I still don't really get how they could've found a small orange flag in the middle of an orange desert? How did they go directly north through all of the mountains and the city?
I don't think they literally walked in a straight line towards the North, but their destination was North and that is what was most important in the story. The flag was done by WICKED, and as far as I remember, it was allegedly the mark of 'safe haven'. Also to say that everything in the Scorch was made up by WICKED and they were manipulating it to their will.
