I’ve heard such good things about Lost Children Archive! It was one of the books picked for this year’s Camp Tournament of Books, and the great comments there inspired me to go out and get my own copy. It sounds so timely.

Elyse, I like how you have a focus for your Readathons. ARCs seems wide open, too, since they could be on different topics. Look forward to seeing what you read!

Last year's RR my theme was graphic novels and poetry and I really wanted to continue that, I have so many unread graphic novels, but I have so many more ARCs I really need to catch up on. lol

Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments Hi Susan! Glad to see you back for this event! Book Love is in my stack, thanks to your recommendation from last time. I think it will be a fun, easy read for when I get a bit sleepy.

ARC stands for Advanced Reader Copy, so books that haven't been published yet. I get them from websites like NetGalley, Edelweiss, and BookishFirst.

Good luck. Dewey’s is perfect for catch ups!

Hi Ann A, Nice to hear you’ll be readathoning again. I hope you enjoy Book Love and its bookish humor. I’ve actually got another of Debbie Tung’s books, Quiet Girl in a Noisy World, out of the library for this Readathon — it’s similar to Book Love but about introverts ;). I’m impatient to read it!

Yes it is! I'm also behind on my GR Challenge for the first time this year so Dewey's is perfect timing.

Susan | 986 comments Went to Trader Joe’s yesterday to get some reverse Readathon treats and found a few:
—hummus, crackers, and veggies (carrots, pea pods and grape tomatoes)
—lemon biscotti
—mango and cream frozen bars
—canned ice coffee —something new to try out when I need a boost ;). Also lots of tea in the cabinet.

And there’s even a “bully stick” for new pooch, Jaxie, who loves her chews.

So....TBR, treats, Bingo List, Readathon diary format, internet access — check, check, check, check, check — ready to go! ;)

Woohoo! Now it's time to...WAIT. Agh. The worse part of the reverse, for me at least, is the waiting to start! lol. Those mango and cream frozen bars sound so good!! No TJs near me. :( I bought Starbucks 10x caffeine K-Cups...lol! Drinking some right now!

message 113: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments Yes, the waiting is tough! So I’m going to go busy myself with other things to take my mind off that tempting stack ;). I definitely recommend those mango and cream bars if you ever get the chance to try them. 10X caffeine! Whoa — you will be good to sail through those ARCs tonight! Are you planning an all-nighter?

message 114: by Dannii (new)

Dannii Elle (danniiellereads) | 350 comments Loving how prepared you are! Best of luck :) Your treats sound divine and I love how the pup gets to participate in the snacking too.

I've got a bunch of errands to run today but once 5pm hits I'll be twiddling my thumbs. lol. The plan is always an all-nighter but I've never been successful! Not even in my teenage years, I just love my sleep too much. But I did sleep in late this morning and have those K-Cups so we'll see!

message 116: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis | 510 comments I think the 5pm (west coast USA) start time will help us Elyse!
I haven't done a reverse yet, but I think getting the night done first will help me.

I love Trader Joe's! And those mango/cream bars are yummy. Just right for a light, but sweet snack. Good luck! Can't wait to get started...

message 118: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments Me, too. Just took the new pooch for her evening walk, and now it’s time to read!

message 119: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments 1)What fine part of the world are you reading from today? And what time is it where you are?

Maryland on the East Coast USA, and it’s already 9 p.m., 1 hour into the Reverse Readathon.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? So many good books! Maybe The Plot Against America by Philip Roth, or maybe the graphic version of Don Quixote.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? My sister gave me two ripe peaches, and there’s some vanilla ice cream in the freezer to go with them ;)

4) Do you have a #reversereadathon plan of attack? Good question! I’m starting easily with a YA story, The Secret Countess, about a Russian Countess who becomes a housemaid in an English manor house. I’ll switch to something else when I need a change.

5) Are you doing the readathon solo or with others? Solo, although sweet pooch Jaxie is here to remind me when she needs something.

Kate, Jaxie came to live with me about a month ago and is still settling in. She is a rescue, part rat terrier and parts something else, with big floppy ears and the sweetest personality. When she wants attention, she comes and lies by my chair for patting and (her favorite) belly rubs. Thanks for asking! I just added her to my profile picture

message 128: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Aww she's lovely! Sounds like she has lovely manners.
My 1 year old spaniel either leaps on my lap so I can't ignore her or continually squeaks a ball until I take notice! - All squeaky toys have been confiscated today! lol

Kate | 646 comments She's leggy being a working cocker so its not terribly comfortable especially as she fidgets quite a bit! lol But she does have moments of quiet which are peaceful and we've learnt to make the most of them before she's up and at it again!

Susan | 986 comments Mid-Event Survey:

1. What are you reading right now? The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson. Also underway: Quiet Girl in a Noisy World and Cheerful Weather for the Wedding

2. How many books have you read so far? About 1/2 of The Secret Countess and about 1/2 of Quiet Girl. 1/2 hour of audio of Cheerful Weather for the Wedding

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? The Plot Against America

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? More than I expected and another one coming up that will take a couple hours. Just do the best I can to get back into the swing of reading. Reading sprints work well for that.

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? No covers with animals. Only one title with someone’s name. Yes, Bingo is on my mind ;)

message 135: by Ann A (new)

Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments I'll be curious to see how you like The Plot Against America. I've had it for years, but it's still unread.
Sending special hugs to your pooch (don't they make the BEST reading companions?)

Susan | 986 comments Closing Survey!

How would you assess your reading overall? I’m happy with the reading I accomplished: two books finished (Quiet Girl in a Noisy World by Debbie Tung and The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson),
and three books in progress (Robert Hayden Collected Poems,
Cheerful Weather for the Wedding by Julia Strachey (audiobook) and the totally delightful The President’s Hat by Antoine Laurain) for a total of 661 pages.

Did you have a stategy, and if so, did you stick to it? I’m not sure I had a reading strategy. If I did, it was to maximize Bingo points ;)

What was your favorite snack? Ripe peach with vanilla ice cream

Wanna volunteer for our next event? I had fun coming up with a discussion topic and seeing people’s very creative responses, so I’d definitely be up for doing that again.

Susan | 986 comments Having fun thinking about book possibilities for Dewey’s Readathon. Certainly won’t be able to read all these, but choices are good:

The Bloody Chamber And Other Stories, Angela Carter
French Rhapsody, Antoine Laurain (library)
Nimona, Noelle Stevenson (library)
A Study in Emerald, Neil Gaiman (library)
Maybe an Agatha Christie, The Man In the Brown Suit? The Secret of Chimneys? The Seven Dial Mystery?
Tartuffe, Moliere (play)
A Soul in Motion, Emily Uhlig
The Eagle of the Ninth, Rosemary Sutcliff

Audiobook possibilities:
The Conception of Terror: Tales Inspired by M. R. James
Carmilla, Sheridan LeFanu
A Mind of Her Own, Paula McLain
Parker: Selected Stories, Dorothy Parker

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments I second that! The Bloody Chamber and Nimona are both favourites of mine. Also, no October readathon without a Neil Gaiman!
