SOLVED. Early 2000s/late 90s children or YA book taking place in Australia about road kill, very dark book. [s]

I read this book AGES ago and can't for the life remember the title. I do know it's not recent, but not ultra old either. The book was very thin (possibly barely more than a hundred pages) and the cover was a sort of radioactive green.
I'm almost positive it took place in Australia. The main character was a boy, and I think he was hit by a car or something. Either way, he was injured and left in a ditch by or on the road and couldn't get help. There were monsters or animals about and the theme was something about the road kill. There was a weird tone of magic/worship/mysticism aimed at the road/roadkill and it was a very dark, weird book. Fairly sure it mostly took place at night. The animals (or monsters?) were trying to take the dying boy somehow? It was a horror book.
