Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Excellent choice! I listened to this one month's ago and hated to turn it off when I had to. His vampire books are great.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11974 comments Mod

John | 92 comments I just finished reading this book last month. I wish I hadn't so I could read it all over again (for the first time). Really enjoyable!

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) Starting it today.

Kelly B (kellybey) | 630 comments I'll be starting this one in about a week :-).

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments I got and started this one a bit early, maybe a third of the way into it now. Enjoying ths sparser prose, versus the lava flow of similes and metaphors I’ve found myself wading through on occasion.

Only quibble I have (and it’s just that, a quibble) is that it took me a bit in the beginning to figure out what time period we were in. But then, that might have been intentional on the author’s part, for reasons known only to the gentleman himself, so I shan’t judge him harshly for that, lessen I hear otherwise.

Marie Helene | 741 comments Walter wrote

I had the same 'quibble' and did some research. The year is 1935. Franck is 36 and his wife Dora is 24.

message 17: by Lena (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lena | 2673 comments I liked Dora’s “two daddy eyes.” I’ve never met anyone like that, it was a good character feature.

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments Finished it last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The Great Depression era atmosphere gave the story considerable added dimension.

This is a terrific story. I loved the foreshadowing vibe of the Pig Chase. The ending is perfect.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11974 comments Mod
Oh! I can't wait to read it.

Kelly B (kellybey) | 630 comments I just started it this afternoon, and I love it so far! The time period and location really set the mood.

This is the first time I've read anything by this author. I need to search out what else he has written.

Kelly B (kellybey) | 630 comments Finished :-). I loved it.

What do you think was (view spoiler).

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) | 7707 comments Mod
I finally started it today! (aside from the prologue that I read last weeK). Enjoying the prose.

Hey Chris--I just started this one, too, so I'll join you fro doughnuts!

Chris (chrismccaffrey) | 599 comments I am going to listen to it which may give me a different perspective on the book.

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments Chris wrote: "I am going to listen to it which may give me a different perspective on the book."

Given that the story is told in the first person, and how well crafted a tale it is, I’m guessing it will make excellent listening as an audiobook.

Katy Mann | 988 comments Yeah, this was a great one. Hadn't read enough about it to have expectations, so I was surprised.

And the ending was great.

Lena | 2673 comments It needs a sequel.

Marie Helene | 741 comments Lena wrote: "It needs a sequel."

And a prequel too, about Martin Cranmer the taxidermist.

Glad to heart it. I have that one.

message 45: by Char (new) - rated it 4 stars

Char | 17459 comments The Lesser Dead is also narrated by the author and it’s KILLER on audio. It’s my favorite Buehlman, but I’ve enjoyed them all. 🙂

I have the h/c--looking forward to it after THOSE ACROSS THE RIVER. :)

Chris (chrismccaffrey) | 599 comments Really enjoying this. So much that i added all of his other books to my Kindle wish list. Thinking now from what you guys are saying that I should get the audio books instead.

On the topic of this book--I am loving the between the wars time frame of this book.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) I am going to read and/or get the audible books as well!

The beginning captured my attention, but I found the pacing too slow during the next 2/3 or so . . . (view spoiler)

I agree. This was an interesting one. I agree the pacing was a bit odd but to me that added to the unexpected turns and feel of the story.
