Thanks.

I really wish I knew what to do to fix this keypad.

Lindsay (kiwi365) | 3672 comments Evening all,

Pretty certain they are fleas. We have treated the house and seem to have gotten rid of them, it is just outside and they seem centred in the bark around the sandpit. I am going to try the boiling water option tonight and see what happens.

In other news it appears Dexter now has Hand, Foot & Mouth. It s apparently doing the rounds at his nursery. Brilliant!

Hope you are all doing ok?

You haven't even seen me waving my fingers, Smithers. I mean Patti.

I do not miss the days of such. Did you inquire carefully how he acquired it, and how to avoid the next public health menace?

Is the cure onerous? Do you have to do it - and keep YOUR child out of school until certified not unclean?

Some child she played with at a campground gave my daughter the only case of head lice any of my kids ever had (one of the benefits of homeschooling IS lower exposure); it wasn't any fun, and the other girl's mother was mortified... as she handed me the chemical spray and the special comb!

message 6609: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (kiwi365) | 3672 comments Unfortunately there is no cure for HFM, it just has to run it's course. And it is almost impossible to stop kids from getting it as it is spread via coughing, sneezing and saliva and unfortunately most 1 and 2 year olds are not known for their excessive hygiene habits.

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Lovely to hear you friend is back to her old self, Patti and hope Dave's dad recovers well.

I've been in a "stonking" mood - in that I remembered the word and have been using it in FB and Instagram posts. You know, "Stonking idea" "That's a stonking book haul " etc etc. Only I have just realised, curse my bespectacled eyes and fat fingers, that I typed "stinking" instead. Every single time . . .

And if there's one of them around, the whole bunch can get reinfected. Eek!

Sorry you have to deal with this.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ah, poor Dex. Hopefully it'll be a mild case. It usually clears quite quickly and fighting it will strengthen his immune system.
Silver linings, n all.

Dave got home last night. His father is doing well but will be in hospital for several days. He'll go again when he's released.

message 6615: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Lindsay, I just did a quick google about your flea problem.
You might want to consider getting rid of the bark and replace it with cedar chips.
My big brother and sisnlaw always lay cedar chips in their dog run. Mind you, they live in a cedar wood and have plenty of free material to use.
The article I looked at also said rosemary repels fleas, so you might want to invite her for a visit. :D

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12600 comments Morning alk, had an interesting night last night. Going for afternoon tea after work, then hopefully getting a new microwave and food shopping on the way home.

Hope Dex gets better soon Lindsay. That's quite funny Kelly. Glad Dave's dad is doing well.

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning all. Got back late from London last night and still recovering.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Lindsay you’ve made me itch. Poor Dexter, my grandson has had cold after cold this winter but touch wood nothing worse (yet).
I’ve had dogs for years but never had fleas.
It’s last day of term at school. So I’ve got to think of 7 weeks of entertainment for a 3 year old.

I thought about it too.
I had to stop thinking about it when I got to around 30 essential books.

I could maybe do a 365 day book a day challenge.

message 6621: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning!

How funny, our kids have been out for 3 weeks.

Nathan had HFM last October, it's rotten. Take care around Dexter's groin too that's a prime site for blisters. If it comes to it, give him a wet cloth to suck on to keep him hydrated, if he will suck on it... Take care in the heat and don't hesitate to take him to the Dr if he isn't taking in fluids! Their wee mouths can be too sore to eat and drink. We were lucky that Nathan was still breastfeeding.

Glad to hear Dave's Dad is doing well.

Yes cutting down to 10 goes beyond discipline, it demands eccentricity :-)

message 6623: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! Cedar was traditionally used to line clothing chests - repels moths too. Mind you, I think it'd be hugely expensive to use here in those quantitites.

Just off to the PO to post Granddaught #2's birthday present. Lovely day for a little walk.

xxx

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12600 comments One of the neighbours knocked on the door last night offering to pull up some of the weeds and take them to the tip – Lucy obviously likes sleeping in the garden though, so I tried to say no, but relented and let him do the half she doesn’t use, and he even took my microwave for me! 2 less jobs this weekend, and why I love living on my street! Fire stick unexpectedly arrived today, probably won’t get chance to set it up till tomorrow. Microwave reserved, ready to pick up after afternoon tea.

Post away!

Also, I'm jealous. One day my life will allow for pets again.

message 6628: by Rosen (new)

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments Here they are in all their glory:

Dread Pirate Bigglesworth and Buttercup.

They are lovely kittens, having grown up on the foot of a child's bed (the family tried to move them, but mummy cat kept returning them). The short-haired one is a boy. He's affectionate but a little wary around strangers - definitely starting to try and stomp out his independence. The long-haired one is the girl. She's a little naughty (walks in poo!) but very cuddly. She goes floppy when held. Both are fairly permanent fixtures on my desk, either sat by the window watching the world go by, or fast asleep on my lap/in tray/whatever tiny gap they've found today.

I should probably credit LLE Photography, as Claire has done an excellent job, as usual.

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments Quite! Usually, I have a strong aversion to strings of the same character and repeated punctuation, but these guys are regularly making me go Aaaaaawwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (They also sometimes type similar strings, as my keyboard is a popular spot for paws.)

message 6631: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Aren't they sweet. So, are they better or worse behaved than the imaginary variety? 😋

message 6632: by Rosen (new)

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments They are better, I think. I remembered cats being much harder to socialise, but last time I had kittens I was out by day. This time there's two of us home all of the time so they're never more than a few feet from a human.

Thanks Jud, at the moment Dex is still eating and drinking fine. But i will keep an eye on it. His poor wee bum is covered in blisters, i feel so bad for him.

message 6635: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (kiwi365) | 3672 comments Thanks everyone.

We have poured boiling water on the sandpit and bark and i have ordered some diatomaceous earth which is also supposed to be very good (and natural) at getting rid of fleas.

I itch constantly at the moment, even though they are not on me i feel like they are!!!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good morning Lindsay and everyone.

How's Dexter today?

Everything is looking scrubbed after last nights rain. Not that it was manky as it would get in Baku.

Food shopping today. Ugh.

Dave is hankering for a chick pea stew of some sort, as we've got the slow cooker here now. Not sure if the weather suits that sort of dish but I'll humour him, I suppose.

message 6643: by Jim (new)

I'm hoping we'll get more rain today

message 6644: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I think it's meant to get hot here again. Which is completely fine by me.

I've now got a fan in every room, since the shipping came.

Did I mention I had Alla iron all of our clothes and I carefully placed them in the boxes?

Yeah, that didn't work.

message 6649: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning everyone. Another sunny day ahead, from the look of it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12600 comments Well, yesterday ended up being an expensive day! Had a lovely afternoon tea though, and came back with leftovers. When I went to collect my microwave they had a sale on, so I came home with a new sheet and pillowcases for £11.25 that should have cost £30! Managed to squeeze the food shopping in too. Think I might be coming down with a stye, got a painful bit just under my right eyelid. Its our yearly rushbearing festival this weekend, the rescue Lucy is from fundraise there, so I always go round for an hour and help them out, got a couple of errands to do beforehand, and then need to do a home visit in Huddersfield this afternoon, which requires going to the petrol station first. Cloudy and overcast, so lovely and cool. Pizza for tea.

Aww, how sweet Rosen, so glad you have joined the cat owning ranks. That's the name of the stuff I couldn't remember Lindsay! Hope it works. Not sure cats and chickens is a good match Kath. Yes, I was hoping the lack of rain would kill the weeds I've been trying to kill for years, but they have grown!
