O.M.G!!!!!!! I LOVE this narrator. This book is great so far. I just want to hug it... I guess I could hug my iPod lol. I love the swine herd tradition. And the ghost stories!!

but i really liked the book.
excited to read your updates Latasha and Pixelina.
i got to listen to 50% of this today at work. the narrator, mark bramhall, is freaking phenomenal. I like the characters because i know all of them. I'm not from Georgia but north east Tennessee. The superstition surrounding the woods? Love it! I'm superstitious myself. YES! i would keep the tradition of sending the pigs out because I'm very traditional and if my ancestors did it, i will do it too. (view spoiler) but so far I'm having a great time with this book and at the moment, it's a 5 star. I'm up to the point where Frank and Dora are married and getting ready to leave. i don't think that spoils anything BUT (view spoiler)
I know I'm gushing but I don't like the racism and what it leads to. Thank goodness he doesn't drag it out, making those parts longer than needs to be.

I really enjoyed this. In fact, it made my 2017 favorite list. I understand several of us thought the pacing slowed down the story a bit; but for me, I enjoyed the further development of the characters and the townsfolks.
I also enjoyed (and I don't think this is a spoiler, really) the fact that once you thought the book was ending, it veered off and ramped up another story. The ending was excellent too, I thought.
I would also recommend the audio version although it has a weird little defect where the last word of some sections is cut off in random places. It happens frequently.
Anyone who has read other works by this author----what book would you recommend for me next?

All of them! (I started with Those Across the River and then I read them all.) However, my absolute favorite is The Lesser Dead. The author narrates it himself and I wager that no one could guess how this book ends. Buehlman is an excellent, excellent narrator which only adds to the experience. Heehee, the end was so damn good, I rewound it, (so to speak) and listened to it a second time!
I think my second favorite is The Suicide Motor Club.

All other things being equal, I favor reading in order of publication. Yes, some series may not be written in chronological order (I’m thinking of The Magician’s Nephew in the Narnia series), but publication is the order they were read in originally. For one thing, the author might reveal certain things in later books that could act as spoilers for earlier books if read in an order other than publication.
Me & Nancy are going to buddy read the suicide motor club in January if anyone wants to join us.

Tempting. Should I listen to The Lesser Dead first, though?

My answer to that question will always be YES!!
(I freaking LOVED that audio and I want to push it on everyone!)

I am looking forward to reading the next book by this author. For a "debut" book, it was encouraging!
