Elyse, You with your focus on SK and some others inspired me to throw in a few seasonal haunting tales ;). I’m counting The Bloody Chamber as one of them ;).

Good to hear! I’ve read the first story or two in The Bloody Chamber, and they were so good, I’ve been saving it. October Dewey’s seems like good timing to pull it off the shelf at last. I’ve only read one Neil Gaiman (I know, I know) so looking forward to this one.

Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments Glad to see you're here and all ready to go, Susan! The two graphic novels in my stack (Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story) and Good Talk: A Memoir in Conversations are both recommendations from you, so thank you!

Hope you enjoy them, Ann. Good Talk is one of my favorite reads this year, and Quiet Girl in a Noisy World was spot on, I thought. Getting excited to see folks gearing up for the read-a-thon; can it really be just a week away?

Susan | 986 comments Opening Survey!

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Maryland on the East Coast USA

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
Tough call — maybe The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter with her brilliant retellings of Grimm folk tales

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
Another tough call! Maybe the mango and sticky rice spring rolls from Trader Joe’s

4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I’m retired, very excited it’s time for another Readathon, and my reading buddy today is a black, white and tan pooch named Jaxie who is currently taking a post-prandial snooze

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? I’m going to participate in some of the reading sprints - they are such a great energy boost.

I loved The Bloody Chamber!! I love dark fairy tale retellings! I would like to remember to participate in the reading sprints! lol

I'm so sorry about that, dear :(

And Susan! I hope you are having an amazing time during Dewey's :)

If you do get to read Balazac and the Little Chinese Seamtress, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. A decidedly good coming-of-age book during a Communitist regime.

message 162: by Emma (new)

Emma | 168 comments I have never read a graphic novel, but Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story looks really interesting. I have added it to my 'to read one day' list.

message 163: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now? A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman, a graphic novel
2. How many books have you read so far? Finished Nimona by Noelle Stevenson and taking a break from The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie and The Conception of Terror: Tales Inspired by M R. James audiobook
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. Note: It is becoming a tradition that whatever book I list here does not get read during the Readathon.
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? A week with very little sleep caught up with me and I ended up retreating to bed with an audiobook and falling asleep. Even after a nap, I’m still lagging so I’m just going to be happy with whatever reading I get done.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I don’t have a row of Bingo yet.

How sweet, Kelly! I love the name you’ve picked. Wishing you many good times with your little pooch. Will he be participating in the next Readathon?

message 168: by Cora (new)

Cora (corareading) | 128 comments Hi Susan. Looks we have a lot in common. We are both from Maryland and we both read Nimona today! Max and I just wanted to stop by and say hi and cheer you on for the second half of the event.

Thanks for the tip, Cynda. I hope to get to it one of these days because it looks interesting. So many books, so little time

message 174: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments Closing Survey!

How would you assess your reading overall?

I’ve read more hours at past Readathons,, but I’m happy with what got read this time:
—Nimona, Noelle Stevenson (completed)
—A Study in Emerald, Neil Gaiman (completed — this was great late night reading)
—The Seven Dial Mystery, Agatha Christie (completed)
—French Rhapsody, Antoine Laurain (about 1/4 read)
—The Bloody Chamber And Other Stories, Angela Carter (one story read)
—The Conception of Terror: Tales Inspired by M. R. James (audiobook)—(listened to 40 minutes)

And I am two squares (reading in costume, stretch break) away from a BINGO blackout, so three ROWS bingo-ed.

Did you have a stategy, and if so, did you stick to it?

I did have a plan, but I took a nap instead ;)

One thing I did differently this time was check out my library e-books (Nimona, A Study in Emerald, French Rhapsody and a couple poetry books I didn’t get to) a week early. They have been tantalizing me ever since.

What was your favorite snack?

Have to go with the chocolate-covered pretzels.

Wanna volunteer for our next event?

Maybe. Will have to see what’s happening in April

message 175: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments And my plan for the morning is to continue in readathon mode — I have books! I have snacks! It is a grey and rainy morning! — after a stroll dodging raindrops with the pooch

message 176: by Ann A (new)

Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments I like the way you think (continuing in Readathon mode)! I had planned to return for the last hour, but needed the snoozing more, so I figure I'm justified in finishing out the weekend in RAT mode and getting to other stuff tomorrow. Hee hee.

By-the-way, I showed my husband the page from Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story that depicts "perfect date night" as her reading while the hubby is on his computer. That's totally us!
