Hello librarians, I have some questions and would like assistance.

I wrote two books which are in a series.
The Silver Ninja Indoctrination

These books are being phased out and will no longer be the official series book.

Instead, I'd like to start anew but I have a few problems.

1.) I want The Silver Ninja: A Bitter Winter to be The Silver Ninja #1.

-The book however, has not yet been published. I have book cover artwork but no ISBN.

2.) I would like to rename the original series so that they still pop up in the search but are technically discontinued. E.G. The Silver Ninja Legacy Edition.

Is this possible? What would you librarians recommend to be the best approach in handling this?

Thank you!

Wilmar

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments You can have two number one's in the same series, if one superseds the other, I guess, or two series with the same name, or even rename one, but the editions should not be altered. That is, the editions of "The Silver Ninja (The Silver Ninja #1)" stay as originally published, with that in the title.

If A Bitter Winter contains the same content as The Silver Ninja, even if rewritten, it should probably just be combined with it. As author you can set the default edition that will show on your profile page and in search results.

(As a reader, I would find any of these solutions confusing. Why not just change the series name?)

Valid question.

I trademarked "The Silver Ninja" as a book series. All of my branding revolves around The Silver Ninja name, but when I published the 1st two novels I didn't really have a firm understanding of what I was doing.

I thought I would simply continue the books as-is but it turned out that a massive rewrite was necessary on the first book. Had I been able to predict the future, I would have never put those two books within the series.

I don't want the newest work to be judged harshly by the reviews left on the first two novels. I'd rather it be treated like a brand new work with a fresh new perspective if possible.

If simply setting the new work as the primary edition would suffice and won't inherit the valid criticisms of the original novel, I could consider doing that.

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments Does it contain the same content?

In terms of plot, no.

In terms of characters, yes and no. Some characters got cut while others were added. The antagonist and protagonist are the same along with the major supporting characters.

It's essentially a giant retconn, kind of like when Marvel or DC think Superman and Spider-man have gotten a little stale. Except in my case, it was to make a stronger novel.

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments So, as if the original is an alternate universe, and now we're getting the Earth 616 version? Sounds different enough to me that I wouldn't combine them, and two series would be the answer indeed, but if you can come up with a clear and brief explanation to put in the series description would help. (I'd do it, but it would likely be neither clear nor brief. Better you do it.)

This sounds reasonable enough.

Which details would I go about editing? For instance, I don't think I've ever seen the series description, only the book description.

Also, would I continue re-using The Silver Ninja name for the second series? Or will it have to be The Silver Ninja (insert name) to start anew?

Sorry for the bajillion questions. I don't have much experience with the GR editing tools.

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments You can't edit series, only librarians can. We can rename the old series if you want, so the new one can just be "The Silver Ninja", and we can add a description to both series pages. So just post what you want them called and the descriptions, and we'll do it for you.

Awesome, that sounds great. I will get the new information ready and make sure that it's -not- going to change. :)

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Krazykiwi.

Well it's 2018 and the book and series information should now be complete.

If you can help me or any other librarian, I would most appreciate it.

I would like to rename The Silver Ninja *series* (which contains The Silver Ninja and Indoctrination) to:

The Silver Ninja Prototype.
The Silver Ninja Prototype series contains the first two stories ever published by Wilmar Luna. This collection includes the 2012 edition of The Silver Ninja and 2014's The Silver Ninja: Indoctrination. This series was discontinued in 2017.
For his newest work, please see The Silver Ninja: A Bitter Winter which is book 1 of 5.

For the 2018 series, it will start with:

The Silver Ninja: A Bitter Winter (The Silver Ninja #1)

“She stretched out her hand and touched SIRCA’s waist which felt as it looked, smooth and solid. When she removed her hand, a trail of stringy mucus-like fibers dangled from her palm like glue—How is this a suit?”

On a cold winter night in New York City, former NYPD officer Cindy Ames snuck into a top-secret lab and stole a dangerous technology. With this device, she physically transformed herself into an unstoppable superhuman.

Tortured by guilt over her partner’s murder, Cindy swore to use her new weapon to bring justice to the killer who ruined her life. But when the deaths of innocent people plague Manhattan, all evidence points to her. Has Cindy's quest for revenge gone too far?

The truth she discovers about herself may be more than she bargained for.

Super powers can save a city but break a hero.

The Silver Ninja: A Bitter Winter is book 1 of 5 of The Silver Ninja series.
