[ 譚美齡 ]IRENETAM

femalenineteenpre-medical studentkinesiology major

IF LOOKS COULD KILL, Irene would be the modern day serial killer. Aged nineteen, Irene Tam has mastered the art of glaring at people before they can make the mistake of talking to her. It's not that Irene is antisocial, or that she never outgrew her edgy teen phase (okay, maybe she is, but just a little bit) — really, she's doing these boys a favor, because one, she likes girls, two, she has a physics midterm to study for, and, most importantly, three, there's no way she could miss tonight's episode of Chopped.

Some might say that Irene takes food a little too seriously and everything else not seriously enough, but she thinks her fixation is perfectly justified. When you grew up with parents who own a Michelin-rated restaurant, of course you're not going to settle for university cafeteria food, of all things. And maybe she spends a ridiculous amount of money on food, and chooses food and food television programs over all her real responsibilities in life, but so what? She can. And if a pretty girl won't take her out to eat, then fuck it, this pretty girl is taking herself out to eat.

A M YH W A N G

황장미 [ hwang jang mi ] : female, twenty years old, unwilling engineering student

WHEN AMY WAS FIVE, she told her parents she wanted to be an engineer. A railroad, engineer, actually, which may have been in part due to her fixation on Thomas the Tank Engine. Her parents were thrilled. Fifteen years later, Amy's at university to be an entirely different kind of engineer, and she's going to be really honest here — it kind of makes her want to die.

NAMSEOYEON25, female, militia, enforcer

NAM SEO YEON, as many do, comes from humble beginnings. Her mother always did what she could to make ends meet, her father struggled with alcoholism, her older brother left the family as soon as he could and never looked back. So she had to fend for herself, and when this opportunity came up, she wasn't stupid enough to turn it down.

Of course, that was five years ago, and Seoyeon is in a much better place now than she was then. Despite no longer being the #edgy twenty-year-old she was at the time, Seoyeon is by no means what one might consider an open book, or a fun time, but — she's doing her best, okay? That should count for something.

J E O NJ U N H O ━━━━ human / male / 30 / abstrego / analyst

Okay, Junho is a little bit of a serial dater. So what? It's not like he has some sort of playboy, Casanova complex. No; he's just on a very dedicated mission to find The One™. Because yeah, okay, he's a little bit of a hopeless romantic, and also he's not getting any younger, and his twin sister and younger brother are both already married with kids and his mom won't let him forget it ("if you don't get married soon it'll be too late and you'll be impotent!"). Yeah, yeah, all of his girlfriends have all dumped him for various reasons: he worked too much, he was so handsome he made her look ugly, his fashion sense was irreconcilably terrible, he was a bad cook, he wasn't rich enough, etc., etc., etc. He broke up with a girl, once, and she was so annoyed that she made him get back together with her for two minutes just so that she could dump him instead. (Damn it, Jung Eunhye!)

So why does anyone take the man with multicolored suits and ridiculously patterned shirts and twenty-seven ex-girlfriends seriously? Because he's damn smart, that's why. Junho has always been good with numbers, with figures, with data, and he's only gotten better at his job with experience. Sure, the new employees generally think that their first meeting with him is some form of hazing because they can't believe their supervisor dresses like he's colorblind and acts like an twelve year old, but so what? You can't argue with his data analysis and really, that's what matters.

L E ES E U N GH Y U N
thirty-four years oldhumanmaleprofessorcorporate ethics expert

Is he a politician? Businessman? Underwear model? People can never quite seem to put their finger on what, exactly, they think Lee Seunghyun is. He seems like he can be anything — polished and professional when he meets with corporate executives, smooth and charismatic as he wines and dines all the information he could possibly want out of people. He's something of a human chameleon, and it leaves a feeling that he might have something to hide, something to gain.

The short answer is this: Lee Seunghyun is a professor of ethics at one of the most prestigious law schools in South Korea. His area of expertise is corporate ethics, and he frequently serves as a consultant in corporate lawsuits. His face brings his students to class, and his lectures make them stay.

In truth, Lee Seunghyun is a man with his own agenda. He's no stranger to the corruption in the business world — his grandfather made all of their money through ties to gang activity, and his father lost everything when he was exposed for embezzlement among other things. He's an ex-chaebol, if you will. Lee Seunghyun doesn't have something to hide, because nothing he's ever done has been illegal. He doesn't have anything to gain, because he's been living in the same Seoul penthouse for years now. He doesn't do this for any reason other than that it's the right thing to do, because these corrupt corporate executives are just going to fuck everyone over if they continue. Can you blame him for being a little skeptical when companies are handed over to people too young to be responsible?

LEEKYUNGWON

thirty-sixfemalehumanabstrego's chief compliance officer

As the eldest child in her family and now as Abstrego's CCO, Lee Kyungwon likes to think she's always had a knack for keeping others out of trouble. Be it breaking Mom's favorite bowl or squeezing a new android model past tight government regulations, Kyungwon knows what she's doing when it comes to problem solving.

She's always been smart. She's always been ambitious. And she's always known what she's doing. One day, Kyungwon will see herself at the head of a company. But she knows that, as a woman — and hardly an intimidating-looking one, at that — she's going to have to work two times, three times, four times, as hard as any man in the field, so that's what she's doing. And sure, their leadership can be questionable. But if people won't listen to her, that's okay — there's a reason she wears stilettos to work (and no, it's not because she's only 151 cm), and it's so that she can step on anyone who doesn't listen to her and look gorgeous while doing it.

S E OM I N J O O

female, twenty-six, classless, secretary.

BY MOST STANDARDS, Seo Minjoo has led a rather posh life. In a long line of prominent Earth Class figures, Minjoo is a deviation from the Seo family norm. And, of course, there is a reason for this: Minjoo's father, Seo Jaebeom, chose to marry for true love rather than lineage, and married a classless woman. As fate would have it, she was a carrier of the gene for the affinity, and the two had six beautiful Earth Class prodigy sons... and then Minjoo was born.

Losing her mother at a young age left Minjoo the only classless member of the Seo family, putting her in a slightly uncomfortable position. On one hand, she's the (somewhat) treasured only daughter and at least half of her brothers don't dislike her, and on the other hand, she has to live in the shadow of everyone else in the family for the entirety of her life, including her twelve-year-old half-brother, and he can't even remember to use deodorant.

It's not even like Minjoo is incompetent — by classless standards, Minjoo has lived well. She's been a filial daughter, she's helped host more dinner parties than there are stars in the sky, she has a university degree... but it means nothing, because she doesn't have the affinity. Which is why she's working for the Regime now — if she doesn't have the affinity, her grandfather told her, the least she could do for the family is seduce some well-off member of the Earth Class and at least give birth to a son with the affinity. But, she tells herself, if she's here, she might as well do her job well, and those files aren't going to organize themselves.

D OJ I H O O N

male, 33, fire class, ethics instructor.

IF TO BURN with love / were the same thing as to die / long before now
/ a thousand times I would have died / a thousand times over.
Or so the poets say. Do Jihoon, Fire Class, graduated top of his year, seems to burn with love for only one thing, which is assigning essays to his students. Of course he does — all of the days he takes off from teaching have to have some excuse, so he assigns yet another research or opinion paper and calls it an independent study day. Does he care that you woke up at the ass crack of dawn to make it to his classroom at 7 AM? No.

There is, perhaps, some irony in the fact that the boy who once wanted to be Protector of the Regime ended up teaching ethics. And eighteen-year-old Do Jihoon may have thought that the affinity was all about flashiness and power, but thirty-three-year-old Do Jihoon can't find it in himself to get out of bed some mornings because he remembers the day, at 6:31 AM, that Do Jihwan, favored to win the Trials, was announced dead. He had — they all had — been outsmarted by the short kid who'd spent every waking hour in the library.

Fire Class prodigy? Would be better off as a trainer, as an assistant to one of the Council? Perhaps. Jihoon doesn't care where he maybe should be — he's where he's chosen to be. And if that means ditching his own class to sip a white chocolate mocha with three pumps of vanilla, so be it.

L E EK Y U N G A H

female, twenty-six, water class, nurse.

MANY QUESTIONED WHY Kyungah would become a nurse. Graduating as one of the best Water Class trainees of her year, it seemed to many a waste of potential. Treating the bumps and bruises of trainees appears trivial compared to the things that she could be doing instead, but this is what Kyungah has chosen for herself.

To her colleagues, Kyungah may not seem the type to take on this kind of role — it's up for debate as to whether anyone has ever seen or heard her laugh. With a no-nonsense, all-business attitude and a hell of a glare, Kyungah isn't exactly the type to make friends at work. But that's not what she's here to do, after all.

She's here for the patients, and she takes her job seriously. She's here because maybe no one has able to control their affinity enough to use it for complicated medical uses, but she can make blood clot faster than the body's natural healing capabilities, but she can siphon drips and samples without contaminating them, but she can bathe a patient no matter how mobile they are. Her class makes her a better nurse, and she's here because she wants to help people. So of course she'll put on a smile for them, try to help put them a little more at ease when they're hurting — she's here to help them, not to please anyone.

K A N GS U N G H O

male, twenty-eight, water class, trainer.

THE THREE WORDS that put any student at ease: "I'm not angry." But then come the three worst words ever heard: "I'm just disappointed." For better or for worse, Kang Sungho is that type of teacher.
