The main character isn't as bad ass nor is there a Curran, so set your expectations a bit lower. There's only 1 Kate Daniels. ;-)

I just saw that you've marked the Hollows and the October Daye series as TBR. Now those are two of my favorite UF series! To fair to Kate Daniels and the Fever series, I started those near the tail end of my affair with UF. I was burning out on the genre by that point.

I normally don't read urban fantasy, so I am still fresh. I completely understand the burn out feeling. I had it for a while with ya. :)

I loved Hollows also by the time I got a few books into it. That probably would've been my 4th pick, Miche. :)

I've been in a slump since December... I just can't sit and read right now. I actually get anxious. Having 2 kids to look after instead of one under 2 has taken up a lot of my time. That and my other household duties... By the time I can sit to relax, the clock says 11pm and then it's sleepy time lol.

Nevermind, I was a little distracted too and I'm still in the middle of the first chapter. I guess it won't be too hard to catch up ;)
If you like to, we could use the September-Thread to discuss it.

Or just send me messages, that way your thoughts won't get lost in the mix. I'll probably start it on Wednesday, I'm pretty swamped over the next two days. But if I find some time, I'll let you know.

Title: The Daylight War
Author: Peter V. Brett
Pages: 639
BR: Y
Challenge: Y

I just went through it so quickly I was absolutely impressed by the speed. It helped I was caged in a plane and I did not have any interest in watching a movie...

Virginie, it was our first time reading them, so we were in a hurry to know what happens. It is easier to slow down and savour a book on a reread. :)

It was my least favorite, tied with TtH, the first time through. It rereads much better. I'd put it on par with GotM the second time through.

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5397 comments I feel left out. I should start posting my books again. Maybe someone will give me recs based on my reading preferences :-)

So the books I've finished so far in August:
Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels #3)
Drive (The Expanse, #0.1)
Magic Mourns (Kate Daniels #3.5)
Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels #4)
Curran POV (Kate Daniels)
Magic Dreams (Kate Daniels #4.5)
Naamah's Curse (Naamah Trilogy #2, Kushiel #8) (this was actually a dnf at 50%)
Ravensong (Green Creek, #2) (finishing tonight)

There's going to be a lot of Kate Daniels this month ;-)

Get ready for a lot of Karsa Orlong. HoC is definitely a transition book in the series but on reread it sets up a lot of brilliant bread crumbs which keep coming all the way to the last book.

Petrik wrote: "Urgh that's not too assuring. Especially because I'm enjoying MoI immensely right now xD "

It's still a good book, Petrik, it just doesn't have the same level of emotional impact as DH and MoI did, at least it didn't for me. I should probably be happy that I didn't get my heart ripped out of my chest again, lol. But I think Scott's description of it as a transition book is pretty accurate.

Scott wrote: "It was my least favorite, tied with TtH, the first time through. It rereads much better. I'd put it on par with GotM the second time through."

I expect that I'll probably appreciate it more on reread. I'm considering rereading the series when the next BR rolls around. We'll see if I can manage it timewise.

I loved the first two books from The Expanse, but this one was painful to read. Bland story and characters. I want Avasarala in all books!

Lol honestly you could almost skip to book 5 and then come back later. I'm pretty sure book 4 is going to be relevant down the road, but when I first read it, it felt a bit out of left field.

It's so much fun for me to see you meet KD and Avasarala and have the same reactions I did. It makes me want to kick my ass into further gear and finally commit time to the books you've been raving about lately. (Doing it)

My husband is on book 5 now. After I bitched to him about how horrible book 3 was he kept telling me to stick to it cuz book 5 was great again. I just have to get past book 4 to get there.

message 3745: by Diana Stormblessed (new)

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5397 comments I'm just very character driven in my book likes and I couldn't connect with any of the new characters. I still loved all the Holden chapters but I didn't love any of the ones with the new POVs. That's a risk when constantly introducing new characters like this author does. Like Miche said, I'm waiting for more Avasarala and more Bobbie.

... what characters were new? Hahaha I guess that says something that I can't remember it very well. Doh. (view spoiler)

I tend to give higher ratings for awesome character-driven books, but I often seem quite happy with just okay characters as long as all of the other elements are strong. (Although this is shifting lately as my preferences are changing).
