SOLVED. garland branch, magic specific to the female mc [s]

Can not remember title or author..book started with young woman gettng a branch from a garland tree. The branch became her wand for channeling magic. The branch was specific for her and others coould not see it. Another character was "the great wizard". She was joined by an older couple on her journey to seek help from this wizard.
