Has anyone of you read Go Set a Watchman yet? It's been on my reading list for while now.

I'm going to give people the chance to get the book before I ask any questions. Two I will ask are...who's looking forward to reading this book? and what do you expect? :)

I haven’t read Go Set a Watchman for fear of ruining the original story, I’ve heard mixed things about it!

I finished a week or so ago, absolutely loved it.

I've owned the film for a while but have never watched it, thanks for reminding me that I should! Also think I'll read Go Set A Watchman soon, maybe early in the new year.

I think most of the major characters are considered mockingbirds at some point in the story.

The action in "Go Set a Watchman" contains some reminder of things that you will recognize from “To kill a mockingbird”, but we also get some stories from the time that were not included in the previous book. The main emphasis of the action is that Jean Louise(Scout) is an adult visiting the home city. It is an entertaining and educational novel that never became boring. It is well-written and engages me with it`s reflections on the interpersonal plan. But when Lee make Atticus a racist she actually commits a durable characterkill on the Atticus who we all became so happy about when we read "To kill a mockingbird ".
I think the book is a trivial, but unfinished political novel about the pain of social change.

I also really liked Lee's writing style - great dialogue and clear, beautiful details that really immerses the reader in 1930s Alabama.

That's so disappointing to hear!

I felt the same about Go Set a Watchman. When I first heard it was coming out I was very excited, but after I heard more about it and the controversy about Harper Lee not wanting it published. Which is why I think it's important for people who are going to read it or have to know that technically it's not canon. Atticus is still the great character he always was.

And it's not that I object to the death penalty for rape, what I object to is how extremely lax the whole evidence procedure was.

Even more reason it could not be brought up under oath.
Also, I think, Boo Radley, has a mentally of a child. He is a grown man, but the mind of a child and that’s why he is hidden from society. Maycomb seems to point fingers and things they don’t know about (or are scared about) and hiding him is one less reason for him to die or to be blamed for something he didn’t do.
My sister brought up the idea (or the idea of many who have read the book) that Boo Radley was a Pedophile. I do not believe this at all. I think he has autism or just a low IQ.

Infantilizing disabled people is dangerous. It's what puts them at such high risk for abuse. Just because they don't express themselves in a way you expect an adult to, that doesn't mean they think like a child.

I'm going to just add to this thread, instead of creating a new one. So if you're one who doesn't like spoilers...don't read above this post!
Who's read? Who will read? Who's never read?
This is personally one of my favorite books so I can't wait to discuss it all!!

I think the first time I read this book I was really confused when they jump from Scout's account of Boo Radley to the trial. I couldn't figure out what they had to do with each other and honestly thought I was reading two separate books.
Anyone else experience this?

I loved this book when I was younger. I read it again as an adult, and while it was great, I don’t know why I loved it so much as a kid when I didn’t understand it.
My husband and I listened to “go set a watchman” together. I didnt like it as much. It was OK. But, just lacking something.

I had the same experience, Holly. I was reading like "why???? whats happening????"

I’m a bit lost on the dates..."
Technically people chime in with discussion once they have finished the book. Sometimes people have already read the book and will comment such and wait until someone else opens up the discussion so they don't give out spoilers. I assume anyone who has come back to the discussion has finished the book and will discuss accordingly.
But, as far as I know there is not a specific date no. Sometimes I don't get the book read in that month (I'm sure other's don't have this problem HA HA HA!) and will come back to add to the discussion. So, discussions are kind of ongoing with people coming into the challenge all the time. I hope that helps?

On a semi-related note has anyone read 'Beautiful Creatures'? It has a Boo Radley Character. And it's a movie now as well. Although, I didn't think the movie was as good as the book (I hardly ever do anyways.)

I agree. I really wish there was a sequel about Boo.
this was a book that I had to grow into. I was forced to read it in junior high and hated it. like barely read 3 chapters. I passed the test just from class discussions. I picked it back up in college and now its one of my favorites. guess I had to just grow into it.
