointed with the choice of POVs for that book. I could be wrong, she may be just plain nuts ;)
Personally, I was so disappointed with Hunters of Dune, I wanted to spit! The advertised conclusion to the Dune trilogy was nothing more than a shameless attempt at cashing in by the hackish writers who chose to carry on the series in their own twisted image! Did that seem over the top? Too rage-y and bitter? Not enough?

How about you? When has marketing trumped quality of the story?
