Hello Book Club Members!

My name is Nicole and I will be leading this month’s discussion for the book Born a Crime by Trevor Noah.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Trevor Noah, he is a stand-up comedian from South Africa and the current host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. Even though he is a comedian, this book doesn’t really focus at all on his career in comedy. Instead, he gives us a glimpse into his childhood in South Africa during the end of apartheid. The book consists of 18 personal essays that delve into a wide range of topics: race, domestic violence, religion, family, poverty, etc. I’m sure we will have a lot to discuss in the coming weeks.

I started the audio book this week. I love it when the author is the reader. I’m really enjoying it so far!

Happy to hear you're enjoying the book so far. I'm reading the print copy of the book but I wonder if I should try the audio since, like you said, it's great to hear the author tell their own story.

Hello Nicole! Like Alyson I “read” this book using the audio version. I *highly* recommend it. Being able to hear Noah’s accent and the way he vocalizes other’s accents was a highlight of the book for me. I finished it back in March (before I knew it was a book club pick) so I’m planning on picking up the print version to refresh myself so I can participate in this discussion. I look forward to our conversations!
