January 2018 will kick off the seventh year for the Mount TBR Reading Challenge (I miscounted last year!) and I don't seem to be getting those mountains moved at all. Despite the fact that I hope to have knocked 150 books off of my 2017 Mount TBR by the end of December, there are still whole mountain ranges lined up and down my hallway and in my back room waiting to be conquered. As fast as I read 'em and get them off the stacks, my bookaholic ways help me replace them. [Case in point--just returned from a long weekend in which I brought home about 20-25 new-to-me books.]

So, once again, I plan to concentrate on reading primarily from my own books in the coming year. Still hoping to plant my flag on Mount Olympus (I've slowed down a bit in 2017 and it's not looking as likely as I thought this year...) And you're invited to join me in knocking out some of those books that have been waiting in the wings for weeks....months...even years.

Please tell us a bit about yourself--if only to join the chorus of "I'm a book-aholic and I need to read these books I keep accumulating!"

Debra Barstad My name is Deb and I love to read as you will see I have over 4000 books on my TBR list. I hope to knock off at least 100 of them this year

Brianna (bebecburt) | 30 comments Hello! I am Brianna and this will be my third attempt at this challenge! I can't wait to get started!

Hilary (A Wytch's Book Review) (knyttwytch) I'm Hilary and I started part way through 2017 - very nearly got my 150 read but even more have been added (ooops!) so boy do I need this again lol.

Anna Louise Kallas | 6 comments Hi. I'm Anna Louise and this is my third year doing Mount TBR. I haven't started my 2018 list yet but hope to post it soon. I'm an academic librarian and love my job. Being a part of this group has been wonderful! Happy reading!

Hi Mount TBRers! This is my second year participating, although I got a late start during 2017.

My goal is to read at least one book a month that I own. Although I purposely wiped clean my overloaded tbr shelf on GR this year, I probably own 50+ kindle books (including public domain classics), plus a few hardbound books that need to be read. I know that doesn't sound like a whole lot but even if an ebook is on sale for $1.99, I buy it out of interest and with good intentions, even though some months I can only read a few books.

Wishing good luck to everyone for the upcoming 2018 reading challenges.

Jessica (covered_in_rust) | 44 comments Hi! I'm Jessica and this is my second time participating. I'm still a good way away from finishing the 150 book challenge that I tried for in 2017 so I'm going to do things a little differently this year and start with the first mountain and work my way up.

UPDATE: New goal being undergone this year. Instead of concentrating on how many books I can read, I'm going to give myself a goal of Pages to Be Read for 2018. I'm still climbing the mountains because it helps me focus on reading my own books, but if I only get a few mountains in this time, I'll be fine with it. :D

My goal is going to be 35,000 pages. I figure if I would normally read 100 books at around 350 (some more, some less) pages each in a year, then that's about my ability. This will just give me the leniency of being able to read big chunksters of books without feeling like I'm falling behind on my goal.

Can't wait to read with all of you! Good luck!

Karen | 93 comments Hi I'm Karen and this is my second attempt at Mount TBR. I have signed up for 60 books again. Still hoping to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2017 although I am still 10 books off. I love this group and look forward to seeing the progress of others.

message 10: by Natália (new)

Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) | 163 comments Hey, everyone! I'm Natalia and this is my third year climbing and I'm already rouding up my gear for another year of scaling my never-ending TBR pile! I managed to make a good dent in it in 2017 - finishing on-going series and trilogies, knocking off lots of standalones and DNF book series I started but didn't like it enough to continue on, which brought my TBR from 1.000 or so books to 800+ books!

2018 is my residency application and college graduation year, so I'm expecting my reading time to go down a little, so I'm aiming for a lower mountain. Maybe start from the botton and see where I end up by the end of the year!

I am so glad to see so many of you returning for another climb--it helps me to know that I'm not the only one with a never-ending TBR pile!

message 12: by Nell (new)

Nell I'm Nell coming back for another trek up my TBR mountain. The good news is that my Mt TBR goal for 2017 is within reach. But I acquired even more books this year! Oh well - there are worse habits.

Good luck to my fellow climbers. See you on the mountainside.

Brianna (bebecburt) | 30 comments Oh well - there are worse habits.

So true! My husband is always commenting on how many books I end up buying, but I always say - it could be worse things I spend my money on!

Hi, Veronica! Thanks for joining the climbing crew. Good luck!

message 16: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) Hey, all! This will be my 5th year climbing. I have about 500 books on my TBR list, excluding about 100 books I (hopefully) will check out from the library instead of buy. I plan to do Mt. Kilimanjaro for the 3rd year in a row.

In the past, I've made goals of buying fewer than x-amount of new books, or of finishing series that I've started, or of reading the oldest books on my TBR. While I make a little progress towards those ends, I'm learning that I really am a mood reader. So in 2018, I'll just read what I feel like without trying to meet any specific requirements (except, of course, no books acquired in 2018!)

Best wishes, everyone!

Lynn (larainey) | 93 comments Hi I'm Lynn and this will be the sixth year that I have done the climb. I'm going for 60 books again this year because I love adding more to my TBR pile. XD

message 19: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I have been doing this challenge since 2014 and find it a great motivation to read more of my own books, rather than giving in to my library addiction. Though I still get lots of books from the library!

As some you may know, I got boxes and boxes of books from my parents' library when they sold their house in 2009 & even more when they did a big house clearing in 2014. Some of these were replacements for copies I already owned (which were in poorer condition as I bought mine second or third hand) but there were still hundreds of new-to-me books. I am slowly making a dent in this mountain of books but have plenty to keep me climbing for years!

message 20: by Louise (new)

Louise | 28 comments Hi I'm Louise, and this is my 3rd year doing the challenge.

I still have 542 unread books, that I added to my TBR shelf, when I joined Goodreads back in 2011 - I want to read at least some of them this year, but I'm going for a shorter mountain than in 2017 (switching from Ararat to Vancouver), as I want to read longer books in 2018.

Happy climbing & Reading everyone!

message 21: by Tasha (last edited Nov 08, 2017 06:26AM) (new)

Tasha Hi everyone! I'm Tasha and this is my first year doing this challenge and I'm really looking forward to it. I've set personal challenges in the past to move books off my shelf (both here, at home and on my kindle) but this past year I barely budged so seeing this group I knew I had to jump in! I'm looking forward to making a significant dent on my shelves and getting to meet you all as well. :)

Now to decide on Pike's Peak or Mount Blanc...

message 24: by Ivy (new)

Ivy (luvbug) I did this challenge several years ago and got around 100 books off of my pile. Then life got in the way and I have been gone for a couple of years. Now I am back and hope to read at least another 100 books this year. I currently have 411 books in house and over 1,000 on my kindle. Needless to say I have more books then I know what to do with. Then on top of that I keep finding the Little Free Libraries in town and trading the books I have read for new to me ones. I am addicted to reading and I need help. Hopefully this challenge will help me get some of the pile down.

Sam (aramsamsam) Hello fellow mountaineers!

I hope to start 2018 with no more than 45 books on my physical TBR, as number I reached largely thanks to Bev's wonderful challenge. It will be my fourth year! You will find me on my way up Pike's Peak :)

message 29: by Kendra (new)

Kendra (kendrasmills) | 2 comments Hi! I plan to track my challenge here on Goodreads and on Litsy (@kendrastephaniekaryn). I've participated for the past two years. In 2018, I plan to climb Mount Everest (100 books). I currently have about 300 books on my TBR, both physical and digital.

message 30: by July (new)

July | 120 comments Hello! My name is July and I love books. I love words. I love the worlds that books bring me to through their words.

I participated in the the 2017 challenge climbing Pikes Peak. I started small and will hit my goal of the 14 books I put on the list by Christmas.

By the middle of the year I simply started to stack my inbound books and made a list of all of them TBR in 2018, I plan to scale Mount Blanc (24 books). That is about the number I have on my list, and double my 2017 goal.

Thank you, Bev, for helping me to focus my reading.

Lillia (pages-and-petals) (pages-and-petals) Hello everyone, my name is Cassie and I have a book problem. With over 600 books on my PTR (and that's not even everything I own) I think this is a great challenge to accept.

Is anyone else planning on reading graphic novels or manga for their challenge?

Hi, Cassie! Welcome to the 2018 climb.

I think it's safe to say that most of us here in the climbing crew have a book problem. No matter how many times I climb Mt. Everest, there are still more mountains waiting to be climbed (and I keep moving more mountains in.

message 36: by Rachael (last edited Nov 12, 2017 11:14AM) (new)

Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) First time doing Mount TBR. I have so many unread books that I am running out of space on my bookcase (and floor)! It also doesn't help that I have a tendency to download a lot of the free or daily deals on Kindle. Hoping to reach the top of Mount Blanc this year and I have chosen to only use my physical unread books for this challenge.

message 37: by Lady Clementina (new)

Lady Clementina ffinch-ffarowmore | 102 comments This is the first time I'm participating and I think I'll start with a modest number - 60 (Kiliminjaro) with an option to upgrade. This year's been a busy one so haven't been reading as much as I've liked but have ended up adding just a few less than what I've read to the pile increasing it at the end of the day.

I enjoy reading a range of genres-classics, mysteries and detective fiction, history and historical fiction, humour (of the Wodehouse/Henry Cecil variety), children's books, history of science, etc.

message 39: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 109 comments This will be my 5th year participating, and don't seem to make much of a dent on that mount TBR. Of course the new books do come in much faster than I read the old ones, just might have something to do with it. ;-)

My goal is usually modest at Mount Blanc (24 books) and barely make it (or not), but 2017 will have me at the top of Mount Ararat (48 books) before the year is out. I've decided to start there for 2018 to challenge myself to read what I already own. Let's do this!

I have a huge number of unread books, well over 1,000 in all formats, not all have made it onto my goodreads list, most have, and oh, it just grows so fast! Certainly some audio books will be there, but I'm going to try focusing on the print books, so I really can clear some shelf space, if that's possible.

Good luck to all and happy reading!

message 44: by Fab (new)

Fab | 4 comments Hi everyone! Participated in 2016 and made a small yet motivating dent on my piles of TBR’s. I’m determined for next year to read mostly from my piles as it looks like I accumulate more books than I can read them! Lol. This challenge will also pair up nicely with my quest to get to those tbr’s that are on my reading bucket list, and they are big tomes, so my climbing will be slow but steady, hopefully... can’t wait to start! :)

message 45: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (keslei) | 32 comments This will be my second year doing this challenge. I'm optimistic about summiting my chosen mountain for 2017, but I've added about twice as many books to my TBR pile in the past year as I've taken off, so I definitely need this challenge again. I'm determined to eventually get the TBR pile under control!

message 46: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 8 comments In looking through my records, this will be my 5th year participating in this challenge. I seem to make small dents but I would really like to see a large chunk of my own-to-read books get off of my shelves. I really do get distracted by library books...

I will say that I haven't bought as many books in 2017 as I have in the last few years (although I still have 6 weeks to go!) This might be a sign of the times :)
