Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments Thanks! So cool. David, what's your email? I'll get you a Smashwords coupon or gift you via Amazon.

Molly | 11 comments I'd love to read it! I use a Kindle. My email is MOLLY@MOONLOVERS.COM if you need it.

I prefer the amazon gift so I can read it on all my devices and have my place synchronized.

message 5: by Aki (last edited Jul 06, 2014 10:38AM) (new)

Aki | 4 comments Sounds better than most of the books I've seen lately, so I'll give it a shot. Format wise, I can do kindle, nook, or iBooks
shintaomiko@gmail.com

message 6: by John (new)

John Hundley | 31 comments Hey, Fran. Sounds interesting. Can I get a copy? I read on Kindle, so Amazon gift or Smashwords coupon would be great. jhundley50@gmail.com

message 7: by Renee E (new)

Renee E My 'satiable curiosity forces me to ask, since I live — make that exist — in a small town in East Tennessee, what small town is it? Or, if it's fictional, about where is it?

message 8: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments Wow, so many responses! I'm on it.

Renee, the story is set in the fictional Summer Cove, but think Cade's Cove, which is near Sevierville.

Where in East Tennessee?

message 9: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments I think I have everyone down to John. Renee, PM me if you want a copy or let me know what format you want.

Thanks again for choosing my story for this month's BOTM!

message 10: by John (new)

John Hundley | 31 comments Got it, Fran. Looking forward to the read. Cade's Cove, huh? I was hiking around there last year. Beautiful country. I'm not that far away in Charlotte, NC.

message 11: by Molly (new)

Molly | 11 comments Thank you Fran, can't wait to read. Have a nice weekend, well what's left :-)

message 12: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments John, my dad grew up in a hollow not far from Cade's Cove between Sevierville and Gatlinburg. The trail I talk about Hannah running is an old logging trail I used to hike in the woods that were across from my grandparents' house.

I'm imagining the area as I read!

message 14: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments It's really beautiful up there. I call it "God's country"!

message 15: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Stevenson | 190 comments This book sounds awesome! I would be happy to read and review. I use Kindle and my email is: chettsgenie@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks :)

Hi Len,

This conversation is for the book of the month which is 'Finding my Escape' by Fran Veal. There are other places where you can promote your book within the group but it's not appropriate to promote it here. Being respectful of each other is what makes this group such a friendly place for authors and readers to hang out. Please bear this in mind when plugging your book within the group.

Just to be clear I was commenting on the book of the month, 'Finding my Escape', when I said I would be happy to read and review.

Thanks

message 17: by Len (new)

Len Robertson | 39 comments Actually, it seems to be me that plugging books at Goodreads doesn't accomplish very much. It helps if one is doing other things, but hardly anyone wants to review other writers' books.

Case in point: I asked what a person could do to market a book with a budget of $20,000. I got one response: a question mark.

Len

I would love to read this book. I could use the Kindle version.

message 20: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments I'm on it, Melanie!

message 21: by John (new)

John Hundley | 31 comments Finished it. Liked it a lot. Is it too early to discuss it? I don't want to give any spoilers. First question for Fran, though: What made you decide to use first person POV for Hannah's character and third person POV for the others. (I went ahead and got the sequel, and I see you continued the third person POV for background on her parents.)

message 22: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments Good question, John. I've read several YA books with two or three first person POV's and I've found, personally, it's hard to figure out who's doing the talking. I would flip back and forth to see who was the MC for the chapter, and it really took me out of the story.

I'd already used the third person POV for the killer in the first book, so I extended it a little for the second book to fill in some gaps and "show" rather than "tell" what was going on.

Thanks for getting the sequel!

message 23: by John (new)

John Hundley | 31 comments Yeah, I agree about switching back and forth among first person POV characters can be confusing, especially within a chapter. It's one of the reasons I prefer third person POV, with occasional first person thought-sharing.
I can't say your shift detracts in any way from the narrative, but it is an odd shift in tone for me. By the way, I liked the ending. It was one of the possible scenarios I'd anticipated, but not exactly what I expected. However, the shift in scope in the second book was totally unexpected! Did you have that background story in mind when you started writing the first one?

message 24: by Fran (last edited Jul 09, 2014 03:08PM) (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments John, I had an idea about Valeria in the first book and the characters of Michael and Haman, but the hook at the beginning of book 2 came after I'd finished book 1. I actually wrote 35,000 words of the second book and decided I hated it and was just regurgitating Finding My Escape, threw all but about 2,000 words away and started with the base idea I had about Michael and Haman and the "what ifs?" The Valerians were always associated with dreams in my mind, I just didn't know the exact connection until book 2.

I love plot twists, and I really love throwing people off after they think they have everything figured out. As long as I can keep the characters honest, I'll twist the heck out of a story and throw as many turns in as I can without making the reader dizzy. You should see how book 3 starts out!

message 25: by John (new)

John Hundley | 31 comments Well, way to go, Fran. It certainly "hooked" me. I'm about 20% into book 2, and I can't wait to learn more about Valeria and (okay, need to be careful about spoilers)...you know, the other stuff.

message 26: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments David, any time you want to talk about the second book, you can PM me. I'm glad you're hooked. Music to my ears.

message 27: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments You, too, John. PM me to talk about book 2.

message 28: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments Once again , trying to converse on GR from my phone has me looking like an idiot. Between messaging with David, and talking with John here, I can't keep my messages straight, and the phone app won't let me edit!!

John, I'm so thrilled you are hooked on book 2. PM me if you want to talk about it.

I understand. Will do.

message 30: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments John, I'm dying to talk about the second book. And the in-progress third!

I hope you liked FINDING MY WAY BACK.

Fran

message 31: by John (new)

John Hundley | 31 comments Fran, I'm only about 40% through the second book, having spent some much needed time on my own projects. I like the plot twist in Hannah and Matt's relationship. Won't talk any more about it here, though. I'll message you. As far as the third book, if you need beta readers, keep me in mind!

message 32: by Fran (new)

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments Will definitely do that. I AM looking for betas!

message 33: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Stevenson | 190 comments I finished and got the review up on goodreads and amazon. Great book, loved the twist at the end. I had to get the next one and will get to it soon as I need to know what happens next!

Fran Veal (franveal) | 20 comments Sharon, sorry I'm just responding! I've had some internet issues with Goodreads for the past couple of days, and for some reason, my phone didn't want to cooperate, either!

Thank you so much for the review! I'm working on book 3 at the moment, and I'm setting a release date of October 21.

message 35: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Stevenson | 190 comments No problem, Fran! Read the second one and really liked it too, can't wait for the third :)
