Ann A (readerann) | 867 comments Oh, I need to get back to the Mantel trilogy! I've only read the first one, but I liked it a lot.

It looks like you made the best of the time you had. See you next time!

How did you like the new cheese?
Hope to see you in July.

message 807: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments I’m a little early, but while looking for my copy of a misplaced book, I came up with a reading idea for the July Reverse Readathon.

The plan is to pick books that I’m calling “Wallflower Books,” that were bought with enthusiasm and, for one reason or another, I never read.

Possibilities

These are all books I bought before 2020, so they’ve been waiting awhile for their turn to come

*The Flute Player, D. M. Thomas (novel from 1979)
Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Katherine Boo (nonfiction from 2012)
Six Suspects, Vikas Swarup (mystery from 2008)
Storyteller, Leslie Marmo Silko (memoir/poetry from 2012)
Feeling at Home, Alexandra Stoddard (home decoration from 2013? 2014? 2015?)
*Station Eleven, Emily St John Mandel (novel 2014)
*Conclave, Robert Harris (novel 2016)
*Lilian Boxfish Takes a Walk, Kathleen Rooney (novel 2017)
*In the Company of Newfies, Rhoda Lerman (memoir/dog story 2019)
An Odyssey: A Father, A Son, and an Epic, Daniel Mendelsohn (memoir 2019?)
The Last Policeman, Ben H Winters (mystery/scifi 2017)
Patience, John Coates (novel 2018)

*Ebooks*
A Bird Out of the Snare, Dorothy Canfield Fisher (novel, 2009)
The Silver Swan, Benjamin Black (mystery, 2009)
Letters of a Woman Homesteader, Elinore Pruitt Stewart (nonfiction, 2011)

*Audiobooks*

News of the World by Paulette Jiles (novel, 2017) 6 hrs
Packing for Mars, Mary Roach (nonfiction, 2017) 10-1/2 hrs
*Jukebox Joyride, Jacob Stein (children’s, 2019) 3-1/2 hrs
*Olio Live, Tyehimba Jess (poetry, 2019) 1-1/4 hr
Sovereign, Jess Hirsch (children’s, 2019) 6 hrs

*Most likely to be picked

Susan long ago I read Letters of a Woman Homesteader. There other women going west memoirs. I have read a few. I find interesting that the western movies of mid-century seem to be men-centric when it was women engaging in the literary traditions of women, including journaling and letter writing that we get so much information from. . . a feather in my feminist cap :)

Enjoy!

Thanks, Cynda! It does look very interesting. I may end up reading some of these before hand ;).

I really liked Station Eleven! I happened to read it in February of 2020...and within weeks real life was starting to look an awful lot like the book. LOL

message 811: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla | 826 comments I second praise for Station Eleven! And if you like it, there are two more books from the same author, The Glass Hotel and Sea of Tranquility that form a loose trilogy

I’ve heard so many good things about Station Eleven that I’m not sure why I haven’t read it yet. Maybe the reverse readathon will be its time!

Same . And telll what baby books little-bit is begining to like at the next Readathon .

message 820: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments Yikes! After seeming so far off, now the reverse readathon’s almost here!

I’m just about ready. I updated my list of possibilities to add one recent mystery (The God of the Woods) and some poetry books, and I pulled all the books together in one place so they’re ready for reading. With the movie version coming out in the fall, Conclave by Robert Harris is on the top of my list.

message 821: by Susan (new)

Susan | 986 comments And my meal planning is done, too —

Breakfast:
Coffee
Toasted cinnamon raisin bagel
Banana

Lunch:
Chicken Caesar salad

Dinner:
Leftover beef stroganoff

Snacks:
Sea salt popcorn
Cucumber slices, green pepper
Coconut Outshine bar
Brownie bites [frozen in freezer]
Nixie Ginger-Lime seltzer
San Pellegrini Zero Peach and Clementine seltzer

Bully stick for Jaxie

Susan | 986 comments July 2024 Opening Survey

1) What part of the world are you reading from today? I’m in the mid-Atlantic region of the US, not far from Washington, D. C. Dusk is falling, and the mosquitoes are waiting for me to take the dog out. (Better they bite me than the pup, I guess)

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? Conclave by Robert Harris, because I’ve been seeing trailers for the upcoming movie ;)

3) Which snacks are you most looking forward to? Brownie bites (intensely chocolate!)

4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I’m retired, have way too many books, and a happy little dog named Jaxie will keep me company.

5) What are your goals for this readathon? To enjoy some reading and a snack or two.

Thanks! Conclave is about a conclave of cardinals to select a new pope or “The power of God, the ambition of men” as it says on the cover. The movie will have Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and others I’m too sleep-deprived to remember (lol)
