Quantum (quantumkatana) How fast is your connection? Are you thinking of using mobile broadband?
The total budget sits at A$49bn (£29bn; $38bn). Of that budget, around 35% must be spent connecting the final 10% of users, including wiring to remote areas, erecting many of the required 2,600 wireless towers and, most expensively, putting two satellites in the sky.
...
And while it promotes itself as part of go-ahead Asia, Australia sits only eighth in the region, behind neighbours such as Thailand (21st overall) and New Zealand (27th).
...
He [NBN chief executive Bill Morrow] also noted increasing competition from mobile broadband technology.

Graeme Rodaughan I started my career working in Telecommunications for Ericsson and then (Open Telecommunications) aka Seimens (it's a long story...) and from it's conception the NBN was ill-conceived.

IMHO - the future is wireless - not reliant on fixed end point cables. 5th generation wireless technology will eat the NBN for breakfast. REF: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5G

The NBN is a classic government inspired white elephant that was obsolete before it got off the drawing board.

I lament the funds being poured into this POS. Noting that it is being done 'off budget,' and not accounted for correctly which is typical of the shonkiness of the whole effing thing.

Australians will be paying for this effing white elephant for some time to come.

Rita Chapman | 156 comments I already have mobile broadband but I'm not very happy with it. However, if I can stay with it - maybe the devil you know......

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1579 comments Have just switched to the NBN. While so far the speeds are better than our ADSL, they're still not amazing, in comparison to what I'd guess would be considered 'good' speeds elsewhere.

Of course, we're only FTTN here, so our connection is by existing copper. The whole thing was disintegrated by a variety of governments, sadly.

Graeme Rodaughan Leonie, - Tyranny of Distance. Replacing the copper is hugely expensive. And the technology is moving on...

Yes, living in rural NSW currently, and previously from remote WA, the tyranny of distance is a very familiar thing.
