Kelly | 1003 comments In this book the author, Ta-Nehisi Coates, writes to his son. Coates starts by telling of his experiences growing up as an African-American in the city of Baltimore. He expresses the fear he had that at anytime he could be injured by police, whites or others in his neighborhood. He tells of the happiness he found at Howard University and talks of the multinational communities he saw in New York City.

Coates still sees effects of the past in how African-Americans are treated today. This results in a different set of rules they must follow and the law not protecting races equally. He gives examples of where police are not held accountable for actions taken that result in wrongful accusations or death. It is a very honest book in that it speaks so much of the author's life; and it is very relevant to the same race issues discussed in the national news today.
