Since his debut with M.A.N in 2000, Kwon Cheol has not walked an easy path. As the maknae of the first It boy group of the twenty-first century, then as a soloist, actor, and company’s breadwinner, and now, at age thirty-two, as the founder and CEO of PRISM Entertainment, Kwon Cheol has worked tirelessly to bring innovative and high-quality performances and ideas to the table.
❛❛ The name ‘PRISM’ was my own idea,” Kwon Cheol explains. The meaning of the company’s name is this: just as a prism will reflect a rainbow of colors so long as it has a source of light, PRISM Entertainment will continue to show a variety of musical colors as long as it has artists.
“For the label to be putting out a variety of musical styles is important to me,” he says. “As I am myself an artist, I understand how dear creative control is, and I have every intention to allow my artists to pursue the music they want.” When asked whether or not the music would be public-friendly is a concern to him and the company interests, Kwon Cheol laughed.
“So long as PRISM continues to house the best artists around, I don’t think we have anything to worry about. While it’s true that some genres tend to be more popular than others, I believe that true musical talent and passion can be communicated universally.”
Many have questioned why Kwon Cheol would leave his successful career at the top entertainment company in South Korea. Surely money couldn’t have been an issue for B.D. Entertainment’s former top artist.
“B.D. Entertainment was my home for a long time,” Kwon Cheol says finally, after thinking about it. “I’ll always be thankful for the opportunities I got there that have enabled me to become the artist I am today. But baby birds need to leave the nest someday, and how can I ask for reward without taking any risks? And besides,” he adds, “I was ready for a fresh start, no longer as M.A.N’s Cheol, but as my own ‘man,’ so to speak: as Kwon Cheol. I don’t need, nor do I think I want, any labels other than that. I’m doing this to become the man I’ve always wanted to be. Singer, actor, entrepreneur — I can do it all, now. I’m taking my fate into my own hands.”
And who could blame Kwon Cheol for wanting a blank slate? Despite a small controversy which occurred after he swore on broadcast, he was able to emerge with a clean record. His former bandmates, on the other hand, weren’t so lucky. Not even a year after their contract renewal with B.D. Entertainment, M.A.N was swept into scandal and controversy when leader and oldest member Kim Do-woon was found to have fabricated a car accident and produced fraudulent medical records in order to evade his compulsory military enlistment. After Kim Do-woon’s arrest in early 2008, M.A.N seemed to be cursed.
Kwon Cheol confesses, “I didn't know what to do back then. I had no clue. These were my hyungs — the men I had trained with since I was only ten years old — and I had always looked up to them, always thought they would do the right thing.” Everything, he explains, seemed like it was falling apart, all at once. And it was: less than a year and a half after Kim Do-woon’s indictment, fellow M.A.N member Lee Sun-woo faced allegations for the sexual assault of at least twenty-three women.
During the scandal in 2009, some fans had attacked Kwon Cheol for ‘betraying’ the man then known as M.A.N’s “Sunshine Sunwoo.” At the beginning of the controversy, Kwon Cheol admits, “I didn’t want to believe it. I couldn’t. I didn't think Sun-woo hyung was capable of such a thing. And I didn’t believe it at first. But then more and more came out, and I had to. The evidence was all there. The truth was that Lee Sun-woo was not who I thought he was. I had to believe it, and although part of me wanted it to be a big mistake, I knew I had to do the right thing and speak out. He’d hurt people who had deserved better, and whatever love, admiration, I’d had for him before — it wasn’t as important as making sure he wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone else.”
If only it had been smooth sailing for M.A.N after that, Kwon Cheol laughs. If only. The reality is that only a month later, fellow member Yoo Min-hyuk terminated his contract and moved to Russia to marry the model he had secretly been dating, leaving Kwon Cheol and Hwang Joon-jae as a duo. Soon thereafter, Hwang Joon-jae was revealed to have connections to a cult. Some rumors circulated about Kwon Cheol himself, alleging that the situation had led Kwon to attempt “drastic” measures to escape the chaos and pressure of the situation. These rumors were quickly denied by B.D. Entertainment, but some gossip surrounding M.A.N’s fall from grace.
When asked if there was any truth to the rumors that he himself had been the one to release the information regarding Hwang Joon-jae’s cult ties as a means of starting his solo career, Kwon Cheol laughed again. “It’s true that I was able to start my solo career because of it, but the idea that I ever would have done anything to hurt my hyungs is ridiculous.”
While he probably would have been able to achieve the same success had he been a soloist from the start, given his handsome appearance, music production ability, and title as best male idol vocalist, Kwon Cheol says that he wouldn’t have changed anything. No longer “Cutie Cheol” of Millenium Adolescents Next fame, Kwon Cheol has indeed matured into his own man.
“I made up my mind a long time ago to live without regrets,” he says. “To live without my regrets, and to chase my dreams fearlessly. That is what makes life worth living to me.” ◆

LEE SU-YEON (이수연), better known by her stage name VENUS, is a twenty-two year old singer, producer, actress, model, and television personality. After her debut at age sixteen, Lee quickly rose to fame for her powerful vocals, sweet visuals, and "cutie-sexy" image.
Since 2011, Lee has remained one of the top female solo artists in the K-pop scene, despite her label change in 2016. In addition to her music, Lee has been the model for a number of CFs, and has modeled more than once for Seoul Fashion Week. In 2015, she began her acting ventures with her supporting role in Please Remember Me.

In February 2016, Lee and her lawyers filed a lawsuit against her previous and original label, C.K. Media, alleging that not only was the company withholding Lee's earnings, but that she was not being provided with suitable living conditions. In July 2016, it was reported that the matter had been settled privately and her contract with C.K. Media terminated. In August 2016, PRISM Entertainment confirmed that Lee had signed an exclusive contract with them.

Although none of it was baseless, the degree to which C.K. Media abused Lee's contract was exaggerated on almost every front. Her desire to leave her company stemmed primarily from her desire to produce her own music, as well as to escape the company's dating ban, and she otherwise would have had to wait until 2020 for the end of her nine-year contract. Life sure is easier when you can afford good lawyers, isn't it?

You may not have heard of Kim Ji-eun, also known as Crystal Kim — but you've certainly heard CRYSTALiZE's work. The twenty-eight year old American-born producer and songwriter is one of the country's top earning individuals for royalties alone. Having collaborated with leading industry artists on chart-topping hits such as Kwon Cheol's One More Chance and VENUS' HOME, Kim's genius has passed what is perhaps the greatest test in the music industry: the public's favor.
"You must feel so lucky," I commented when I sat down to interview Kim over coffee.
"Luck?" She paused, mug halfway to her lips. "Is luck even real? Regardless, I stopped relying on it years ago."
In 2006, Kim, then seventeen years old, debuted with girl group PRINCESS K in a short-lived idol venture. After the group's disbandment in 2008, Kim says she returned to the United States to go to university with plans to get an office job.
"I told myself, I tried," she said. "I tried, and it didn't work out. Maybe it was bad luck. Now, looking back, I know I wasn't ready."
But despite her plans to give up music for good, she couldn't shake the fire that burned within her. "I live and breathe music," she said. "Not doing it felt wrong. I found myself listening to the radio on the morning commute and saying, I could've done it better. And I thought, to myself, staying here is worthless. I had to do something."
"So you did," I said.
"So I did," she finished.
When I asked whether she would ever consider debuting again as a singer, Kim laughed out loud.
"Oh, never," she said. "I've found my place, and that's behind the scenes. The spotlight isn't really for me. No, I wouldn't even feature," she said. "No way."
I told her, "If you keep it up, people might wonder if you can sing at all."
She laughed again. "That would be quite something, wouldn't it? A producer who can't even carry a tune."

Love Arrow Shoot’s Identity Revealed: Boy Group Member And Son Of Famous Singer Ends Reign As “King Of Masked Singer”

The episode of MBN’s “King of Masked Singer” that aired on August 6 revealed the identity of two-time winning King “Love Arrow Shoot” to be a member of an idol group who is also the son of a famous folk singer.
The last performance of the show pitted “Love Arrow Shoot” against newcomer “Cry For Me Argentina”. “Love Arrow Shoot” performed “Winter Mail” to hold his position as King of Masked Singer for another week. As in the previous weeks, “Love Arrow Shoot” amazed the audience with his heartfelt vocals and was met with thunderous applause for a perfect performance.
SPOILER:
Ultimately, “Cry For Me Argentina” was crowned the new King of Masked Singer by a narrow margin of seven votes.
Accepting defeat, “Love Arrow Shoot” wished “Cry For Me Argentina” luck in future rounds before taking to the stage once more to reveal his identity. Taking off his mask, he revealed himself to be WRW’s Dongmin.
Dongmin is also the son of Bae Sungsook, a respected folk singer who made her debut in the 1980s. “My mother is my inspiration,” the idol explained. “She never went easy on me once I told her I wanted to be a singer, but she has always supported me. I hope that with this performance I have made her proud both as a mother and as a singer.”
WRW debuted in 2016 under ZH Entertainment after being chosen via audience votes on the televised survival show Nineteen. At twenty-five years old, Yoo Dongmin is the oldest member of the group and has gained popularity for his impressive vocal technique and stable high notes.

It was only a matter of time — treated by company and fans alike as little more than Adonis’ fresh and youthful beauty, Dahee never got much acknowledgement for her actual skills as a group member. And so when she was injured in a car collision in 2012 and was mandated by her doctors to take a hiatus from group activities, she didn’t complain. No, like the loyal Adonis member she is, she instead promoted the group on set of variety shows and photoshoots. Come year end award shows, she was able to join her so-called sisters on stage again.
It was 2014 when she re-injured herself — and, the doctors told her, if she wasn’t careful, she’d never be able to dance again. After discussions with B.D. Entertainment, it was decided that, for the sake of her health, she would participate in Adonis’ albums, music videos, and variety show promotions, but not on-stage.
Since then, Dahee has embarked on a now-flourishing acting and modeling career — an award-winning career, even, for both her acting and her work on OSTs. Who’s the talentless visual now?
CRITICISM WAS RAISED when Dahee uploaded a photograph to her public Instagram account. The photo — which depicted her in bed with a man — was intended for her private account, and taken down within two minutes, but the damage was done. After a day of speculation (who was he? model? actor?) one netizen was able to identify the man in the photo as dermatologist Kim Chul. B.D. Entertainment released a statement explaining that the photo was actually taken in a VIP treatment room, and the two had taken a selfie for promotional reasons, and that they were definitely not dating. (Yeah, right.)
WHEN DAHEE’S HIATUS was announced, many speculated that she planned to leave the group. She and Adonis trended for almost a day worldwide, and double that in Korea. Many thought that it would be the “end of Adonis” — which, clearly, it was not. Many also thought that Dahee might “betray” the group by fully withdrawing, but to the delight of some and chagrin of others, she remains a member of Adonis. In truth, there was reason to speculate her departure. When “discussing” with B.D. Entertainment, Dahee had every intention to formally withdraw from the group. This was not for selfish reasons as anti-fans claimed — although she did indeed plan to focus on an acting and modeling career, there was also the danger of injuring herself beyond full recovery if she pushed herself too hard. However, since the group members’ contracts were not up for expiration or renewal, Dahee was ultimately unable to negotiate her full withdrawal from Adonis, only from music show promotions.

DANG NA RI, also known as Victoria Dang, has never been in need or want. Born to two more-than-successful parents in Brentwood, California, has always gotten anything she wanted. In 2015, netizens embarked on a witch hunt for evidence that he and (Haeryung) were dating. (Spoiler alert: they were not.) IN 2016, DONGHYUN was investigated for alleged insider trading. It was determined to be a lucky coincidence — nothing but a good gut feeling. What really happened? Does it even matter? After all, nothing can be proven for sure. In some cases, it helps to have the image as the village idiot... after all, defense claims he didn't even know that insider trading was a thing. And, what's more — they believed him.
UNKNOWN TO FANS, Donghyun isn't quite as available as he would seem. Some friends would say he's seeing someone. Closer friends would say he's dating pretty seriously. And his family would know that he's actually been secretly married to Jung Sooryun of GENESIS for over a year now. Oh, it is easier to cover your tracks when the world thinks you're too dumb to keep a secret.

In some ways she remains a little girl — like the fact that she stopped growing in ninth grade, and people seem to find her height of five feet and one inch rather adorable. (It's not. She's not.) In no way is Lee Jinah an imposing figure, which has proved to be a not-so-good thing, seeing as no one at work seems to take her seriously.
It's not an easy time when you work a job that most middle-class workers look down on, let alone the rich ass bastards she works with; but it pays the bills, and she's not going to complain about that. Or, more accurately, she's not in any place to be complaining about it. She's used to it by now — people appalled that a woman could be a repair worker, that someone as pretty as her working in such a place hasn't been snatched up as a doll-faced trophy wife, getting work requests from married men who want any chance to stare at her ass or slip a hand up her skirt. Whispers that she's actually just here to try to seduce one of the well-paid lawyers at the firm. It's just part of the job. She's pretty, so people think she's here for some sort of vixenly agenda; but at the same time, if she makes any effort to make herself ugly, then no one will listen to her at all. Maybe when they listen, their eyes are on her chest and their hands are where they shouldn't be, but at least she can do her job and live under a roof with running water.

Sure, she used to take a couple online classes. But she doesn't have the time or money to continue that, not after all of the hospital bills and funeral costs following her mother's health complications. And she refuses to take it for granted — she's lucky that her mom's cafe had been across the street from the law firm, and that she was able to make the connections for Jinah to have this job for the past four years.
